Not to make any predictions or anything, but based on the beta testing I've done (admittedly all shareware) it's common practice to give testers a free copy of the game -- especially since we're all volunteers, of course.

For all commercial software I have beta tested, the beta testers got one of the following:
- A unique Item or status symbol of some sort in the game - An offer for a lifetime membership (not overly cheap) On a couple that have failed, I have gotten emails several months after release saying my account has been reactivated for a month. Needless to say those games failed for a reason and I felt no reason to torture myself just cuz it was free for 30 days. What I would like to see is if there is any sort of setup cost (either buying a boxed version or otherwise), then for beta testers to be able to get a reduced price on that. I would not expect a free account or free time. In fact I wouldn't expect anything, just be pleasantly suprised at whatever we do get. Besides the benefit we already have of first crack at the world. |

I did get an e-mail survey on what I would spring for as a beta tester going into release...which was basically a choice of picking a reduced-price subscription plan for a certain length of time (something like 1/2 price for the 1st six months), or being offered a lifetime membership available only to beta testers, for something like $150-175. (That's the one I'd probably spring for...bite the bullet once, and never have to worry about paying again...also, this would give LL the influx of cash they need to beef up the grid and stuff.)
I am also under the impression that there will be no "box set" to buy, it will be just like now, download and start immediate play (which makes perfect sense, as why should I have to go to the store and buy something like the TSO...that's retarded). In short, enjoy the free ride you're getting now, as it has to end sometime, as LL has to make $$ somehow (all companies do..lol), but I'm happy just to have the privilage of being a virtual pioneer... ![]() J _____________________

I second that one Josh
I have been into a monthly subscription game now for 2 years and it adds up. I would vote for the one time charge and just figure out if you thought you would be in the game long enough to break even, then all else is gravy. If they do offer a one time charge offer, I will take that one. Sturmie _____________________

lol .. one word comes to mind..."doink!"
The game IS going to be a free download. But you WILL have to pay per month.... so if you compare it to anyother game where you have to buy the cd at 80$... well lets say you ALL get the first 5 months free! _____________________

$80 per CD is standard - in Canada or Australia. And is actually in general cheaper than the US which is usually $50 per CD. I don't know the exact exchange rates, but I think $80AU is a little cheaper than $50 US.
Oh and arguably the best "Mech" game, which is for the XBOX, costs $200 retail. |

Personally, I'd love the opportunity for a "lifetime membership", i.e. pay $150 or something, and get free lifetime membership. Short of that, then if LL will charge for the client (a la Neocron), then a free copy of the client for us. My third choice would be a discounted membership, maybe give us the choice of three months free, six months at 50% off, or a year at 25% off... something like that. i dunno. this is my first beta testing, so i'm kinda new at this

ok first.. you will get NOTHING free. The bonus of being a tester is that all your stuff will be kept. So when SL will go live all you will have to do is input a credit card number and it will be just like an other SL night.. hopefully by then 1000 of ppl will be online.

If any linden-ers are listening: I would definitely spring for a lifetime membership. I can't pay monthly, because I'm not always at a computer, but if I knew that every time I came home Linden would be here? Ahh, heaven. (Yes, I'd pay $150 for it.)

dunno what I'd want/expect.....beta testing dragon realms & hercules/xena I got a unique item...and the knowledge that I'm still one of the oldest "living" people still ingame in the former.
For Asherons Call...I got an offer to buy the game and pay the monthly fee just like everyone else |

don't need nothing just being able to help with the creation of it and helping find the bugs is more then enough for me. =)
