We are attempting to organize a Second Life Sporting League (SLSL), and this is our cattle call for supporters. At the moment, we are putting together enough teams to run a single season of a single sport (BZ Waterpolo), but ultimatly we would like to have regular seasons for every sport in SL (including some new ones we are designing).
We have enough people involved to run our first season, but the more support we recieve, the better it will be. That said, here is a partial list of the resources we are attempting to obtain:
Players - Cant have a league without them. We have 2 full teams already and enough people to make up at least 2 more. We will be having our official "draft" Wednesday. February 9th. If you think you might want to play, stop by BZ beach (located in Lie) at 9pm any night between now and then, or contact me in-world.
Sponsors - Ideally we would like to have all our teams sponsored either by SL businesses, clubs, or individual residents. If you are one of these and wish to sponsor a team or just contribute prizes (or anything) please contact me in-world. Ad space will be available for sponsors, as well as radio spots. We would also like to invite... nay... to challenge any clubs out there to field and sponnsor a team of your staff and/or regular partons. ^_^
Video Specialists - We would like to "record" all our games and make them available for viewing to all of SL. If you have the know how and/or software to do this, again please contact me in-world.
Announcers - We would like our games to have live commentary. IF you have experience in this area (or even if you don't but think you can do it anyways) we want your help. Please stop by any regulary schedualed BZ waterpolo event so you can see what it is you will be announcing. Also, if you have a shoutcast server we could use for the announcers, it would be greatly appreciated (Otherwise we will be doing our announcments over teamspeak *see below*).
Voice Chat Moderators - We have a private teamspeak server that we will be making available to our players and our attendees. Voice chat is an excellent addition to SL, but we have discovered that it can be abused. To help prevent this we would like a few moderators to silence would-be "voice griefers". You dont even need to have a mic or to activly participate in conversations for this, just listen. We don't want to censor language, as this is a mature sim, and (hopefully) a mature crowd, but all the same, verbal abuse will not be tolerated.
PR People - Have a way with words and people? We need you to help spread the word, solicit sponsors, and just generally get the word out. We would like SLSL to be as big in-world as professional sports are IRL. To do this we need publicity.
Organizers - So far our "organization" is made up of dreamers, scripters, builders, and gamers. We love them all to death, but none of us are very "organized". If you have a desk that isn't covered in scrap paper and soda cans, WE NEED YOU to help us get our act together.
SL Sport Hosts - Have a Second Life sport that you would like to see be part of the SLSL. Contact me with information on it and we might just make it part of our regular sports lineup.
Land Owners - We have new sports coming out that will be playing in a "portable" areana. If you have land in a low lag sim, and would like to host events we would love to hear from you. Dwell for you, and a place to play for us... everybody wins.
Content Creators - We have lots of things that need to be made to get this off the ground. There are a few of us with a lot on our plate. The more builders and scripters we can get involved, the faster things will get going.
Spectators - Last but certainly not least, we need people to come watch events. What would sports be without cheering crowds? So when you start seeing the matches in the events list, be sure to come by and cheer on your favorite team. There will also be gambling available, run by our "bookie bot", so even if you don't want to/can't watch the matches live, you can still place your bets.
Anyone Else - If I've missed some area that you think you can contribute in, PLEASE get in contact with me and let me know. We need all the help we can get. ^_^
Ok so thats about it. Please post and let me know what you think and/or if you can contribute. This is going to be fun no matter how it turns out, but the more people who get involved the less its going to seem like "work" for each of us.
Thank you for your time.

In addition I'd like to point out that while we are asking for "volunteers", ultimatly most of these will be paid positions. Players WILL get paid to play, win or lose.

If your sports arena will occupy more than 10 persons at any given time, it will need to have a fire protection system installed. Furthermore it will need to be approved by a Fire Marshal. You can contact me for details. If found in violation of the Fire Marshals regulation, you might be visited frequently by the so called "w-hat" team for "payment of violation". However the SL Fire Marshal is in no way affiliated with the so called "w-hat" team

From: Bryan Cooper Thats not a question. Now you're just wasting my time. I have to wonder who's time it is being wasted here. lol Oh well, at least your reply gave me an almost legitimate reason to bump this thread one more time. ( i know, I promised, but i would have thought I'd get more than 2 real responses from this). By the way, to both fo you who DID respond, thank you so much for taking the time to get in touch. ^_^ Some additional notes: Anyone who want to be a pleyer can be. Do not think you are underqualified. This game takes about 5 mins to learn, and anyone who wants to be on a team, can bring thier frineds and form one, or you will be placed on one at the draft. All our games will be held around 8 or 9 pm 2 or 3 days a week. Time commitment is about an hour on any fay we have a game. The schedual will be posted well in advance and will be somewhat flexible with notice. Ultimatly we will have different events runnin g all the time, so if you cant get involved in waterpolo, one of the other sports might work for you depending on your schedual. I am setting aside a good chunk of L$ out of my own pocket to pay all our players (win or lose... more if you win) as well as our other staff. I'm not paying very much mind you, but as more sponsors get onboard, we will have more to give those who participate in any capacity. There will even be door prizes for spectators. ^_^ Ok, I have lots more to say on this subject, but I've been long winded enough. If anyone has any questions or comments I'll be happy to ramble on some more, but until then I guess I will shut up and just see how things go.

How much will it cost me to sponsor a team? And what kind of advertising will it boast?

From: PhilMcCavities Phoenix How much will it cost me to sponsor a team? And what kind of advertising will it boast? I already talked to you in-world, but I'll post the answer here anyways just to try and give some attention to this thread. ^_^ To fully sponsor a team will cost a measly L$1000, and with that you can slather your players' uniforms and/or innertubes with whatever logos or designs you want to put on them. If a team gets multiple sponsors, then each sponsor will get to place logos, sized according to percentage of the sponsorship fee you paid. Also, if you would like to help sponsor the league or even just specific league events, as opposed to sponosring a specific team, that is an option as well. Ad space at the events will be provided for these types of sponsors as well. There has been a fairly positive response so far (well, not in the forums, but in-world), and this all looks very promising. I would like to point out that none of the people involved in setting this up are looking to line thier own pockets. All the monies donated and/or paid for ad space are going towards paying players, SLSL staff members (myself excluded, since I am actaully paying for a majority of this out of my pocket), and providing nice prizes and L$ incentives for spectators.

This is another great idea. You are working on much of what Waves and I are working on - establishing some teams to compete on a reoccuring basis. We started with the Survivor concept and are well into our 4th event. Elle has come onboard with Plywood chef and I hear of new ideas like this beginning to sprout. All of us are undergoing many of the same needs - players, sponsors, etc to get this off the ground. As our schedule permits, we will support you as a sponsor and a spectator. BZ Water polo is one of our top sponsors and we would like to return the favor.

What I really want to do is put together a "sports commision", to coordinate league play for any and every sport in SL. The only requirments are that the sport be adaptable for team play (they can still feature one on one challenges of course), and that they have predefined rules that make them fair to all participants. So if you have specific "sports" in mind, please get in contact with me in-world or post here as i read the forums every day (except sunday and monday). I would have loved to have gotten involved with survivor, but it all occurs while I am at work. =( I have some ideas that I think you might find very cool to use for your next "season" of survivor and would love to talk them over with you. As for plywood chef, that is the coolest idea ever. I love Iron chef, and I love to build/script... what more could I ask... oh yeah, I could ask for PC events schedualed for after 7pm... lol Anyways, thanks for you interest. Hope to see you in-world tonight when I get home from hell...er, i mean work

Crosspost from the classifieds thread of the same name
01-29-2005 12:59
This was posted as a response to my thread in the classifieds section, but I think it has a better chance of getting seen here. From: Omaire Abattoir Nogard,
Thanks for posting this. I am here (as you know) to do whatever we need to do to get this going!
Those of you who own the ever popular clubs and stores... we know you're out there because we attend your events! Come on out and check out the activities. Sponsor a team and get advertised every time your team plays... how cool is that?
What about those of you who are just starting and feel kind of "buried" in the huge world of malls and such? This is a great way for you to get your name noticed!
And what about just having fun? Clubs, shopping, flying aimlessly... and scoring as many points as possible down at BZ... and soon to come, other places!
If you all have any questions at all about sponsorship, checking out the events, hanging out or even just comin down and having a ball competing... feel free to IM Nogard or myself and we'll be glad to explain things, show you around or chat.
Spread the word! We're coming to an event center near you!

Water Polo SL Sports Team Development
02-02-2005 13:49
Come on down to BZ Beach folks! Draft day is a week away so if you would like to play but don't want to start your own team or can't find sponsors... let us know. Get in the draft and a team will pick you! It's that easy! Please do not worry about skill level. This is about fun. Fun! and... FUN! Get some cash too, win OR lose... just for floating around in an innertube trying to knock the ball into the goal. Water Polo is played nightly at BZ Beach @ 9PM SL Time. If you have an interest but not sure it's for you, come on down. A great, friendly atmosphere, lots of water, logs, a shop and a ton of fun. IM Nogard, myself, Brock and Binnie Zander (owners), we'll be more than happy to TP you, teach you or do handstands and spit quarters! But really, league and draft are coming soon. Let us know if you have any questions at all, whether you're a player or a business owner wanting to sponsor a team or just curious about the activity iteslf Hey Nogard... question for you on this... Is there or are there classes or sessions teaching folks how to play Water Polo before they begin league competition? I am happy to teach anyone who wants to learn the game (really REALLY easy) but maybe we should set up a few instructional classes before draft day?

Thanks for the reminder! I really need to get out of the house and start playing soccer again this spring.
Oh, and if anyone still plays with my Tag Shrooms, give me an IM. I'm releasing it all-perms and would love any suggestions on things they ought to be able to do.

Actually, thats kind of what I see the regularly schedualed nightly (9 pm) games as being for, but an organized waterpolo skills workshop is an excellent idea. Ok, lets do that. I'll post something in the events listing soon.

Possibly. They really are more of a party game than a sport. Sorry about the thread hijacking. I'll send you one the next time I'm on the grid.

I wont be on for another 5 hours, so if you wanna drop one in my inventory I would love you forever ^_^ As for the hijack, doesnt bother me at all... its just another bump. I'm thinking maybe the reference to "Sports Fans" in the title caused ppl who hate RL sports to gloss over this thread. Any chance to get them to look at it again certainly can't hurt.

Kyrah...
I've never played jetball. I have an old uniform and have been to the arena a few times but nothing happening. We'd love to come see how it works. I'm on just about every night after 5PM SL Time. If you could IM me, we can come check it out!
6 Days to Water Polo draft day all! Sponsors, players, spectators who want to be players or sponsors, heh... come join the fun at BZ Beach and join the Waterpolo League!
Oh, Nogard...another question for ya...
What if someone wants to sponsor, but doesn't have a team? Will there be ad space for these folks as well?

O There are 2 option in this case. If they want to sponsor a team, but just don't have the players, that is what the draft is for. Show up at BZ Beach on Feb 9th at 9pm (or a little earlier perferably) and you will be able to draft a team that very night. The other option is to sponsor individual matches. In this case you will get audio spots and/or places to put up banners (i need to discuss this further with the location owner(s)), plus a listing as a sponsor in the events list. Sponsorship need not be in the form of L$ either. We would very much like to have items we can hand out as door prizes, winning incentives, consolation prizes, and whathaveyou.
