Someone posted a link to SL on the SWG betatest boards. I was disapointed with where SWG was headed and decided to give SL a look. I never looked back. This is the MMO* I always hoped for. No treadmill, no levels, no stats; infinite creativity.

Anything with play money (as I thought it was at the time, no debate, please) that you can earn and save I love the idea of.. I didn't play TSO but The Sims I went through a phase of making them all marry each other so they were stinking rich.. man did that get boring quickly.. a box with no instructions, hahahahaahahahhaa _____________________

I've played TSO for about two years and really got sucked into the whole life sim thing. Heh, an older guy like me (never you mind) actually finding it more fun and relaxing "playing house", socializing, running a business than slaying dragons or camping "uber gear xxx" all evening.
But as TSO stalled out, stagnated, and finally is just dead in the water with mostly dead cities, I kept hearing of this strange life sim that "was not to be talked about" called SL, that was full of sex, bondage, beastiality, devil worship and just a purely horrible, horrible game of decadence and sin with no redeeming qualities whatsoever...so of course I checked it out. I couldn't find all the massive non-stop sex or animal-sacrificing sex magic devil worshipping but chose to stay anyway, as SL is much more fun than what TSO had collapsed into. You can always tell us former TSO'ers in SL. We're the ones who still have to have a bathroom in our house... |

A friend pointed me to the Popular Mechanics (or something like that--maybe How 2.0), which was running a story on it. I had thought of something along these lines--a world where nothing was static, and I was hooked. If I want to play an RPG, I download one to my calculator, or I go mess around on a few video games for a while. But Second Life is the community...
The scripting really had me hooked; how you could program cool stuff. And the fact that few people knew how to do it, and they would pay you. _____________________

Exactly what she said, plus the fact that i've also tried almost any possible virtual world enviroment I could lay my hands on. SecondLife is one of my best findings thus far. ![]() Same. Been keeping up with Virtual Worlds ever since I saw an episode of this hacker show thats since been cancled where they met an informant in a cgi virtual world and the guy was talking as a dog. I thought "Hmm wonder if theres anything like that". And researched into them, found AW, kept up with other VWs, found There and SL and couldn't get into them untill I got a better computer, when I did I was set. Still keep track of other virtual worlds. I enjoy the whole experience of it. ![]() _____________________

I read a CNN article, and was intrigued by the name "Second Life".
I had no expectations, other than those contained in that name. My socks were knocked off, and I'm still trying to find them ![]() _____________________

i have always loved mmorpg. used to play a 2d version called tibia where you slay monsters to level up but it got too tiring as other players were all mostly teens and could only socialise via insults and name-calling.
then i heard about There which was supposedly 3D so decided to give it a try. liked the people in it but found that the graphics were a little too anime-ish. plus there were also not many options to do creative things like build or design clothes. on my first week there i bumped into Diamond Hope (who is now my SL sis), who was checking out There because SL was down for a few hours for maintenance. she and i clicked really well and she started telling me about SL and asked me to try it out. i did some research on SL, found out i could build and script and if i was good, i could even make enough to convert into real money (which hasn't happened yet lol). i was sold to the idea completely, so i registered, installed and logged in almost immediately after SL came back up. unlike a lot of other mmorpg, SL is actually very easy to play. i only needed to go round the orientation island once and was then teleported to diamond's yacht which became my first home. i've been hooked ever since. now, 2nd life has practically become my 1st life ![]() |

I saw a thread in the EQ2 forums back when I was excited that it might actually be fun... one post in this thread mentioned how SL had the most extensive character creation out of any game out there. I went and tried it, made my avatar in the first five minutes... and here I still am with hardly any changes
![]() So I guess EQ2 was worth something at least... _____________________

After breaking my haunted addiction to Final fantasy XI
In the late year of 2004 on a website called Deviant art I saw someone had posted a picture of Second life, being the lazy simpleton that I was I thought it was a hoax created in some 3D modeling program, Untill I had spied my eyes upon the URL of second life, Upon many a nights pondering if I should join, Then once I did finaly join, despite the lag and somewhat crooked avatar I had shaped for myself, O.o and I started to have fun....right after I stopped thinking everyone was a non player character. (Tooo many RPG's) then I slowly got to meet alot of great People, ![]() To list them all would be a fools quest, Thank you thank you, Dance midgets dance! _____________________

Hi music, as you know my story is the same as yours. Came from URU Live being shut down, though I'm no longer part of D'ni in SL. I stay in SL because of the friends I have made.

I have been playing mmorpgs for several years and was really bored with the obessive leveling of characters while killing monsters, looting, striving for the "uber" weapons and armor, along with everyone else who were self proclaimed experts on everything. I also was bored with having to work with content provided by the devs of these games and running a rat race to win whatever drippings they were offering.
Then one nite i was surfing for "Virtual Words" and came across the SL ad " Your world you imagination..." and decided to check it out. OMG! I was floored! The beautiful graphics, the seemingly endless landscapes and the way the trees moved! You could teleport from one location to another by clicking a button and not have to "run" your character hundreds of "clicks" just to find a portal somwhere near your destination, wasting precious online time just to get somewhere. Then I found out I could make things, add MY CONTENT,even clothes for my avatar and my love affair with SL began. Although it was sad to say goodbye to my friends in the monster-killing games, it just doesn't compare to what I can and have experienced in SL and the great friends I've made. Since they chose not to follow me here stating "oh no, that's too much like real life, and I don't want to get addicted..." I simply wish them a fond "adeu" while I enjoy my Second Life. |

I ran across a Second Life banner ad on Penny Arcade, and I was intrigued by the idea of a virtual world where residents could build anything they wanted to build. It sounded a lot like LambdaMOO, a text-based virtual world I frequented some years ago, only bigger and shinier and in three dimensions.
I haven't been disappointed; Second Life has far exceeded my expectations. Not only has SL provided me with a unique environment in which to combine my coding and artistic skills, I've met people in this world whom I count as true friends. I'm used to forming alliances with other players of MMORPGs, but while temporarily amusing and useful for accomplishing tasks in such games, I never formed the level of attachment I've formed with my friends in Second Life. It's great to find a community of artists, programmers, socialites, and hooligans, all jammed into the same virtual reality. SL is an experience so unique, it sometimes defies description, and it's truly something I can't find anywhere else. _____________________

Cristiano dragged me here kicking and screaming. I actually cursed at him and said "Not *another* f***ing game???".
hehe ![]() Needless to say, I signed up full time the first night in world. Onei's huge bong in Stanford was one of the main selling points. That and the fact that I saw avatars walking around nude and had "bits" showing. haha.. That just really clued me in to the freedom of expression that I was certain to find in this world. And since that day, I've not been disapointed. ![]() _____________________

Looking for something with less structure. Saw something while perusing Bloglines. No effort to try it out. Here, am I. _____________________

I was going to build something similar, went looking, and found this place.

Was with TSO since early Beta days. After I got my 'founder's' icon, I 'swore' I'd NEVER leave... hehehe. After skilling, eating, sleeping, playing pool, showering, spooking, etc for over two years, I began to listen to my friends who had been gone for weeks at-a-time playing SL. I listened, but the TSO strings, the fat 'simolean' account, my castle and the expensive pets kept me from making the tempting move. Finally, on day, I got tired of skilling for yet another point, decided to look up SL, signed up for the free trial period and a strange thing happened... I was hooked, REALLY and completely hooked, I couldn't remove myself from in front of the monitor...
So, when the sun came up the next day (after playing for about 28 hrs straight), I took my vacation; when my two weeks were up, I took my five days sick leave; then I went to work for 1/2 day and took my five personal days and after that I took some "I think I still have the flu" days off. Never looked back on TSO. Oh, and I still have my job... shhh don't tell my boss, he still thinks I caught some nasty bug while vacationing... you see, I've never missed a day since I've been working here. A few weeks later, I was going over my bank statement and there was the monthly TSO charge. "Oh, yeah!! I forgot TSO! D'oh" Cancelled my account and in one instant click, lost my castle, my expensive pets and almost 2 million simoleans... do I care? Not one bit! Am I still hooked on SL? Absolutely! Is SL my RL? No, but I have made friends who I would not trade for anything and who have become RL friends. Friends who know who I am: my likes, dislikes, tears and laughs... Just like the ones in RL, but, somehow? More honest. Do I plan on leaving SL? Hahahahah, I think I have more personal days coming soon... Wait, I think my throat is a bit scratchy, it has to be some contageous bug that will keep me at home for at least another day.... Yah, the bug is called "Second Life" tee-hee. |

Who got you to join SL?
A fellow Livejournal blogger posted about her getting a job as a dancer at an erotic club. I remarked how I always wanted to do that, in the form of cage dancing. When I made the comment, I really didn't grasp that she was talking about a game, and when she encouraged me to become just that, I didn't realize how much she was right. She pushed me to try it out though I had heard about SL through the Escapist magazine. What did they tell you SL was all about? She didn't really tell me much, her journal entries spoke for itself. I researched SL myself. The ability to build, buy, sell, and explore - all of it - enticed me. What got you to stay? People put "dance clubs" down, but the Akasha dance club got me to stay. Yes, I liked exploring, I liked seeing other builds, but when I walked into Akasha's everyone was so sociable. "Welcome to SL! Hi, how are you doing! You look great!" Everyone was so chatty, the music was so nice (I don't have a electo industrial / synth pop radio station!) that it made me want to go back and see people. Then... I started building. That's what got me to buy land, and become "Premium." I thought about what I wanted to "give back" and ... I believe I'm here to stay. But... it was those damnable clubs that made me fall in love, because of how open everyone was - and always is - every time I join a crowd. Fun fact: I dance in my living room right along with my avatar! ~ Zuntira Ganache _____________________
