Friends, BEHAVE or I will pull out an evil Torley from an alternate reality!
![]() On a general informational note, happy to hear you're enjoying it so much, Red. I am too. Today there was some slowness to respond with the Roam but not because of what Fran and Rathe did -- SL's own mailservers and whatnot have had some odd problems, and I'm getting some bizarre packetloss at the moment that doesn't show up when I do a "proper" traceroute, yet started manifesting around the same time as the mailserver borks so a connection isn't out of my mind. Maybe the patch in the morning will fix it, and stuff. ![]() _____________________

It looks like the Second Life servers had a bit of a hiccup tonight for about 20 minutes but everything is back up and run smoothly again. And yes, hopefully their patch tomorrow will make Second Life even more reliable and robust.

Are we talking about ROAM?
Yes. I've been helping to beta test it, and so far, I find ROAM to be one of the best transportation systems around! I'm not sure how much we're allowed to talk about it, but let me just say that when it's out for sale, people will be really happy with this one. The only weirdness I have discovered is that when I'm cross-sim teleporting, my NIC eventually gets overloaded and refuses to process anymore traffic. I am totally cut off, even from my router, and I have to reboot my PC. I suspect that this is TOTALLY a problem on my end, and nothing to do with ROAM in particular, because I've had this happen before (SL pushes a LOT of traffic towards me, and my link dies.) I have one of those new nForce SLI boards, and the gigabit NIC has always struck me as a touch flakey. I'm waiting till I have a free moment to install a PCI NIC, and am crossing my fingers that this will fix the issue. If any superhigh level smart people have any idea what might be causing this, please let me know. You can email me at bexbase@comcast.net |

This sounds cool. I hope to get one.
But could you sell it in a normal store instead of through the blaze spinnaker Friendship Retail Method (R) requiring me to know and IM somebody, hoping they are online? _____________________

I am curious to see when the game comes back up how well ROAM works when ordinary TP is down. Given recent history of borked TPs after an update this little gadget may just become my best friend.

As I understand it, it's not actually for sale yet; it's in open beta. Hence, like Gmail, you give it to a friend who gives it to a friend, etc. |

I've also been beta testing it the past few days. It's been great! AFAIK, we're allowed to hand them out, so, if anyone wants one, please just ask.

You can email me at bexbase@comcast.net Go into the Second Life preference settings and lower your network speed. I wish I could login right now to tell you the exact name/location of this setting, but its on one of the tabs and should have a bunch of 100 based numbers. Lowering this will *significantly* improve your transports and will make your general SL experience a lot better if you are having NIC troubles due to too much data. |

Thanks Rathe, but that was actually the very first thing I tried. I even lowered it down as far as it would go, but it still siezed up on me after less than a minute of transport. Again, I think it's something to do with my computer per se, vis a vis the on-board NIC. We'll see what happens when I throw a PCI-based card on there to handle traffic instead. |

Well It seems pretty cool to me I handed one off to a friend and we both tried to take off approximately the same time and head over to my place about 10 Sims away. Well she shot straight up through the porch roof, I took off a second later and salaamed into the roof repeatedly till It gave up and claimed it had failed well I think it was being a little hard on itself, after all I don't think I'd even try to fly a helicopter or anything else through the roof of a building. Was silly to think I could, and surprised she made it through no problem. I suspect it may discriminates against short cartoon rabbits due to the extra space between them and ceilings. but aside from that worked pretty well.

ROAM is really, really neat. I've played with it a bit and it's every bit of cleverness you would expect of its creators. Can't wait to see more devices with ROAM functionality built in.

I've been teleporting an awful lot lately, I'd like to test it out too and see what happens. Torley, hook me up, babe!
![]() But I'm a little confused ... does the ROAM require a subscription service? What's that about? |

Torley, hook me up, babe! ![]() But I'm a little confused ... does the ROAM require a subscription service? What's that about? SURE THANG LASH... it confuzzled me too, read the notecard I'll be sending you with the ROAM... it will clarify things. Basically, errr don't quote me on this, but the way Rathe explained it to me is that Wet Ikon (the company) is like a service provider, sort of like a cellphone. So, what he said here: /111/19/47595/2.html#post531412 and the rest of that thread. Teleports seem to be very broken right now so this might be a good time to use the ROAM, provided that outbound email works... eeep. _____________________
