Whenever I meet new to SL folks that say something like "excuse me, I"m new/a noob/newbie" I DO remind them, everyone was new at one point and that anyone who says differently is not worth the pixels it takes to illuminate their text! or somethign like that.
But, the next thing is, I hand them a pile O stuff, clothes, links, items, scripts, anims...etc. so that they can have some more stuff to noodle around with that get acquainted with SL, and Landmarks especially, to the Ivory Tower, Abbotts Aerodrome and other neat fun places that will get them going.
The last thing, I ask that they pass the favor on to someone new when it's their turn to be the experienced SL'er and help someone out. To me, that makes being new exciting, fun and lets us all pay back the favor I was paid when folks helped me out in the begining.
HOWEVER, whenever I "wear" a prim on my head ... I laugh as hard or harder than everyone else calling me a N00b!

From: Ewan Took hmm... 'go away stupid newbie' = offensive 'hello all newbies and welcome to secondlife' = nice I agree that it's the intent and the delivery of how the word is used...

Yeah, I personally think there's a difference between "newbie" and "n00b". I was once (and may still be, in a lot of aspects) a newbie. But I don't believe I have ever been a n00b. When I think of "n00bs", I think of sandbox culture. People that are just stupid or uncourteous and make no attempt whatsoever to assimilate themselves into the "society" we have going on here. "Newbie" is just a word to describe someone who's new.
Of course, either term can be used affectionately, as long as you are somewhat close to the person you are callling that.

"newbie" = "new user"
"n00b" = "new user that thinks l33tsp34k is r0xorz". Aka rude, crude, and talks in single letters." R U M or F? A/S/L?
At least in my opinion. - Newfie
