If you make a post and then someone spots an error in that post and corrects you, what should you do?

Edit as below. I made a correction to the above and it was incorrect. The correction was as below. The above should now be correct. But it was once the below.

If you make a post, and then someone spots an not and error in that post and corrects you, what should you do?

And it was originally:

If you make a post, and then someone spots and error in that post and corrects you, what should you do?

I also took out the comma because I'm thinking it was not right. But it might have been right.

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?

Well that goes without saying, but what do you do with the post itself.

P.S. There isn't much room in the space for putting the poll choices or I would have added that as well at the end of each choice.

Edit the post with the correct information and then in the space that says "Reason For Editing" mention why it was editied?

Instead of just editing out the mistake, I'd do an addendum with the correction at the bottom of the post instead, and thank whoever pointed it out. That way, all quoted bits are still pertinent, and there doesn't need to be a whole square-dance of people editing and removing posts.

:o :o

Well, normally if someone finds an error of mine and points it out, I will leave the mistake, but then add to the bottom of the message:

EDIT: I goofed. Such and such should say Blah and blah not Gek and gek. Thanks XXX for pointing it out!

I normally don't like to take back what I have written. I'm human, I make mistakes. And thankfully my friends understand that I'm one to admit when I have. :)

My exception may be if I told someone about a mistake, and had quoted their mistake in my post. In case that person did not want their mistake known, I would go back and edit that quote out of my post. Of course I usually forget to do this till someone reminds me. :o

Leaving the mistake and making a correction seems to be the best thing. Going back and deleting the post seems like rewriting history.

I leave it openended for who posts afterwards, but I do correct where possible and leave a note. Good communication. And then, what follows, follows!

haha.. Ok. Rather than beating around the bush. I am certain this was started due to the other thread. First off, I want to say I am very sorry if I in any way upset you by pointing out the mistake. I normally only mention mistakes to people I care about. For my own reasons. :p

But anyway, using that situation as an example, here is what happened:

========
You posted XXX

I Quoted your "XXX" post, and asked if perhaps you mean "YYY"

You posted to say "yes, I meant YYY" and you also posted that I should have sent you a PM to correct your mistake, not post it publicly.

I posted that I was sorry I did not send you a PM first, and explained my brain blip.

Then a 3rd person posted that since I had quoted you, the mistake was still there to be seen even though you had fixed it.

Feeling you were already upset because I public posted rather than PM you, I took her advice and edited my post to remove the quote of yours I had used.
========

So in all honesty, a situation happened to me that is not normal. But it happened in the end the way that it did because I was afraid you were upset I had left the quote, and I did not want you upset.

I guess my heart was in the right place, but nothing I do in this situation seems to be right. :(

Oh no, this happened because I now have weekends off. I just went from a job that was 2pm to 10:30pm Wed through Sun to a job that is 9am to 5:30pm Mon through Friday. I am now a normal person with weekends off and lots of extra time to be around you normal people. Therefore I am having fun in the forums.

Please, whatever you do, do not take me seriously. I am the silliest person I know.

Yeah, it's kind of silly that way. You post a thread and then go back and post the poll. Sometimes it can take a few to get the poll questions typed up. It would be nice if it showed up at the same time. So I understand.

But I repeat:

Please, whatever you do, do not take me seriously. I am the silliest person I know.

You win the prize. I put that in intentionally to see if anyone would catch it. You are the first to catch it. Julian was paying attention. It only took 15 posts. LOL.

Where April's poll reads "someone post to the thread" it should read "someone posts to the thread"; there should be an "s" on the end of "post".

ReallyRick's "editied" should be "edited".

I hope you enjoy having weekends off, April.

Well now that just doesn't make sense for someone like me who just came across this whole thread and only figured it out at the end of the page.

I like what Jonquille said, make the correction, and then below it (in the same post) just say "Thanks to so-and-so for correcting me."

Neat, clean, and clear.

And even if you didn't post a "thank you" most people could figure it out anyway.

Yes I am enjoying my weekends off. Actually SuezanneC, in these cases, the errors did not detract from the understanding of the post. In the previous mistake, it was with a name, which can lead to confusion. I was typing fast when I was writing the poll because I knew the post was already on the board.

Some corrections can be usefull for clarifications. Some are just nitpicking. Some people nitpick to help boost their ego, but I'm sure this isn't the case with you. Thank you for your help. Please feel free to take apart any posts I write if it will help you in anyway. In fact, I will try to leave some errors in each posts I make just so you can enjoy correcting them. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Once many months ago someone posted an ad for a new attraction and there was a grammar error in the ad. I posted in thread that there was a grammar error. Ther person took it personally, went nuts, and thier friends PM me about it the whole thing. I thought it really wasnt a big deal, I mean everyone makes mistakes. I don't care if people point out my mistakes, this is a message board I don't take it that serious. The poster took it very serious and went as far as making a racist webpage about me, and it all started from correcting a simple mistake.

For misspellings / grammar, I would invisibly correct them. Most people aren't as pedantic about other people's spelling as me, although if I hadn't thought you did that on purpose (given the topic) I wouldn't have been jerk enough to point it out. :)

If the error is one of logic or a big enough grammar goof that it changes the meaning of your statement, you can simply change it and put the reason in the "reason for editting" field that gets put unobtrusively at the bottom of your post. See below.

I originally did that in another post, but then someone wanted the post corrected the correction to be either corrected or deleted, which led me to this poll. So I am assuming you are saying not to remove the post correcting the error and quoting the corrected error incorrectly?

:p

April, you seem like a really nice person. Just use common sense. Just 'cause someone wants a post deleted or something doesn't mean you have to do it.

Also, you could, in fact, remove all the text in your post and just put "Error corrected" or "Post deleted" or even "Never mind, ignore this post" or "Look elsewhere for fun and popcorn."

Yes, I know I could have done that. But this is so much more fun. Is it okay that I start a poll aobout it? I just like discussing stuff. I thought this was an entertaining topic. And I thought I was using common sense. No harm I think. I wasn't really looking for advice but more of a topic of discussion. That's what the forums are for, or so I thought.
