Help make a Trademark and Copyright policy

Ok with everyone wanting to get ride of trademarked and copyrighted items it seems we need to submit a plan to Linden Labs and get everyone to agree to it. If we do this then maybe we can have this resolved faster.

This is not a right or wrong areguement this is a "What can be done" discussion where we need examples not just words. By examples I mean do not say "Remove it all" How would you suggest it be done so it is fair to everyone.

So Far this is what I have:

Hire one new Linden per SIM. This includes private sims as well. They will check each property for copyrighted music and video and make sure they have proper usage to play that media. They will also check each vendor to make sure no copyrighted items are being sold. If they come across any of the above the offending parties have 48 hours to remove the offending content from thier land. Failure to do so will result in alerting the copy right holder so that they may press any legal action they deem neccessary. If they do not press legal action LL will take it as a sign that future dealings with said products will not violate copyright/trademark.

As this is being done a new series of rules involving all uploadable items and building will take effect:
A) All uploaded items will be delayed up to 24 hours in delivery to your account as it is checked to make sure it does not violate any trademarks or copyrights. Anyone breaking a trademark or copyright will have the item denied and will recieve a warning.

B) Full building tools and the ability to make basic prims will be only available in sandboxes as that will be the only location building may be done. As you make something before leaving you must submit it to a Linden rep who will review it for any possible trademark or copyright violations before sending it back to you for your use. Again this could take up to 24 hours. Anyone breaking a trademark or copyright will have the item denied and will recieve a warning. Sandboxes will be fenced in and only accessable by an entery area. Noone can Tp in or out of sandboxes.

Also after this time any and all copyright/trademark violations will result in suspension if made in world. If caught by using the steps listed above the invidually listed punishments will be done instead. Suspension would occur for basicly joining items together to make the illegal work outside of the sandboxes.


What do you all think? What else do we need to add to it? Of course LL will need to charge more to help offset the hiring of the extra Lindens.

I sure hope you are not serious and that your post is meant to illustrate exactly what we do NOT want to happen here. Ok, surely that is what you are doing. Just checkin'. Whew!

It is meant as an informative idea. People want stricter controls on trademarks and copyrights. Noone seems to offer solutions so I went with what I could see as the best idea.

At the same time it is meant in sarcasm and humor as frankly this would cause more problems for everyone as well....but it is a start.

What is wrong with the current system?
The residents have just started to learn that they themselves have to police it. Give it some time, maybe it will work out great.

This has been an ongoing arguement for the last...two or three months. Granted I am new so could be going on longer. I understood the TOS and its relation with how to report copyright/trademark violations from day one. So did my mother and she doesn't even play the game.

Also this self police is going to turn into a riot or the like as honestly there are legal ones out there and people will continually harss those legally used ones out of lack of knowledge. Also the enforcement seems very selective even in these "blanket" abuse reports. I could log in, move within my own sim of only houses and have at least two or three abuse reports for trademark/copyright. Heck I can find them even WITH IN THIS FORUM! There is a flagrant violation currently posted in the products wanted area posted in the last 24 hours.

Also reports of abuse are going to go to LL anyways which means they will still need new manpower.

There was discussion about it for months, but not that much i believe.
But only recently did the shit hit the fan, when Shiryu Musashi got reported. (22 days ago)

It died down until Cereal got reported recently, and that got some extra attention and gave others the idea that mabye we should be more proactive about reporting the trademark violations. I think we must first see where this leads us. (last couple of days)

As for fear that people continully report people who has a license. Once LL knows that person has a license, all that they have to do click delete and send a auto response message out that is dealt with. I also believe that LL encourages people to tell them if they have a license. So they can deal with it more quickly. maybe there could be some public record for residents to see whom has a (by LL verified) license.

I'll put my two cents in this real fast. They wanted drama and to stir the pot. I've not reported but dealt with a Copyright violation without LL intervention and found the person delightful and more cooperative then I would have been.



Yes that is a great idea but you assume people ARE going to report it or are educated enough to know. Sadly few are or care.

I will quit SL and never play again if those things in the OP come true.

Trust me as much as I mention these things this is just a straight forward call it as I see it thing. I'm not saying I agree with it...call it devil's advocate or enlightenment if you want. If these did get made I would be right with ya Satai.

Question is do we implement this stuff, keep whining, or be quiet and realize the bigger picture. Frankly I just got tired of being quiet and hearing black or white, red light or green light.
