I remember in high school I was sitting there eating lunch and this guy pulled up in the parking lot with a big ol' Confederate flag on his pickup truck. He wanted attention, he got it -- my initial instinct was to feel offended, but then I got confused about why I was offended (the guy was a jerk even if he hadn't had the flag up there). I didn't know enough about the symbolism of Confederate flags to feel justly offended so I just felt confusion.

Anyway, everyone was talking about it. Mind you this was California. The one black guy in the high school swooped over and chatted with him and this other guy started talking about "How totally fucked up that is" that the flag was on the truck.

A lot of people take offense at the Confederate flag because to them it means that the person wearing it is in favor of the slavery of black people. The point of view that Isis has is not often voiced.

I just think that a lot of people get confused when they see the Confederate flag, that's all. Especially in a state like California when you don't really know what it means. What DOES it mean? Pride for the South? Does it mean that you wish that you really were a separate country after all? Does it mean that you feel you should have slaves if you want to?

If she wanted to show pride for where she was from, why didn't she use the damn state flag? I don't get it.

Those who use the flag are usually as ignorant as those who are offended by the flag. The orginal intent of those who flew that flag over their regiment has been tainted by the bigotry of the new wave of "southern/white" pride. History has been lost to those who wish to repurpose a symbol. The true meaning of the flag lies in deep rooted anger over the treatment of millworkers and the protective tariffs imposed by the northern states.

The pride should be what I already detailed and is for many. Unfortunately the few screaming bigots drown the whisper of truth. Take a look at what the southern poor went through in their dealings with the textile industry. The horrors of child labor, mill towns and the indentured servitude of the workers to the mill owners are all valid reasons for over 90 percent of the population to be angry with the north.

I am a mountain girl. My family was a different kind of poor, yet still reading the letters of the nurses and inspectors who pleaded on behalf of the poor in the south makes me weep. The idea of slavery makes saddens me as well. Both are valid reasons for some sort of revolt. As I said before lack of education and a hatred towards the slave trading northerners who benefited from the cheap labor contributed to the war-minded southern states.

Yes, if that matters ;)

Bigotry is bigotry regardless though ...

unless exceptions should be made for certain forms of bigotry. What do you think?

Only in the case of W-Hats/SA Goons. Then it is okay.

All trolling aside. I think folks should get over the past, and worry about the present and the future. Don't forget the past, but don't dwell on it either.

Isn't that the dress that Rupaul wore in the movie To Wong Foo for the drag queen of the year contest? I believe her name was Rachel Tension :)
