The General Forum sucks now. Censorship dulls life. Tip toe..tip toe. Now I'll have to work. It's all gray and bland. Passion and vivid colors become apathy and pastels. Heartfelt opinions become political correctness. I'm bored, and may be forced to buy a life. Alas..poor Ulrik..I knew him well..

<--has no idea what she is talking about Hate to contribute to general suckage, but don't you think there should be a balance of opinion in the general forum? Dramah is oh-so-cool and makes for interesting reading, but too much screaming makes the forums a tad too Jerry Springer-esqe (without the missing teeth and mullets, of course). There are some truly great minds and some wicked senses of humor posting here--I would hate to see them disappear (especially because they have been banned), but there are also voices of caring and philanthropy using this forum to be heard. I, for one, need some rainbows and Carebears during my day. Bland enough, David?

"Heartfelt opinions"? No. Now that the drama has been temporarily crushed, many people here have nothing to say. Which tells me a whole bunch. SL was presented to me as a place where the dialogue was relatively intelligent, about interesting things, and not really catalyzed by equal doses of synthetic estrogen and testosterone in liter amounts. I've talked to a number of good, intelligent people who've been in SL for a year or two. They no longer come to the forums. They're not inworld much anymore, either. They have reasons that seem all too obvious. If I wanted to hunt living things during my rec time, I'd take my rifle and go after elk or cougar, not fling non-sequiters, entendres, and scatalogical phrases at squirrels from behind some anonymous rock.

Oh, I don't know, I think it's been a big improvement.
I think a lot of people are realising though that they can't go back to their flaming ways and not just commit all the same crimes that they were always accusing Prok of.
That's why it probably seems quiet.
Which is all good. Hopefully this might be the start of an interesting forum with clear, thoughtful and polite debate!

The passion and vivid colors were mainly personal attacks, diatribes, soapboxes, drama, conspiracy theories, and other useless tripe that made the general forum little more than a poo flinging contest. I'm happy to see active moderation happening, even if it means I get my own hand slapped from time to time.

Does one realize one is flinging poo when one thinks their poo don't stink?

But passionate arguments and point-counter point stuff is great. However, when some folks tried the old one-two counter punch thing, the threads got closed. It seems only peace and fluttering, downy-soft harmony should be evidenced here now. I think it's great to disagree and argue for ones point of view, though I don't like it when folks try to intentionally be hurtful or mean spirited. You can attack someones point of view or opinion, without attacking the person. Though a good old anything-goes-enter-if-you-dare flame forum would be fun

It's definitely a fine distinction between attacking an idea in an acerbic way and making a personal attack. I'll always prefer we err on the side of allowing people to speak freely rather than getting too reactionary, and I agree that if all we get left with are people skipping merrily along shooting rainbows and butterflies out of their butts that would be just as bad as constant flame wars. I doubt I'd ever report a post that was a pesonal attack towards me since I'm pretty thick skinned. I might sling a bit of poo myself. This forum was badly in need of a smackdown though so hopefully if it gets a bit less out of hand the moderation will get a bit more relaxed again. It'll probably be a constant cycle. For what it's worth I consider myself one of the problem posters since I'm strongly opinionated and not always diplomatic in my assessment of certain ideas or agendas. Sometimes you just have to say what you think and take your lumps.

It never fails. When some people can't change other people's minds with their brilliant logic they always resort to poo flinging in the end. I can live just fine without the silly name calling thank you.

In this case, the locked thread was just an extension of another thread that was started about one individual, which was also closed. It was obvious who Flip was speaking about, if one had read Tcoz' thread started about Flip
People ask for consistency by the mods. This is what I would call consistency.
It also shows, despite the claims of some wound lickers, that the mods do not play favorites.
In the end, there is no "free speech" here. These boards are owned by LL and should be governed as such. As Robin and many other Lindens have said time and again, there are other methods of continuing personal disputes that evolve from empassioned thread debates. IM, PM, and SLU are always there.
The way people get upset everytime something gets locked down makes me wonder. What is it that they think these personal arguments accomplish here in the SL forums? If they want to fight they can take it over to SLU. Is the issue audience size?
Now surely someone could say, "But Nolan, you have contributed to the drama in the past", and they will be right, and I freely admit that I have. However, I do not get upset when those dramas I was involved in get locked or edited. That's that chance we all take when we step into the ring.

Up with LL taking their forums back! I really wish the old rants section could be revived. I believe that would really help the overall demeanor of the general forum. I set up a poll a while back on this subject, maybe it's time for a bump. Poll on whether or not to bring back the rants section: /108/48/40344/1.html

The bad news: it is between Kahlil Gibran and Patty Hearst.
