I'm for any changes that mean my being a total jerkoff matters less, economically.

I believe it is only the part of your stipend that is coming from positive ratings and not the whole thing. This will be painful for those that rely on their ratings to bump up their stipend - like Torley! ;)

BTW - welcome back, Torley!!

From: Philip Linden
+ Within two weeks, a 50% reduction in the bonus amounts paid out as weekly 'Stipend Ratings'. This is the incentive amounts paid to users who have received a realtively large number of positive ratings.]

+ Within 6 weeks, removing completely the remaining incentive amounts paid out in these 'Stipend Ratings'. This means that ratings will no longer have any effect on L$ paid to residents.

Does this mean we still get the regular $500 or $50 stipend, right? And dwell?

Thanxies Juro.

Well, what I'm just concerned with is the stipend was cut in a similar fashion several months ago, and now it's happening again. For those who've taken a plunge and have to take another hit, might be a hard pill to swallow.

I will continue to live out of my dumpster and throw myself at the mercy of generous passerby! ;)

Cocoanut yes that's the impression I'm getting.

This is a move to a more free market, it will only help SecondLife become more economically viable.

Instead of people sitting around collecting welfare checks, it will encourage people to either get to work or buy L$.

Bravo on LL's part!! Lets keep moving towards a free market!!

After the slump the L$ has been taking since April, it seemed inevitable that changes were going to be made. Glad to see it happening sooner rather than later.

On the flip side, I'd like to see refunds for unused/deleted texture uploads as has been brought up before. Unlike the currency exchange changes, at least there's a decent chance this money will go to something creative. The changes to currency exchange may only make it easier for people to afford to watch XXX movies in SL. I'm doubting that's the kind of compelling content LL is hoping to nurture. And as there's apparently no way to really measure the effects of the new currency exchange on the creation of PRable (useable by Linden PR dept) content, at least a refund would go into the hands of people uploading content and not just consuming it.

Fewer money in circulation means fewer content creators. Why? People who have less money spend less money. Now you have too many content creators competing for a smaller market.

Want a real world economy, well real world recession comes with that. (recessions aren't like weather, random, they are planned)

So get in that soup line.

Things that make me go ... hmmmmm
08-31-2005 14:31
First off, I'm all for stabilizing the value of the Linden Dollar.
Stipend cuts, removal of their value as a "no talent necessary" income source is something I have mixed feelings about but don't see a better option atm.
The introduction of intra-SL monetary exchanges looks to be interesting, hopefully helpful, maybe less glamourous than using GOM.

So then I think ...

Is LL gonna take a %age, a cut/bite/fee on in world money exchanges?

Is this changed designed to drive more monetary traffic through the upcoming in-world money exchange system, driving more fees (%age as sink) back to LL to create a more self-supporting system?

And then I think ...

Oh the hysterical rants to follow in the forums!! Days of amusing reading upcoming!

Has SL just become the biggest impetus for taking Econ classes?

Never dull here, that's for sure!

And futhermore.... THE SKY IS FALLING! OHNOES!

SL will move on, SL will survive. All of the metaphors for unpleasantness and "sweatshops" I find completely laughable, as we all sit back and waste time in our electric playland.

HALLELUJAH!!! :)

Edit: Seriously, this has been out of whack and unfair now for newer people for quite some time. This will serve to level the playing field, stipend-wise, for a lot of folks.

Ahh, yes, the economy and modifications thereto. I remember how much fun that was to watch last time around, in January. Actually, those events firmly cemented me as a forum participant. I will enjoy seeing all the sobbing and moaning about this latest modification.

Personally, I have no problems at all with this. I rarely buy anything, and very few people I know rate anyways...

I gets around $47L a week from my ratings.

The shop-a-holics might be having problems...

hmmm.. Think more people will start buying Linden dollars now?

I'm no economist, but I would think that would be the case.

Oh, and I'm fine with this change. I make a nice little bit from my ratings, but I agree it isn't fair to new people who came after ratings were given out like candy. I wanted a wipe when the ratings system changed, but that was pretty drastic I suppose. This will be a good compromise though. At least in my opinion. :)

Don't worry, Pen. I logged into preview the other day. The bug where ratings weren't being wiped has been fixed. My rates have gone from being the mid-100's to the single digits. So even without the changes, seasoned accounts would be getting knocked down a peg or two on their bonus scale. Ratings might start to mean things again. :D

6 weeks to go. We just patched, roll back and make it happen NOW! Oh well, at least it's finally coming.
