On the news they just showed these machines that are now x-rated xray machines. you step in a booth and it scans you. Basically stripping your clothes off virtually to show the airport security your not wearing metal or drugs.
What does everyone think of this? There is activist saying "no, its invasion of privacy." but I think they are gonna pass it anyway. I personally think it is a good idea. I'd rather step into a dumb box then to have somebody fondle my boobs for a body check, which they do now.

Only see value in this, if they have everything else up to scratch too. The money would be better spent doing background checks on airport staff, for example.

I am less concerned about some stranger seeing my birthday suit than being blasted with radiation. Even the medical community discourages frequent, unnecessary X-Rays for medical purposes.

From what I've seen in airports, I think the security scanning people deserve a raise.
99% of the world looks better with their clothes on.

I'm for it, as long as all the screeners are naked while they do their job.

There are ways of concealing stuff internally aren't there anyway?
Would it find cannabis resin in a condom stuck you-know-where?
If it's easy to get round then not worth the money I imagine...

Take the trains, no x-ray, no search, no hassles.

After recently getting marked with the Scarlet "*S*" on a recent trip, I'm beginning to have more antagonism toward our splendid TSA (motto: "Inventing New Rules Weekly to Justify Our Existence" policies that have been so damn effective at stopping air terrorism. Having been made to nearly Clothing>Remove All... at Checkpoint Charlie with a sheet of glass to ensure to ensure my privacy, I figure next time I'll just throw everything into the scanner and walk through the Helmholtz coil starkers. It would be in the name of National Security, so I expect it is not only permissable but encouraged. In case you never got the Scarlet "S" on your boarding pass, I think it stands for "Suspected terrorist" or "proof that we don't just harrass arabS" or "Search dem body cavitieS". The best part is that the scarlet letter stays with you for each leg of your journey.

I guess this is snowballing into a rant, but damn this stuff is taken straight from Orwell or the TSA website (so hard to tell the difference): Am I wearing the right shoes?
You are NOT REQUIRED to remove your shoes before you enter the walk-through metal detector. However, TSA screeners may encourage you to remove them before entering the metal detector as many types of footwear will require additional screening even if the metal detector DOES NOT alarm. So you are not required, unless we require you. And of course during my recent experience, before prodding every square centimeter of me, they would ask "I now need to fondle your genitalia, is that okay?" as if I actually had a choice in the matter. Say "no" and it's off to Room 101 for you, buddy. I do have to say this for the staff though: given the absurd policies they must follow, they were far more polite than I would have expected.

Can we just have a Nudest Plain?? No really. It would be allot better if we all just got on naked. Can’t hide any thing. And do you really think some mad man will want to hijake a plain when they are naked? Most people I know are more laid back when they are naked.

I know this is not going to be a popular answer but perhaps if our bodies were exposed to the world once in a while we would take better care of them.

It's not a popular answer. Go to a nudest colony or naturest colony. I have and truest me it's not a popular answer at all. You know the old saying, "If you got the body to be naked your not, if you don't you are."

If people would stop hollowing out their shoes and hiding things in them, then you wouldn't be required to remove your shoes. Most people seem to fail to understand that metal detectors will not pick up items such as explosives, ceramic knives, and other deadly things that have been found hidden inside shoes. These kind of items are made of plastic or glass. Having people take off their shoes so these things can found and kept off the planes is a good thing.

This is the kind of detail those airport scanners provide...

From: Sextus Baphomet This is the kind of detail those airport scanners provide...... Two things. First, these pics are old and the scanners have a bit better resolution than this now. I have screenshots (cant find them on the net this AM, sorry) that make a woman going through them look completely naked except for the lack of surface details like nipples and vulva. Why exactly should some asshole security man get to sit at a monitor looking at folks stripped of their clothes (and dignity) all day? Terrorist threat? Yeah right, pull the other one. Secondly, I would like to say as a non-American that I am shocked that I read this entire thread and find that no one seems to be upset by this. This is a complete Orwelian invasion of your rights, freedoms, liberties etc. The exact same freedoms that Americans are always going on about, yet no one seems to care. Interesting... (to me anyway)

From: someone these pics are old and the scanners have a bit better resolution than this now. A given. I am sure the ones that get published even today will be old by next week. C'est technologie. Here is an updated one... From: someone that make a woman going through them look completely naked except for the lack of surface details like nipples and vulva. Why exactly should some asshole security man get to sit at a monitor looking at folks stripped of their clothes (and dignity) all day? So is it ok for an asshole security woman to sit looking at naked men all day? What ever happened to equality of the sexes? Why is it a woman's nakedness more important than a man's? From: someone This is a complete Orwelian invasion of your rights, freedoms, liberties etc.
Agreed, but I think the blame goes to Usama Bin Landen and his band of radical goons and maybe a little to all those 'allies' that still refuse to see the threat to the West, not necessarily to the people in charge of providing airport security. When I travel, I do not bitch at the airport security people, but instead I curse Bin Laden and cross my fingers that an allied missile will make him a martyr soon. So these machines are in fact a by-product of "The exact same freedoms that Americans are always going on about" as instead of scanning only those belonging to suspicious looks, Americans will scan all in the pursuit of equality and to avoid ethnic profiling. Actually, odds are that they will never be put into production by the TSA, so maybe it is a moot discussion.

It's funny, Nicholson Baker went at some length into the 'disadvantages' of this kind of x-ray vision in his novel The Fermata. Sexy it is not. Jess

Wel I was thinking of personal experience so I phrased it that way. No intent to discriminate here. The point is this is wrong for anyone. From: Sextus Baphomet ... I think the blame goes to Usama Bin Landen and his band of radical goons and maybe a little to all those 'allies' that still refuse to see the threat to the West, not necessarily to the people in charge of providing airport security..... You have been taken in by all the hype and propoganda it seems. Do the same amount of research on the terrorist threat that you have on this device and you will see that it doesnt actually exist. Also, freedoms taken away are hardly ever restored (historically speaking). This technology if put in place will probably be used more for drugs more than terrorists, and once it's common place in the airports will likely become comonplace in institutions of all kinds, schools, libraries etc. Not to mention the idea that private companies might also buy and operate such devices. Who could argue that local 7-11 store shouldn't have one at the door, when it is already comonplace elsewhere? This is the thin end of that slippery slope that folks always talk about.

From: someone You have been taken in by all the hype and propoganda it seems. Hype and propaganda you say? Iraq, London, Israel, Bali, Kenya, Tanzania, Russia, Munich, Madrid, The Phillipines... Forget 9/11. These animals have been around inflicting pain for decades, problem is people prefer to close their eyes to reality and ignore it.

No offence, but this just sounds like paranoia to me. Sure these things *could* be done, but it's not worth living in a police state to avert the (stastically highly unlikely) possiblity of being blown up IMO. To stop terrorists you have to win hearts and minds, not slap handcuffs on your own population.
