Its got something to do with sex in Second Life and disney land...

Read on, it's actually a wonderful article about the freedom of SL. :)

Kinky, but it's about freedom.

SL goes down as the greatest public freak fest on the Internet.

Classic !

Interesting article but the author seems somewhat sex-obsessed. Sometimes a banana is just a banana.

Well, I don't think the freedom do that "kind" of stuff is a good thing. I'm all for great builds and stuff but somethings in Second Life just make me fly the hell away from that area.

But that's the point. You don't have to enjoy it - Others do, and they have the freedom to do it. You can go build, or chat, or whatever, and leave the people who enjoy it to it.

Which is kinda the articals point.

I liked it, because the core feeling I get from this writer is they 'get' SL. Its about freeing your mind, really. I was a frickin fatass and didn't like what I was doing in RL. I've totally turned that around, in no small part SL had a lot to do with it -- I was able to see myself differently, and then aspired to be different. Seems easy to catalyze change within yourself - but sometimes you just need a fresh perspective, and SL did that for me.

if you want to understand Second Life, look at punk rock. It's the closest thing in media that's not Second Life to what Second Life is. That's because both punk and SL are about freedom. Punk fetishizes the freedom to do anything - Anarchy! Second Life allows the freedom to fetishize anything. SL players, being people, have taken that as a sacred cause.

Great article!

In order for freedom to work, we all have to have courage -- courage both to express ourselves honestly and to tolerate the expression of others.

Great stuff.

We are either free or enslaved, and in SL we enjoy many freedoms.

Sometimes these freedoms are taken for granted, and sometimes these freedoms are frightening, but I would rather it be this way.

The best thing about that story is there is not one mention anywhere of anyone trying to make any money. It is solely slanted on creativity and imagination and the freedom to express it. Some of the views are a bit extreme, but it accomplishes the desired impact. It is refreshing to see a story like this that explores some unspoken truths about life in SL beyond commerce.

That was my thought too, Loki. Even as someone who gets interviewed fairly often as "token person who makes money in SL," it always seems to me that all the articles that focus on that are missing the point of what SL is all about.

That article really sums up how I feel about SL.

We need more people thinking like him.

Wow, Second Life is SO like punk rock. The creative, irreverent, often jarring experiences in SL make me think of the same kind of creative explosion that came from punk rock. They're kin.

Or, they would be pretty much alike, if you could only listen to punk rock at CBGB, inc., and if the musicians and audience were permitted the freedom to create and enjoy any type of music they wished, limited only by the Community Standards, and that, in addition to abiding at all times by the Community Standards, you agree that you shall not: (i) take any action or upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Content that infringes or violates any third party rights; (ii) impersonate any person or entity, including, but not limited to, a CBGB employee, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity; (iii) take any action or upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Content that violates any law or regulation; (iv) take any action or upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Content as determined by CBGB at its sole discretion that is harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, causes tort, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable; (v) take any actions or upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Content that contains any viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time bombs, cancelbots or other computer programming routines that are intended to damage, detrimentally interfere with, surreptitiously intercept or expropriate any system, data or personal information; (vi) take any action or upload, post, email or otherwise transmit any Content that would violate any right or duty under any law or under contractual or fiduciary relationships (such as inside information, proprietary and confidential information learned or disclosed as part of employment relationships or under nondisclosure agreements); (vii) upload, post, email or otherwise transmit any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation; (viii) interfere with or disrupt the Service or servers or networks connected to the Club, or disobey any requirements, procedures, policies or regulations of networks connected to the Club; (ix) attempt to gain access to any other user's Account or password; or (x) "stalk" or otherwise harass another user. You agree that Hilly Kristal may take whatever steps it deems necessary to abridge, or prevent behavior of any sort on the Service in its sole discretion, without notice to you.

But other than that, they're pretty damn similiar :)

"Man, I never paid for any of my dicks. Girls buy them for me."

My favorite line. Except as we all know 5 times out of 10 the girl is a MAN, baby.

I thought it was overall a great article and well-written.
A positive piece about freedom and creativity for a change! Yay!

The only caveat I would put on it at all, is that it's obviously written by a very young person (based on the style of writing and the misuse of a few terms), and I was dissapointed with the "thesis" at the end.

To say that Second Life is like Punk is to reveal your complete lack of knowledge about Punk IMO. Clearly someone who was not born when punk was a real thing and not just a tired spirit haunting teen music magazines. :)
