Okay, IMHO is that violet is a (edited) starving for attention. I feel bad for the new players that get negged and don't realize that the rating system is going to go through a big overhaul soon anyways. Until then, nothing we can really do but just ignore the attention whore.

Wednesday 10PM game time

This person, thing, whatever is hanging in the welcome area tonight neg rating numerous people. Violet Manhattan is just rude and serves no point here. She is the alt of a game playing piece of shit and I for once would ask LL to remove it from the world. Her pal Daniel Luchador was defending her even as she neg rated those around her. I don't know why or if there is a reason to all this, but I would like it to stop.

Ok, I have to admit when I first heard about this person, I thought she was evil evil evil. Tonight I went to the welcome area and she DID give me a good laugh. She was holding a sign with a kitten on it that said "I hate everything"

I look at more now as someone role playing the part of a miserable, dark spirited grumpy person. She obviously is just role playing because that sign take a good sense of humor.

Congratulations on all of the negs. I really have to tip my hat to you.

With new residents who get neg-rated, you usually have to explain, er... something like: "The ratings system is useless and doesn't really mean anything anymore." And they'll ask "Why is it still here then?" and then you have to explain, and the cycle repeats again. Most newcomers I meet would rather spend their money on, like, a new pair of shoes. Maybe there'll be someone who says "I wear my negs proudly or like a badge of honor!" in there. As you can see, RRL = Really Redundant Loop which sucks. It's inevitable change will happen, but in the meantime, to leave it hanging around... bleh.

I'd rather have that whole ratings panel crapcanned and replaced with a funny area to make a little doodle or links to favorite SL-related websites or whatever, or another idea that's been tossed around by some of my friends, an area to leave notecards and freebies you wanna hand out to others. THEY CAN JUST CLICK AND SNAG. (This also came to my mind after getting IM requests for various objects like Fran's animation overrider.)

This thread was funny for the first few pages but then I skipped to the end cause I figure there are probably lots of boring words after that.

Ok, I get the "humor" that people find funny, but for God's sake, do we really need someone who negs for fun? Is it ok for someone to do something wrong that you would normally find annoying/offensive just because they make you laugh?

I understand sarcasm and stuff -- it's always easier to understand art, or humor, if you know where it comes from. However, you don't need this. You don't need people asking why they got negged at the Welcome Area. You don't need someone telling someone they're too slutty or ugly or dumb at the Welcome Area. This is not a grassroots movement, people. This is not some sort of big joke. This is someone who enjoys making people who don't know more about SL feel bad. I'm not interested in random cruelty. And I'll be damned if I shut up when she's around me negging people.

and yet still no one can tell me why its so wrong to exercise your use of the ratings system in a negative way to people you dont know but its fine and dandy to positive rate them. It's not a compliment to triple rate someone who doesnt deserve it. It's bullshit is what it is.

You just cannot throw people out the door for 'abusing' the ratings system, because that's pretty much anyone who still actually uses it, from what I can tell. It's just they abuse it with bullshit pos ratings instead of bullshit neg ratings.

The very best thing you can do is just explain to naive, upset negged person that ratings, both positive or negative, mean fuck fucking all!

In my earlier days on SL, I regarded my SL as a social sign of meeting people, because growing up as an extreme introvert, I didn't see a lot of folks. So it meant a lot to me. After all, I had to go to a lot of events to get rates up like that. LOL.

It was but one mere slice in a much greater pie, but it was certainly encouraging.

My built rates are invalid because I'M NOT A BUILDER, but the actual comments that came along with some of the Behavior ratings were very, very touching (think life-affirming stuff here). I wish I could have kept them all, but since they aren't saved, I'll echo your sentence, K-Rizzle.

Well, see, again, this is where opinion and interpretation comes into stuff. While you don't build in any serious way, you have a penchant and flair for, shall we say, severe customisation, and you're very creative. So I'd build rate you based on that. You don't have to build a fancy great house to impress me! I'd hope you would still consider it a valid endorsement

And this is the thing... thats what ratings are. Subjective. Personal. Opinion. If people - even if everyone - doesn't like the way one person uses theirs, well... tough tits, really.

Except the issue, really, is that she likes to give negs just because of the reaction. And obviously you *shouldn't* give her a reaction --

It's the gratification she gets when she negs someone new, that's all -- before they fully understand that negs don't mean anything. Obviously we could explain to them that negs don't mean anything. And I'm not saying that people would honestly walk away from SL just because they got negs ... as long as there was someone there to explain that it was meaningless.

As Loki said before, she can play the sweetheart, and she's got a lot of supporters because she's nice to them.

I second your motion of scrapping ratings and implementing this doodle area.

Adding to this post: Ratings are (imho) a way to increase social status in the community. If ratings disappeared one day, the well-liked people would still be well-liked, and the not-so-liked folks would still be... eh, you get the picture.

Personally, I'd be happier if instead of a posrate, people would just give me L$25 and say "Captain Barmy, you're a good man. Here's L$25. Have a nice day."

Violet contacted me by IM last night. I must say, I hope the Linden's check into her age if possible. She definitely displayed a lack of maturity and the mannerisms of a younger teen. I was hoping for at least some interesting meaness or griefing. Instead I got boring 3rd grade schoolyard stuff.

For the record, let it be known that these three AVs were the ones I was talking about when I posted my story early on in this thread.

She is the one who neg-rated my new player friend when they could not find me, upsetting and mystifying both him and me.

She denies all this on this thread, and denies having any reason to neg rate my friend or me.

This is the type of individual SL does not need. Lindens, perhaps you've succeeded in getting her to stop this behavior. If so, great. If not, she should be banned.
