I think the reasoning for having a huge group is simple

Selective
Lets say you have an event - 1 in 2 people of your selective group would go. Your group is 20 members - thus 10 people show up.

Non-Selective
But lets say you have an event and 1 in 4 people in your non selctive group would go. Your group has 80 members - thus 20 people would show.

Thus twice as many peopel show for dwell .. and Hopefully to spend some money or tip.

If your in the business of making money or having big parties non selctive makes more sense.

However - The mass spamming, and invites without requests , etc. these are not good at all. When I asked Cindy who it was I wasnt surprised =/.

The definitely needs to be a group mute feature. Actually we need a better chat system period.

Anyone who has played a more modern MMORPG can tell you , Second Life's Chat system is far from state ot the art. Something Like Anarchy Online's or Eve's Chat is much more versitile. THe odd thing is, in second life there is More social interation then those not less.

Colette makes an excellent point. But in fairness, I should add that the better chat systems in other virtual worlds (including but not limited to MMRPGs) have all evolved from their release point until ultimate refinement. For example, Everquest now has, after years of incremental changes, the ability to create non-guild chat groups on the fly, alter text font/color in individual windows and so forth. Anarchy Online's chat system really doesn't have much to recommend itself over Star Wars Galaxies, which is about where EQ was 3 or 4 years ago (last I saw anyway - I quit SWG over a year ago). World of Warcraft added cross-server chat in one of their first major upgrades.

I think Second Life has a great start, but additional flexibility, customization and an easy way to tab between chat windows would go a long way to improving things. All that and the ability to mute individual groups! :)

Hehe - actually - when you're talking about the 'big groups' - you're talking 500-1000 members. So even if you get 1 in 20 people to show up - on the high end that's 50 people.

Talk about a lagtastic experience :D

I'm posting too slowly :)

Agree completely, Cindy. Things I'd like to see:

-Granular Group-Mute
-The ability to display chat in different colors with a script (Example: Host Green, Contestant Blue - Audience White).
-Chat-Invisible!
-Configurable Chat distance (0-100m)

hehe True, On a big event night (only a couple a month) we get pretty lagged to death. The fact that we dont have big events every night kind of makes people more willing to go to the Events when we do have them I think.

But if you were in the business to earn money with your club, you would definitely need to be packed often.
