Ok, just wanted to get an opinion on the following matter:

When I see abbreviations such as afk, wtf, ty, and rofl, I think away from keyboard, what the f***, thank you, and rolling on the floor laughing. With "lol" though, for some inexplicable reason, I think "loll." Yes, like "doll" with an "l." Loll. WTF (haha) is wrong with me? Does ANYONE else do the same thing? And do you think the meaning of the abbreviation or do you thing "a-f-k" and "w-t-f?" What's going on?!?!

Someone told me once that AFK meant "out of commission", which I knew was wrong because it was so stupid.

WTF is C3PO supposed to be USEFUL for anyway, besides whining? Stupid piece of scrap metal would be more useful recycled as a toaster. But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

I usually just treat them as words. They each have their own meaning like any other word. Some of them I see it and think the full words that they stand for, wtf, ty, np for example. AFK is a stand alone, I rarely think "away from keyboard" when I see it, I just know it means they are away. I could go on, but I wont. ttyl.

For me, "afk" is usually "away for koffee". The rest of the time, I guess I could use "afp", but I guess that's TMI!

When I first got this interneter thingy I thought lol = Lots Of Love... you can imagine my confusion when 5 people all lol@me. hehe

Some of them are just fun to say as the initials AFK is usualy A-F-K to me, L-O-L the same, wtf i usualy do all the words in my head but its fun to pronounce "wtfff" outloud, same applies for "lmao" or lmaeoh. Some just utterly confuse me FWIW?

Kex, LOL @ B-R-B in RL. I used to work at a place where it was common to hear the letters R-F-N over the intercom, as in, "Loki, come to the shipping office, RFN." Everyone knew RFN stood for "right fuckin now".

I do the same thing. I dunno why, either! When someone says "lol" I hear it phonetically... as "loll"!

But I see "wtf" and "afk" as the letters, not the sound they make together...

Actually, what is really going on is your Angular Gyru, the thing in your brain that translates symbols into sound, has decided that word, for whatever reason, that "LOL" should be read like "loll" probably because it actually *looks* like a word -- meaning, it has two consonants and a vowel in between, it functions more like a real word. Whereas the wtf and afk are odd combinations of sounds, three consonants together like that (doesn't really happen very often in English) and thus, those words don't get translated into sound in the same way. If your native language commonly had odd consonant combinations like that, I betcha you'd turn wtf and afk into "word" like sounds too

Personally, I think the letters out for "lol" but I think them so fast it probably would sound like "loll" if I said it outloud. I also make wtf into a kind of word -- in my head it sounds something like "whathef" and "yw" the same thing -- it comes out sounding like "yurwel" in my brain. I don't, however, do the same for ROFL -- I actually think "rolling on floor, laughing" for that one. I have no idea why. I think my Angular Gyru is a little screwy
