L$10 per p2p TP?

I'm surely not the first person to think of this, but with the latest move by LL to limit inflation by cutting the bonus stipend -- something I personally don't have a problem with -- it occurs to me that if they really wanted to Whip Inflation Now, offering point-to-point teleports at L$10 per might do the trick? Keep the telehub-style teleporting free, of course. I suspect this would suck back a not-insignificant number of Lindens, while also making the pro-p2p TP crowd happy and also still keeping telehub land 'strategic'.

It has been mentioned before, but I think it's a suggestion worth repeating :D

you could always form a "special interest group" to lobby the Lindens

Do you make more than 40 TPs in a month? (I would think so, yes?)

If you answered "yes", then you realize it's cheaper to use the most expensive subscription price for a ROAM unit, right? If you subscribe on a quarterly or yearly basis, then we're talking more like 29 TPs in a month.

Plus with a ROAM unit you get all sorts of useful goodies on top of that: AV tracker that teleports you next to any AV within 96 meters, speed flying (variable) with no altitude loss, nifty platform-style midair jumping that can effectively enable you to fly across a no-fly patch of land, etc.

Or you can use the FREE VERSION that hank ramos posted.

Anyways, ROAM punts you when you pass sim boundaries. Buggy buggy buggy.

I haven't ran into that problem... In general it has been more successful for me that TP's are.

Hypertelportation kicks ass. I've never had a problem with the new stuff. I do hope to impliment a straight commandline version in the future for my own jetpacks.

If they *Had* to charge for P2PT, then yes, 10L$ per teleport would be the only acceptable charge IMO.

I would personaly prefer if it was kept free however. Especialy if a LSL function for it is implemented as charging would stiffle alot of creative ideas that would become less used especialy by newbies... such as Teleport Tours around the grid to interesting places, an example is if Pathfinder's Picks would allow you to directly teleport and go around on a tour. Now if I was a newbie I'd be less likely to do such a thing if it cost me 10L$ per teleport, especialy if I only have 50L$.

Region crossings have been a lot more reliable for me, with the exception of the dreaded "four-corner" nightmare. TPs themselves have improved a great deal (lurve that cancel button and the improved counting mechanism), and I've ROAMed with 1000s of prims on me loaded with scripts and it too, has proven reliable in conjunction with regular TPs to a TH (like a martial arts combo).

L$10 per P2P TP would quickly add up for me. I have TPed hundreds, sometimes thousands of times to certain Telehubs. I'd rather work off a type of debt like "If you TP 100 times within this coverage area, then you can P2P all you want thereafter." It makes sense from the perspective of "I've been here before... redundant!" LOLEX.

I like the idea of p2p teleportation (not including friends), to be a new sink. I think L$5 might be a better amount, though, because it seems smaller.

If by "small minority" you mean "entire economy", then you are of course correct.

Direct teleportation to any location for L$10 without disabling Telehub travel or Offer Teleport would be pointless. Either most people would ignore it and travel the same way they are now, or most people will use it and then what's the point of even having the Telehub system?

Which feels better to you?
  1. What you want to do only can be done at a cost.
  2. What you want to do is possible for free, but not as compelete as you'd like.

Second Life started as #1, but went to #2 because it felt better. Its like going from having a limited number of minutes on your cell phone plan and always worrying you were going over your limit, to having an unlimited plan.

I think Second Life would be best served by having as FEW sources and sinks as possible.

Actually we need more of them, not less. Money sinks benefit all of us by helping to remove excess currency from the economy. I know the "me me me" crowd doesn't understand always how that benefits them, but the healthier the economy, the better it is for all of SL.

Correct. You want to keep your stipend bonus or you want that $4USD/L$1000 exchange rate, you better be arguing for more money sinks.

I'd support a L$10 P2P TP. I'd probably won't use it as much, it doesn't bother me to Telehub and then fly to the location or use a vehicle to get there.

I couldn't agree more Cristiano. The me me me'ers will never get it though.

And, by the way, I am very happy with the official FREE Linden teleporting system. I have never had a problem with it and am not in such a hurry that I would pay to save a few seconds.

This might be a good idea considering that the roam/hyperteleportation devices wont work as designed with 1.7, in that the avatar will no longer be able to fly through buildings, i've tested hanks, and although even with the changes to the system the device still works apart from the phantom av part. so you will collide with objects if present in the flightpath

Hmmm... but ROAM flies the av up, up and away, not through buildings?

I like the idea of paying a small fee to tp direct to a spot AND keeping the current hub system.

Look at it from a RL perspective, well sort of like RL.

Most major cities have a bus system. You can walk to the bus stop and pay $1 to take the bus to the stop nearest to your destination. Or, if your in a hurry or the bus isnt practical to use, you can call a cab and have them pick you up at your door and deliver you straight to your destination. Your going to pay maybe $8 - $20 for the added service the cab provides.

And in SL, you can tp to a hub for free and fly the rest of the way, or you can pay L$10 to go right where you want to be. It seems logical to me.

It would be interesting to see how it worked out anyway. I would probably use a combination of using hubs, paying for a P2P on occasion, and asking people at the desitnation to offer me a tp. I dont think anyone would feel locked into one specific way.

Tell ya'll what. i'll redo Hyperteleportation with clever methods of rezzed objects to people can get around/through stupidly build structures.

I already have a device called a 'portable hole' that sit-teleports you through things, I'll just gri an extreme range on it so you can clear most obstacles.

Me too. In any event, I like the idea of having a choice.

Re ROAM / hyperteleportation systems: I haven't had great experiences with them. Plus I find that about 30% of my TPs are from an island to some mainland location. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they won't really help me there, will they? My usage patterns may be atypical . . . or not.

And while I like having a choice, I also like having my transport system firmly integrated into the framework of the game.

Yes the same with hyperteleporter but when you activate you it takes you upto 1000m i believe, and now if there is a skybox or build above you to that height you will get a collision, as burke said will probably need some code to deal with getting around objects on the way up and down

It seems that people are ignoring or forgeting the possibility of a LSL function for direct teleportation as well.

What about the scenarios I described in my previous post?

As for the collision thing, you can't even go through objects at high speeds? I suppose you could write the code to move in an opposit direction "around" the object. But that cuts into the time. In the long run though any user created service just isn't going to cut it.

O yes... my experience with that is that if I go really fast and it hasn't fully rezzed and I hit it at a high enough velocity, I'll fly right through. It works erratically and it's crazy but it'd be nicer if it was smoother and I didn't collide at all.
