This may be a stupid question, but how can I tell how many prims an object has?

Right-click and choose Edit.
In the first tab, it should say how many prims there are.  _____________________

Right-click the object to edit it. The General tab will tell you how many objects you have selected and how many prims total are in the selected objects.
