Sim Update Announcement

Take a piece of paper, divide it into squares. in some of the squares put a X.

Everywhere you have a X there is a server, that server controls the square and nothing else. You must have a server in a square in order to exist in that square...

In SL terms, if a square does not have a server in it then that square DOES NOT EXIST.
To have contiguous space, every square must have a server...

OK, thanks, I get it now.

But couldn't you have a square of nothing but water, and nothing could be bought or built there, share a server with a regular square? That way, there wouldn't be much on the water square to have to take care of, so it wouldn't take much of the resources of the server it was sharing, but people could fly over it.

And fill in all the blank square voids that way?

LL already does that, they are called void sims, and they run i believe mostly 4 to one cpu, so a two cpu opteron would potentially be running 8 voids.. what LL does not do is share a single cpu with multiple occupied sims, intentionally ^.^

Well, what could you do to get it so people could fly over them?

To fly over (read as through) an 'empty' sim space you still have to have that space controled by a server...

If the Av flying through this 'empty' server were to be visible to others, and have attachments, maybe even be riding a vehicle, then you're up to the same level as a standard sim... Hence the void sims we already have are slow running 'standard' sims.
