I find myself dressing more conservative in real life than I do in Second Life. Do you as well?

I should hope so. I am dressed like a punk, fairy, ballerina in game. Not sure what kind of employment I could sustain if I dressed LESS conservative than that :D

If anything I dress more conservatively in SL. Dinner jacker and fancy hat. :D

Sort of, but not really.

I wear short-ass miniskirts in SL. I like miniskirts in RL too, but just ... not as short :)

Nope, I wear jeans and tshirts mostly in SL. And business casual because I have to in RL. And sometimes I like to wear micro clothes in SL for fun :)

I often wear nice suits in SL because I'm not yet at the point in my life where I can do so with any regularity in RL. :)

I love to wear miniskirts in both First and Second Life and the difference is that my Second Life ones are shorter to say the least. I don't wear black in any life unless I am going to a funeral. So I would say I dress about the same in SL as I do in FL. :)

considering work and work related functions take up most of my day then Yes I do dress less conserative in SL. Outside of that it depends. RL I would love to wear what I wear in SL (except when I go furry I got enough hair as it is). Only other real exception is I can't go out into daylight shirtless in RL since I burn heavily in less then an hour (30 minutes at Daytona and I made lobster jealous.)

I just voted yes on the poll... and then I realized that's not really true yet. I wear a full-length skirt and full-torso shirt to cover up my HIDEOUS pink skin because LL ARE STILL DRAGGING THEIR FEET ON THE LINUX CLIENT so I have to run it under Wine, from which I get messed-up DX8-level graphics and the use of 32 MB of VRAM from my 256 MB DX9-capable card.

Er, anyway...

I'm kind of suprised that the poll results are roughly 50-50 so far. But what I'm really curious about, is *why* do those who dress less conservatively in SL do so?

* Do you think your RL body doesn't look good enough? (if only we could all really be children of Ruth...) (Is it even good that we can all indulge in this ideal appearance that is at least somewhat a product of our socialization in RL, further embedding it into our psyche?)

* Are you sensitive to the different social mores between SL and RL? (Are SL "players", being a self-selecting group rather than a truly representative random sample of the RL population, more likely to be less conservative in general?)

* Is it the audience? (Would/do you dress at adults-only events in RL the same way you do in SL in general?)

* Or is it a combination of the above, or something totally different?

Hmm, I almost just made a poll there. This is an essay question though, not multiple-choice :P

Another issue someone might want to address is the differences between "less conservative" and "less formal" and "more revealing".

For my part, a little part of each of those three factors contribute.

Currently, I dress kinda similarly.. Cargo pants and a t-shirt. Though IRL I don't wear a utility belt, shoulder harness, Bowie knife, or nifty leg-harness thing.

And I'm nowhere near as tall.

Or that relatively clean-shaven(fullish beard in RL opposed to simple goatee in SL).

Well.. Actually my aswer might be yes. I'm pretty much always clothed in SL as in RL, and I always wear pants in both occasions, as opposed to shorts.

Wait, what? Hi.

"Hey sailor! Missing home tonight?"

My style of dress varies as it does in RL, from suits to casual to paint-splattered jeans. But i definately get more goofy with clothes in SL than I ever would in RL.

I dress pretty casual in RL, Jeans or shorts and a tshirt or summery button up short sleeve shirt. Sandals in summer, one of my many sets of boots in winter. Sunglasses are a must if it's sunny, no matter what time of year. I do have some suits for business occasions, and a tux for formal occasions, but I always feel very physically uncomfy in them.

Comfort above all is my motto.

In SL I change non-stop. All dependant upon my mood.

One day I am a droid, the next a tiny badger, a monk, a goth, a Borg (no not Bjorn!), an evil clown, an Apollo astronaut, an Adonis, etc.

I dress less conservatively in SL, but I plan to correct it IRL.
