Who cheated and got a free account when they already had one?

I tried to make myself try to get a free account with my new debit card, I don't know what they were checking to see if you already have an account, which would render you ineligible. However, I just couldn't see any good reason to get another account, and the sheer joy of being bad didn't seem worth the effort, so I didn't even try.

Who did sneakily get a free second account, and why?

It must be nice to have RL friends playing the game with you.

Judging by my week however, I would say a lot of folks got free accounts just so they could sneak up on me and grief me!

I had three avatars I never saw before show up this week just to drop a bomb on me or or bump me around, then dissapear. Much more than was the case previous to the account giveaway.

:(

How come no-one ever uses a one-time acount to do something anonymous but *nice* to someone else? Why always is it more of a pie-in-the-face kind of thing?

Unfortunately the majority of Alts you hear about exist for the following reasons:

-a sexual themed alt ---- one who is looking for one night stands, or works as an escort, or is an alt of someone in an exclusive online relationship looking to fool around.

- a "spy" alt --- basically an alt being used to get information about a past lover or somehow else manipulate a past or present relationship.

- a griefer alt -- an alt who exists to cuase problems. Neg Rating attacks, Bombers, Shooters, pvp, forum trolling, whatever.

- a rules bender -- an alt that exists to do things that one person technically isnt supposed to do - Such as get the group bonus for their land, or buy more than one plot of first land. To farm stipends, get extra dwell points, whatever.

-----------------
Considering Secondlife is absolutely different then other games in that you have no skills, or set apearance - I can only really see a couple of legitamate reasons.

-you have such a busy business and/ or social life sometimes youd just like to have some peace and quiet. I imagine this Alt would only share their Real identity with close friends or maybe just their online paramour.

-you need an Alt for product tests or some other business reason that requires have 2 bodies.

Thanks Colette, :)

I have two alts myself, athough I hardly use them at all. I created them when all my newbie friends in the same area started doing it.

"Monkey see Monkey do" I guess. :)

The first one I created just to hang out in the welcome area and see what that was like cause I missed it the first time for the most part. That was an enlightening experience, although I felt terribly spy-like and dishonest. I ended up telling everyone I was an alt to get the guilt off. (I would like to make a public apology here to "Joey" and a couple of others I was never able to tell about this. )

The second one is a little girl, because sometimes you just dont want to be grown-up! But the whole "kid avatar" thing took a nosedive the second the tinies showed up. I think both "movements" share some of the same motivations.

I think both are "okay" uses of the alt, and a lot of folks have alts so they can form a group as well.

Apparently though, as I said, one big use of alts is to get back at people who you lose arguments to in the forum. How grown up is that?

At least that explanation seems likely to me this week.

;)

There used to be an expectation that forum commentary shouldn't carry over into inworld action. That seems to have gone by the wayside somewhere along the line.

I disagree. I doubt those are the majority reasons. I think the main reasons people have alts is for privacy (explore or work as an unknown and not be bothered) or to serve as a third member of a group. I think the majority of alts pretty much stay to themselves or lead seperate lives with a circle of friends different from their main account. I think its a minority that are up to no good with alts.

well third member of group would be a rules bender which i listed in majority

though you are probably right - a good deal of alts are probably for privacy from business and a far too busy social life.

I think that griefer alts may be a higher percentage of alts created though maybe not existing - since these alts are the ones gettind banned.

I should clarify that I have no actual proof of anything of the sort and make no such accusations.
Just a funny anecdote I thought, or a curious co-incidence relative to this thread about alts.

It does happen. Prok has banned me and about five or six other people he obviously thinks are my alts (not all of them are) from his mall adjacent to my property.

Seems a bit small minded. Never even met him in-world. Just lots of forum disagreement. I didn't reciprocate. He can travel across my land as he wishes, as can his alts.

Also seems a bit inconsiderate towards his mall tenants, and my non-alt friends (though none has yet noticed). Still, who cares, he can ban who he likes.

I saw no reason to bother forum with this triviality, but I saw you expressing an interest, wondering if it ever happened.........

My guess is it happens quite a lot. To prevent it is the main reason I created a couple of forum-alts. But one day I made a posting slip - and he had me :(

I understand what you mean, but in my experience I dont like trying to be two or more people and dont do it well. My alts are not really seperate personalities and I would never post to the forum as an alt.

Especially if the forum alts are used just to back up the central "personality," I find that kind of deceptive, and it certainly gives unfair advantage over those of us that can't be bothered.

I don't believe for one second that you are a pathological liar, you can't pull the wool over my eyes that easily. Besides, Schwanson has it pulled over his eyes anyway.

I only have "utility alts" that function as banks for my larger projects. I've never really felt the need to have one in world or in forum, mostly because I feel like it would dilute Ulrika.

Agreed. I only switched to Ellie, for instance, when Prok's pathological pursuit of me round the forum to spew bile on top of every single post I made as Lindar Lehane nearly drove me away. And have now stuck almost entirely with Ellie for ages. Muting was not enough to escape Prok and alts because everyone kept quoting him. Its true there is not much more revolting or dishonest than bolstering one alt with another. I've seen it done, and even in the same thread, and even engaging in pseudo dialogue. I won't say who it was, but...Yuk. And I stopped using my true in-game identity in the first place once I realised my main land was unfortunately bang adjacent to the same dangerous mega-troll. I judged him capable of in-world retribution, and was proved right. Good thing he's (almost) gone. He soiled my whole experience, despite my realisation that really he needed help.

It is sometimes interesting to hear about what people do with their alts and why they have them. If only because it is often secret or at least not talked about much.

Anyone compiling a history of SL will have to interview players after they leave the game to find out what they *really* did with their alts. From what I have heard, these can be some of the more interesting and entertaining SL stories.

It seems you have an unfair advantage. You may say all you wish about Prokofy but, of course, he is not here to put his side of the story. Prok is actually a friend of mine and I could, should I so wish, relate some of the things he has told me, but I decline to do so. So lets leave personalities out of this thread, shall we.

There is no reason why we shouldn't be able to talk about Prokofy whenever it suits us. Simply because a criminal is jail doesn't mean he and his crimes can't be discussed at the dinner table.

Although as long as you're offering suggestions on behavior, might I suggest that you give up your new job as a member of the thought police. Thanks. :)

There is no time limit for owning first land. One only need to upgrade for a month during which time, in addition to the weekly stipend, they would have received an initial amount of Lindens when joining the gane as well as an additional amount when upgrading. (I don't remember what these amounts were when I joined the game and they may well have changed or been even been eliminated since then.) If the first land is sold within a month, the alt is free to go basic. The financial benefit is certainly debatable and can hardly be described as a get rich quick scheme. But that it occurs seems to be considered common knowledge and the cost of doing it has been reduced by $10 during this promotion.

As I wrote this, it occured to me that with 1st Land a bit of a scarcity, the likelihood of incurring a 2nd monthly charge is increased. That's kind of funny.

Extract from forum rules:

Discipline
Be respectful. Please challenge opinions, state your own and enjoy the discussion, but do not cross the line into personal attacks and insults because you will risk having your Second Life account suspended or banned. We believe that in-world and forum behavior are linked and behavior carries across the boundary. This means if you are suspended or banned in-world you are also suspended or banned from the forums, and vice versa, if your account is suspended or banned from the SL Forums, it will also be suspended or banned from in-world.
