It's been brought to my attention that my web provider, stargateinc.com, doesn't have, shall we say, the best bandwidth int he world. I've gotten reports that my mp3s skip and stutter when there's only a few listeners in the 1.4 preview.

Soooo... does anyone have any good recommendations for web providers?

http://www.ipowerweb.com/

Might be worth looking into. As low at 6-7 a month with free domain reg. if you go for a year or longer. I think it's like 40 gb transfer/month too which seems pretty good considering the price.

I think http://www.ipowerweb.com/ is, from the two second research I did, but it depends a bit on what you need. (No I don't work for them lol)

Just jumped on their "live chat" to ask a question at 5 in the frikkin morning EST and someone answered my question in less than a minute. Pretty cool.

The guy was probably saying "OMG people really need to get a life...jumping on a web chat at 3am (assuming CA) to ask a stupid web hosting question??? What an idiot!!!"

Hmmm, the name is similar but I used powweb for 3 years and the one time I had a problem they got right back to me with support.
http://www.powweb.com/

They offer a lot of bang for the Buck!

and no, I don't work for them.

I still insist that ScenicNet is the absolute best in hosting, especially for MMOs. They have the best service ever, and they can help solve world hunger, cure cancer and AIDS, help you score as many guys/girls as you want, and enlarge your penis. And no, I do not not work for them.

Dawrin might as well work for scenic net. I have yet to see a really good deal come out of them but he has been pushing them for quite a while now.

I use ipowerweb for my account, and I set it up for 2 other accounts. It is fairly good but there are better ones out there. They don't affer shell access, if that is important to you, and limit you to 5 MySQL databases I think (or is it 3?). There are really no options to get more bandwith - they give you 40gigs and allow you to buy up to 5gigs extra at very expensive prices / gig. They give you like 800mb of disk space too, so it really isn't a bad deal.

I found some places I thought might be better, but I'm at work now so don't remember the names. I think I found one that had unlimited MySQL databases (limited only to stay within the size of your plan), and 1gb of storage and around 40 - 50gb transfer. I don't remember if they had shell access or not. Maybe I can find it on my computer at home tonight.

If you look carefully at what I said, you'll notice that I do, in fact, work for scenic net. But no worries! Big changes are coming soon, especially for MMOGs.

After researching for a year and a half, I found and still consider http://westhost.com to be the best hosting company out there right now. Just my opinion of course. :)

I'm looking mostly at bandwidth (GB/month), space, and price. Based on my ten second research, this one blows everything away:

http://www.powweb.com/

5GB per DAY = 150 GB/month or so (Compared to 40GB/month for the one I posted)

1000mb space (compared to 800 for mine)

Price is about the same...

Of course who knows, maybe they're able to offer this level of bandwidth because their upload speeds suck. lol.. I didn't notice anything about the type of connection they have...

LFChosting pissed me off because their crappy website didn't allow me to find the stats I wanted within 15 seconds, so they are disqualified. :p Westhost.com isn't very good in terms of the criteria I picked, but of course I haven't taken customer service or other factors into account. All depends on what your needs are...

Hmm...wait a sec.

PowWeb is really looking impressive based on what they're claiming...but..

They claim 7.77/month for a 3 month term, but say $43.31/3 months as well. The 7.77 rate is only good for the 2 year plan. :/ They need to correct their chart information.

But it still seems the better deal, if it's all true. How is the upload speed and other stuff Buck?

BTW Ama, if ipowerweb isn't the best out there, what's your pick?

www.nearlyfreespeech.net

$1 per $1gig. thats it. No per month - none of that. Database, DNS, e-mail forwarding.. etc.
$0.01/MB a month disk space.

Load balanced and colocated.

Service and support is really good too.

They rock! yep, I like it!

Well, I need a server that can handle a few SL connections streaming mp3s from it. My current plan seems to buckle violently if more than 2 people are listening to songs at the same time.

What're the download speeds like at ipowerweb or powweb?

i'm just sayin..

personally, i have two sites and have them both hosted with www.godaddy.com

..of course, one of my sites isn't anything more than a splash page that (basically) says that it's under construction.

but my other site has a bunch of stuff, including several flash presentations and an animation.. oh yeah, and the welcome page is a short flash as well.

..hmm, just went and looked at their plans.. their transfer rates are horrid! sure, you can have a $3.95/mo plan, but you only get 25MB storage and 1G/mo transfer!

..maybe i need to switch hosts?

If you are a developer and Microsoft whore like me, I have found discountasp.net to be excellent and very sophisticated and competitive in its offerings.
