Jin, just wanted you to know that the Lindens have said quite a lot about this subject. We have had this problem, and this discussion before. You can start with this thread and look farther back. /invalid_link.html and this one, /invalid_link.html

Like I said, the Lindens DO care.

think the reason why the age limit applies is that it involves the NDA. A child cannot legally sign (and be legally bound to) the NDA, so they can leak whatever info they want, and the fault applies only to the parents. On the other hand, if you are above 18, and violate the NDA, then they (Linden Labs, The investors of said company, and any other party related to SL, so on and so forth, lol) can sue you for everything you're worth, and then some. Parental permission sorta makes that null, but it's impossible to verify that, so they just say "no one under 18 allowed". Just fyi...

Wow, now I'm pretty new to SL, so don't take my experience or opions to mean anything.
Ok, I for one havn't seen any thing that younger audiences would find offensive.
The only reasonable proposition some one has made as to why the age restriction would be the one in context to the legality of the contracts we had to sign to beta test. (wow many big words, too much for Aiosa.)
But I've seen the issue of behavior in relation to maturity, now that brings something to mind. While any one can make aa point that a 16 year old can pass as a late twenties on the net, and we have 36 year olds who wack off to little kids as they stalk them pretending to be 12. Maturity has nothing to do with it, I'm a cartoonist, I (try to) make a livng off of creativity and a lack of will to ever have grown up. So of course on my first day on I went to a party and went on a shooting rampage. Thus, not a good impression. But to the poi nt if I could easily have passed as a quake obsessed highschooler, than would it not stand to reason that there are those among us who are/could be 16 and passing as 22 year olds, by showing some restraint and mature opinions.

While on the subject of mature of opionions, on these boards I see a wide flux in maturity (such as my posts in themselves) (did I use flux right?)... from the insanly childish to the well recieved.
Also, my cousin... he's like 15 now, we're close. Was telling me how (and I believe him just by the fact that this seems all too like him) he stumbled into some chatroom and got caught in the middle of some guys bashing the only homo in the room, he spent the night making point by point agienst the myths of homsexuality these guys were spouting out. All thw whiile leading people to believe he was 21, even then finding the opinions and ideas expressed to be pretty well supported for one of even that ficticious age. He has seemed to have made a career over the years of fabricating his age.

Now where am I going with this long winded post and bonus antidote (wrong word I know, but I can't think of the pelling or pronunciation of the right one, all I know is used to get it confused with this one.)?

No where! Just that rooting out the youth will be hard if not impossible. A witch hunt could ensue. Also other than isues of legallity how much could a younger group hurt the game, if you couldn't even tell?

Thats my..uh.. one, two, three.... uh buck fifty... I went way over the two cent limit. But hey, If you managed to read and retain this entire post, treat yourself to a cookie!

Thats the plan. Closed beta had been for 18+ although I'm not sure if thats the case anymore(?).

Gah, I know it's overstated, but there are so many people who are over 18 and act like they're 12... Half of the time I'm on SL I'm s***faced. I guarentee if I meet someone while I'm drunk they'll say, "What a little s***," and turn me in for being underage. The point to this little rant? Nothing, I'm just pounding it ever deeper into your head that sometimes people who are considered by society to be adults are somewhat immature, now I'm going to regret this because I just said that I act like a little s***...but...I'll post it anyways.

The only possible problem with making it so people under 18 can't go into mature sims, is that they may, someday, meet a wall of mature sims and they can't pass them to get to the PG sim on the other side.

Also, what's keeping the under 18 year-old from wandering to the edge of a M sim and watching or listening? I think it would be hard to make an entire sim invisiable to just some players.

Underage players will also whine and complain if an event that they want to go to is taking place in a M sim. They may just stand on the edge, and neg rate every person that goes in (That'll show them). Trust me, I'm in high school, I know how they work.

Finally, underage people lie about their age constantly. They do it to be "cool." Bah... I hate people like that. If people under 18 find out that they may miss out on part of SL, just because of their age, that will make them even more likely to lie about their ages. Credit cards can be "borrowed" from parents.

When you're underage, you hate the rules, when you become 18, you're glad they're there (Certain restrictions apply).

i would expect the lindens to have enough sense to not put all the M sims in a row across the world, unless they're at the end of the world ;)

simple. put an "over-18" flag on the accounts. if it's not set (for underage players), M-rated sims will refuse communication with the client. in effect, it will look to the client like that sim doesn't exist at all. over-18 people flying into the sim would just "disappear", and nothing in that sim would be visible. that's one advantage to having each sim on it's own server (if i'm not mistaken that they are indeed on their own servers) :)

that is up to the event holder's discretion. if the event is mature-themed, then it should be held in an M sim precisely to keep the under-18 demographic out. conversely, public events, like clothing contests, etc. should be held in PG sims, so everyone can attend.
