User moderation might be a possibility; find people who have a generally upstanding reputation, and limit them to just one forum, or one catagory.

Could we please, PLEASE, push the creation of the Land for the Landless forum to sooner rather than waiting for the other forum breakouts to be created and ready?
Think of it as saving a life... Those in my immediate vicinity would appreciate it greatly as their eardrums would stop ringing after hearing my scream in finding another mis-post in the "New in Second Life" forum. ![]() LL -- Saving Lifes Daily. _____________________

I just thought of something. By removing the LFTL -- Haney won't have any valid reason to lurk in the forums any longer. ![]() _____________________

Molecular Satyr has the right order. Put the general discussion groups higher.
Why is there General, Off-Topic, and Issues? It seems like these three forums all serve the same purpose. |

Trust me they don't serve the same purpose. off topic will go off on any tangent and shouldn't be in general..likewise issues should be kept and discussed seperately. Too bad there isn't a rant forum ...that was the shiznit. ![]() _____________________

I like the idea of putting the discussion forums first, and I also was thinking about changing the community forums to be notice boards -- expanding the classified sections, and moving some of the specialty forums like building into the discussion area.
As far as "issues" goes, I guess you could assume it's a replacement for rants. I was hoping, though, that 'issues' might encourage somewhat more positive discussions than 'rants'. _____________________

Keep forums for building, animations, and texturing. Just call the scripting forum "Scripting" (not mentioning tips) and move the vehicle scripting discussion inside it.
BTW thanks for running all this by us. ![]() _____________________

How about testing software prior to release - not previewing it and then having paying customers find the freaking bugs? You want that in positive terms. Fine. I would be extremely pleased to know that - via announcement in forum threads and discussions - both clietn and server software provided by and used by Linden Labs has been thoroughly tested before it was released onto my computer. I would be ecstatic to hear other consumers/customers of Linden Labs rave about how - tho at first buggy as hell - the software about to be released "tomorrow"/"real soon now"/"a week from today" is truly ready for me and my computer. My heart would go pittypat pittypat after clicking on "View new posts" in the forums and finding "It's Ready!" as a thread started by someone other than a Linden. How about that for an "issue"? You think it is a rant instead? In my world, restricted as some might think it is, in my world, customer service and product testing are hand-in-hand considerations, not after thoughts. That, my friend is a rant... wait, no.. .that is a simple TRUTH. |

Actually, what should have happened is LL should have shut down the main grid for 12 hours and FORCED people to join the Preview so that the bugs COULD have been found. Programmers suffer from a nasty habit called "knowing how things are supposed to work" so they don't go out and try things that aren't supposed to work. It's why beta testers are needed. Now back to the original topic of this thread. Want to rant about LL more, make a thread about it. _____________________

If the Lindens had wanted people to test the preview, they would have had it open longer. Normally, I spend quite a bit of time in the preview trying to break things, but this time, the preview period was so short that the only thing I had time for was testing to make sure the two vehicles I put on sale today wouldn't break.

Robin,
<<I was hoping, though, that 'issues' might encourage somewhat more positive discussions than 'rants'.>> It's nice to come across people who still manage to maintain an optimistic view of life. ![]() I think an issue that does need to be addressed is your own (meaning the Linden's own) attitude to the inevitable flaming and unpleasantness. Do you believe in free speech, or are you so concerned about the way the forums will colour potential customers' view of second life that you are prepared to take a more draconian attitude? If the former, then I think there are only a few reasons why a posting should ever be deleted. If it is hate speech, or if it reveals rl information, or if it is illegal under American law. IMV nothing else should be censored. It is infuriating when a reasoned post is removed because a Linden can't distinguish between linguistics and obscenity, or when a thread which has been full of unreasonable personal attacks stabilizes into a reasonable discussion and is then deleted. It is not very nice having a post deleted; when it has happened to me I feel that I have been the victim of aggression. I have found that when people behave in an unreasonable way on the forums and attack someone else in an unfair way, I tend to think less of the attacker rather than the person who is attacked. Ad hominem attacks are like a gun with a blocked barrel - they harm the perpetrator rather than the intended victim. By leaving well alone you give other people the chance to redress the balance, and that is something that always seems to happen, even with the most unpromising of threads. Promoting freedom of speech means that you have to allow things that you, personally, dislike very much. In my view it is worth it, because unfettered discussion is always better than censorship, which, when it comes down to it, is a tool of totalitarianism. Anyway, many thanks for listening to us. By doing so you are showing yourselves sensitive to the needs of existing residents, which bodes well for the continuing improvement of second life. _____________________

Three suggestions:
- Keep those names as you have them above, do NOT change them to anything resembling the current names. ![]() - Move all Off-Topic threads out of General and into Off-Topic, or make the current General the new Off-Topic. My reason for wanting one of the above is that if you allow the Off-Topic forums that exist now, to be in the new General, more than likely those threads will be bumped and General will still remain a largely Off-Topic forum and we'll be back to what we were a couple months ago or where we are right now. - Along with the above, some more Moderators for the forums would be nice. I like Adam's suggestion. You could also have "Forum Liaisons", allow people with clean(or practicly clean) forum slates who haven't been reported, and who generaly seem to be sane of mind, apply for a position of Forum Liaison. As great as you guys currently are, there are sometimes posts go unmoderated for different reasons (a Linden isn't on at that time, users don't report them, etc). _____________________

While you're working on the forums, please turn off the nasty feature that marks all threads in all forums as read after a certain timeout.
Also, the icons you're using now were made for a white background and don't look so good with the dark grey one - you may want to replace the icon set or use a better matching background color. _____________________
