Neg rating spammers

Hello,

I have been neg-rating the spammers who send out those IM's to the whole world asking for ten bucks. I do this cause spam really bugs me and I think this is a relatively new thing, so there might be the opportunity ot nip it in the bud sort of speak if everyone does it.

Am I wrong?
Does anyone else do this?

It's trivialy easy to do and if a spammer sent out a hundred messages and got a hundred neg rates back, I think the idea of doing this sort of thing might never get popular.

Or perhpas I am over-reacting?

I notice it's making my profile look like I am *the* most judgemental person in the world considering all the pos rates I hand out as well.

I just close the IM and go about my business. Not worth the effort or L$.

I don't think you're wrong for neg-rating, but I wouldn't waste the $75L m'self.

Thankfully, I haven't received any of the spam, *knocks on wood* but that's incredibly tacky.

heh - everyone in the Sheter got hit with that message about a week ago.

Which is rather humorous, considering most of the folks that hang out with us are newbies without a lot of cash.

When it happened last week, we all had a lively discussion on what to do next. Neg Rating was quickly discounted because that's well..... expensive

Not to mention, I've never neg rated anyone before - and wasn't about to start.


So instead, we all sent him notecards. Lots, and Lots of notecards.

Good to hear I wasn't the only one that got this! *grin* I was wondering about that last night, when I got the random, help me upload textures give me 100L or anything you have please.

I probably wouldn't neg rate either, why waste the 25 to 75L?

they did it more than once to me, then I'd seriously consider it

Yeah, the one I got last night was for $100 for uploading textures. I told him I'd get back to him in a bit. Later, I remembered it was still waiting there, and he said he needed money to upload textures, or anything I could give him, so I offered to give him some of the free textures I've collected.

He didn't respond. I suppose he had specific textures he had already collected himself that he wanted to upload.

Well I am not doing the triple neg because being a jerk is not the same thing as being bad builder.
You only have to go to the sandbox to see that.

It's really just 25 bucks and a trip to their house or something they built to rate them.

I got this spam yesterday, the "can I have 100L to upload textures?"

I told the guy I was broke because I just donated my last 10L to helping the homeless people in SL so they could eat.

He never replied *shrugs*

True. You can tell how often I rate from not knowing how much it costs.

My suggestion... Each time you get a spam for this kind of thing, get everyone you know to spam them back with requests for $25L each so you can neg rate them.

Well yeah I started doing it cause it happened so much.
I have neg rated twice now and I think I waited until the third or fourth time before I did it.

Yes. These new "criminal" gangs and "mafia" type families are sooo childish IMO.

I think their mothers should keep better track of their credit cards, or send them to bed without supper or something.

That is kinda why I posted, it is actually making me feel bad a bit to do it.

Hey everyone, please give me ten linden so I can upload the textures to make my parthenon complete.

Alms for the poor!

Being a trusting sort of person, I gave this avatar 100 lindens for his alleged texture upload yesterday. It wasn't until my alt was hit with exactly the same request this morning that I realised it was a scam.

As other people have said. any repsonse other than dropping the money is ignored.

haha makes me chuckle when I get those things too my reply to 'dunt cross us dewd' is usually along the line of 'Bring it on..'

I have a whole directory of asshatery I don't bring out too often -- but sometimes you gotta let people know they shouldn't bark like a dog when they piss like puppies

I don't think you're overreacting at all - and seeing how your rating 'behavior' - I think you're using the tools as they are intended... you find that behaviour undesirable, and letting them know...

Groups I tend to handle a little differently - you can expect a certain amount of chat on any group channel.. if a group gets too 'spammy' I just leave it.. if I'm asked why I left I let them know (politely) that I find excessive group chat annoying and distracting while I'm trying to build or script..

When people ask for money - I usually direct them to Chip Midnight's place.. I tell them about the 'Chip Midnight Mystical Adoration Prayer Rug' he has there, and if they 'worship' on it, it will give them free money.

What I don't tell them is that it only gives out 1$ per 2 minutes or so of worship (I knows this coz I made the rug)

So if they feel like worshipping Chip for 200 minutes, they can upload to their hearts content..

Hmm this does give me an idea.. maybe I should do up some scripts/animations to allow people to become 'human furniture'... pay them a few bucks for every minute, but they have to provide a service to collect it... and lets face it, AV's taking up no prims, its the ultimate in low prim building!

I got the im from this avie too asking for money to upload textures.I cant believe the nerve and audacity of some people and the fact that they think everyone here is so stupid and gullible. Although I didnt give this stranger any money, I did create a texture for him and dropped it in his inventory, but somehow I dont think he's gonna like it too much.

This might be an "otherwise transmit" spam or "any other form of solicitation".

Several hundred abuse reports from non-affiliated people might induce action on the Linden's part.

More importantly -- how it is suddenly possible to send this spam to large groups of people? Or am I misunderstanding this? Is this one person just randomly spitting IMs to those in the area... or someone has managed to script something using... oh... the key database? -curious look-
