Tactics of the Smarmy Land Barons!

Apropos of many 'smarmy' Baron topics, I've compiled with the help of my associate a definitive list of decrepit Baron trickery!!

Transcribed below for your reading pleasure!!

From: someone

1. Land Barons use horrifyingly ugly builds to lower value in surrounding areas. If you think that someone couldn't be so dense as to put up a terrible build in the middle of a nice area, that isn't because they can't build it is most deliberate.

2. Commonly a Land Baron will buy land in the middle of some parcels, set up something horrible upon it. However this land will be set for sale so the surrounding suffering citizens have no choice but to buy this land to remove the eyesore. (Slightly opposite of the earlier tactic where this is to only fragment and exploit a situation versus achieve a lower buy price.)

3. A nasty trick on Linden Lab is to bid in auctions, but use a credit card that has a restricted limit so the sale cannot be put through. Most large barons use this tactic heavily.

4. Some will sneakily use alt accounts to raise land value inflating the apparent price for their gain. (Through apparent purchase and repurchases.) This is the same as real life land fraud, or ebay 'shill' tactics in auctions.

5. Newbie scamming where a baron will approach a new user and offer them rock bottom money for a plot that can be sold easily at a higher multiplier. "Hey newbie, sell me your land for $3L per meter! Its more than the others will pay you!"

6. Competition delay tactics, asking people to hold land "While they are raising money" so then they can sell other parcels at higher prices, since they have eliminated the competition holding on a potential "Sale" on the other land. Very wiley indeed!

7. Some enterprising Barons will use lights instead of builds to maximize an ugly effect for either tactic listed (one or two on the list). Never discount the effect of lights on surrounding land and other builds!! Truly ugly!!

My my!!!

Such a list, so many motives and tricks! I suggest you use this as a laundry list to compile against your favorite 'smarmy' Baron! You may recognize the truth behind their actions, and by doing so, you warm my heart as surely as selling overpriced land to a newcomer!!!

*chortles and runs a new copy off of the presses -- time to drop these off at the market!!*

these people are land brokers. barons don't sell land, they own it. they let people live and work on their land for share fees, or dare we call them taxes, but they never sell the land. it's an inheritance.

Lordfly,

Apart from 'apropos of' and the multiple exclamation marks, Land Baron's posting is written in fairly good English. I would have thought that instantly ruled out the first two of your suspects.

There is nothing wrong with "apropos of".
The french say "a propos de", and we portuguese say "a proposito de" as well. It never ceases to amaze me how the things we use in our daily lives are so fancy and obscure in the english language... I guess it just makes it that much easier to seem "educated" =)

The English don't say "apropos of" because they would either need to admit to using foreign pronounciation, or say it "Ay-Prop-Oz Ov" which is just silly. ;)

Eggy,

We mangle lots of foreign phrases. Even 'ignorami' is now a common usage in English.

And on a related note, I've never understood why "alternative" is not pronounced like "alter native" ;) *looks all confuzed*

I'll leave this for the intelligentsia and cognesceti to figure out. :D

I've tried double clicking an area on the map before and not being able to teleport there because it's over 1000m from a telehub.

Hmmm... try teleporting to Yawgoo. When I do, I always have a 1500m flight to get there.

WhatyoutalkingboutWillis?

There are loadsa places on the map that are more than 1000m from the telehubs o.O

Even more completely f*cking annoying, there are places on the map where you double click to go there and it sends you to a telehub with absolutely NO access to the damned sim you're trying to get to.

Very annoying when that happens. Especially when you've got a high chance of dying trying to teleport.

Teleporting to Shona since they put in the new Sims, is um.... interesting...

Actually, Lisse, Shona was the one I was thinking of as an example of both my points :)

If you click on it or select it from the dropdown, you end up across the river with no access. The nearest telehub to Shona that actually gives you access to it is well in excess of 1km away.
