My Japanese is terrible...I studied it for six months from a teacher that spoke no English (but her Chinese was pretty good). I got a good handle on the grammar, and can sort of piece together what people are saying now and again in Kurosawa movies (but that might be because I've seen those movies so many times!).

So apropos of nothing in particular...

I always loved finding US Military phrase books in the countries I've traveled through. In Thailand there was one that offered such helpful sentences as...

"Come out with your hands up, we have you surrounded!"
"Get that water buffalo off of the road now!"
"Where are the weapons in this village?"

and my favorite...

"I'm sorry I have torn your gown. I will buy you a new one."
