Yes, Katja, it is nice that you don't HAVE to do anything. You don't have to buy food, or level up, or any of that stuff.

Cybin, I'm here for the politics, also, apparently, but not by choice.

I don't know about communities or like minded goals or whatever... but to put it simply u are a part of my little world because u left a major mark in it. I don't think we had anything at all in common except that we enjoyed each other's company. U were and still are an amazing builder, scriptor and the most fun person i ever met.

Aww. Well, Misty, I'm definitely not saying I don't have friends I care for deeply here. I do. Like I have some close friends in my neighborhood but dont know the other 99%. So I don't feel like part of a large community - just blessed to have a few really good friends :)

Sometimes the things that we find ourselves doing/called to do are not the things we'd choose eh? ;)

Interesting statements/questions, Jeffrey.

Personally, I have never seen or imagined anything like SL. It is my first experience with a virtual world. I find myself doing the same things I do in rl--teaching, writing, haunting the same spots, running my mouth, etc.

What makes SL a community? Nothing. There is a rift running right down the middle of the 'content creator/consumer' dichotomy. What makes SL special? It is low-hazard space for pure creativity (creativity, in my mind, is the same thing as play).

Developers, graphic artists, techies with a penchant for the absurd, singers, intellectuals--we can all play with little social or economic consequence(OK, some of us are paying out the wazoo).

Got an idea? Give her a spin! She flops? Who cares?

I can let my mind play here. Potentially, I can help others. Without a doubt, I can help myself.

another thought..

i forgot to mention an observation i was pondering.

the splintering of the original singular community feeling to the multiple communities within SL was really quite a natrual growth. our current existance is more in tune with an alternate world than our original small community feeling.

simply, the younger SL had a limited amount of residents.. which means not many to make things to buy and not many to buy them.. a world in which many times the line between creator and buyer was blurred.
when the populace became engorged past the "small community" zenith, we no longer needed to play dual roles of creator/consumer. now we can support a world in which there are plenty of options available to someone who doesn't wish to do anything except for taking up residence in SL... or shop-a-holics. ;)

-

and yeah, whether you're here for politics or not, most of us end up in the thick of it at some point or another; however, it's not really a bad thing.. it's actually quite enjoyable usually.

-

and let's not forget the essential role of... THE ASSHAT!! :D ..it's not SL without 'em.

I've been saying this for some time now. Glad to know someone finally agrees with me. :)

Thanks for the great responses. Remind me to start threads like this more often.

Well, maybe not.

A number of people have pointed this out or something like it over the last several months. The debate has been over what to do about it, if anything.

A lot of people have pointed this out on these forums over the last several months. The debate has been over what to do about the loss of a sense of a single, unified community, or if there's a need to do anything.

You mention "supporting" this new world. What do you mean by "support"? and how?
