Why don't we make a new rule where you can be "married" in SL (NOT IT RL). The female can have his/her last name changed if she wishes, and you can share costs, taxes and so on...

what do you think?

Like the idea, but there's a bit of a flaw with your proposal...

It isn't always the female that changes their last name. Furthermore, your proposal wouldn't work in same-sex marriages, if both parties were male. Just something to think about. :)

EDIT: Oops, sorry, I think you'd already thought of that (you said his/her last name, but said 'the female can...', must have been a typo :) )

Your first and last name together create your unique SL name... I doubt LL would change last names because:

-someone could already have that name;
-the possible problems that arise from changing the last name (changes to everything your name is linked to on the servers);
-and it would be an easy way for someone to get a well-known and respected last name that has been retired (see /120/50/2921/1.html ).

It would be nice, but I doubt that it is feasible.

I wouldn't want to share taxes and costs with Ama, anyway... I would quickly fall into debt. :D

How about:

If two AVs get married they can apply for a marriage license from the Lindens... this would allow them to add a tiny "wedding ring" icon to the end of their names.

Little symbol icons at the end of names (like emoticons) could be sold, awarded, given by the Lindens for many other reasons.

That's a really cute idea, Sinatra... (:

It would be neat if the icon/symbol could be unique to that couple so no one thinks a group of married couples were involved in one united mass wedding orgy... (;

Ah yes, thank you!

I like the wedding ring idea or something like it. Alek, your right about that, that never occured to me :D Heh I also like the unique thing. Same-sex marraiges I have no problem with, but multi-person marraiges? :D

Why not have the lastname hyphenated? If someone with the last name Curie were to marry me, their name would be Molly Curie-Miller. :)

Divorces could be messy. Who gets the house, car? Custody of the prims? Avatalimony?

Just live in sin it's so easy.

Please dear God no!

One thing I love to do in this game is do somthing I've never done before. Marriage is one of the very few I refuse to do. But if it entailed tax deductions and whatnot, I might be forced into it! o.O NOOOooooooo I don't want this idea! :p

Dave just because others can get married and be recognized as so does not mean that you would have to LOL.

Unless of course you become the only one not married and then we'd just have to persecute you for being wierd ;-) j/k

P.S. Hippos look darn good in Judge Judy wigs!

Now the Hyphen thing is a good idea but here is the problem.....

We all Know Lynnix Muse and I are married..

If she should have her name read....Lynnix Omega - Muse

How could people that don't know, determine that she is not married to Ama or Christopher Omega or any other Omega lol

(Sorry Ama and Christopher you were just the top off the brain names atm. lol)

We could all be put on Jerry Springer fast if that didn't get resolved lol.

Most everyone that knows me, knows that Linkin and I are together. Mostly because when we are both on line, we are not far apart. We signed up at the same time, so we came in with the same last name.
While in game, we spend time with a friend who created the Slate Household group. He created this group, to help the poor newies that were, learn how to build things, have accecss with granted permission, to the group to modify and move things in our role play household.
He is not a Slate so he has become my little brother so to speak.
The titles he created are Mr. Mr. And Mrs. I have walked around with Linkin, with the word MRS. over my head and Linkin standing beside me, yet we still get asked if we are a couple. I have been asked on a "date " in front of LInkin. Been proposed to in front of Linkin.
We share a house, we have even had a newbie come to the house and while chatting with us, kept asking Linkin if he and I were together.
Putting it in our profiles, helps when ppl take the time to actually read them (we learned this from TSO).
I guess what my point to this rambeling is even with the same last name and the words Mr. & Mrs. showing above our heads, ppl are still not getting it, so it doesn't matter if you have the same last name or not.

Hey guys. I know I am not supposed to talk about this in the forums because it bugs our right-wingers out there. I also know I am accused of wearing my orientation on my sleeve …but HEY how come its girl marries guy. Please don’t tell me we are going to have to make a new sim and call it Vermont. Ya know there are a few of us gay folks in SL, and all though I am happily married out here (Linda is reading over my shoulder had to toss that in) I don’t see why same sex couples can’t be hitched in SL.

Noone said they couldn't Thai, i think you are reading way too much into it. IT was mentioned at the beginning about same sex marriages even i think if i remember correctly. Most people will use pronouns that relate to them, so if most of the people who have posted are straight then they will use guy and girl, just like most men will use he and most women will use she. Its natural, deal with it, i don't want to have to write in every posting he/she/it/alien/freak/whatever, i just use he when talking about something because that is what is most comfortable to me.

Normally i have stayed out of your little fights even though i usually disagree with you, but your little comment about rightwingers really pissed me off. Sorry but from what I see your just another i'm better than you liberal. Liberals are supposed to be about tolerance yet you don't tolerate what I am. Yes I am a rightwinger, but I have never discriminated, put down, insulted, or in any other way hurt somebody for their beliefs. I have my beliefs and they can have theirs, but the problem i find with most (wait for it i'm gonna use the reverse of theword you used with just as much nasty baggage attached) LEFTWINGERS is that they will not allow me to have mine, they are right or noone is, so much for tolerance... huh...

Don't make an issue out of non-issues, nothing upsets people more, SL is supposed to be a second world, leave the marching at home please.

look at that, samesex marriages were thought of and not rejected, perhaps someone should learn to read a whole thread before making accusations.

Yeah, Darwin... I guess the best current way to differentiate married couples is to have matching/paired items on your AV. (:

...and Charlie, you can't have Ama... he's MINE! (;

Thai, I don't believe any of my replies focused on heterosexual marriages...

They could wear matching Tees's. My mom & dad used to square dance and when the men wore shirts matching the wife's skirt my mom called them "Mother & son" outfits LOL. Maybe someone could start a new line of clothes. Mother & son, Mother & daughter, Father & son. I want a percentage please for my idea.

All joking aside, I wish the best to all the happy couples!!! It is interesting to read about SL relationships. I understand too that there are quite a few RL couples here too.

More stories please!

Thai, no one is descriminating against you. And by the way, I am a member of the Green party and I STILL found your rightwing remark offensive. Please don't do that. Thank you.

Well, how about taking this out of an emotional/political context and just focus on the technical details of the changes we would like made rather than getting hung up on RL debates over marriage and alternate lifestyles. Nothing that SL will do will come anywhere near being a "legal" marriage. Calling it "marriage" might get a bit uncomfortable if the players are underage. Will they have a honeymoon? and what will it consist of?

Technically what is being discussed here is more control over our names (I have a separate request in for nicknames to replace the one person groups that were being used for that) and maybe that concept should be extended to include some formal process for changing both our first and last names as well.

Group/couple ownership of property and bank accounts is also a good feature concept, and I think that has been requested already as well.

As far as I'm concerned there is no need in SL for any special designations of people as black, white, married, single, gay, straight, liberal, or right wing for that matter. If we focus on the technical aspects of what we are dealing with (names, money, property) the conversation will move along a lot faster. Attaching labels to things just slows the process of communicating down, or more likely, stops it altogether.

Oddly enough I think that is true in real life as well.
