Wal-Mart began it's life as a dry goods and sundries retailer. Super Wal-Marts offer groceries, as well.

By the way, why is it so suprising to you that Americans can readily buy firearms? It is a pretty major tenet of our Constitution, and is intended as one of the ways by which we "balance the powers" and ward off tyrrany. Granted, a lot of those guns get stolen and make their way into the black markets, but gun ownership is not the issue here. The issue is using this tragedy as an excuse to behave badly.

Gun ownership is not the issue? Hmmm... tell that to the hospital staff getting fired on by snipers.

This is a specious argument. I am not a gun owner, but the vast majority of gun owners are decent, law-abiding people.

Remember that many of the local jails around NO were adversely affected, and that many of those criminals are now running loose. You don't think THAT has more to do with it? Isn't it still a crime to steal guns from a Wal-Mart during a natural disaster? Sheesh, shoot the messenger.

For the record not all Wal-marts sell food. Super Wal-marts do...In those situations go to thier secondary mass purchasing store Sam's. Don't think Sam's sels guns...just beer.

All Wal-Marts do sell food. Why just the other day I went in there and bought me a 6-pack, a bag of hershey kisses, and a health bar, cuz I'm watching my weight. Oh and flip flops.

Seriously, though. I was discussing this with someone today and they were pretty unsympathetic to why morals of some people leave them in a crisis like this. I can see why people are behaving this way, but I'd never condone it. But who's to say if it was me in their shoes and I just saw my house, my family, my life being washed away, would I still have the presence of mind to behave with civility. I don't know. That's why I feel terrible for everyone in that situation now. Some are handling it way better than I ever would.

P.S. Be safe, Arbel! :)

During the floods of the Trinity river basin back in 1980's, thousands of people were in the same situation, most so poor they can't pay attention yet there was no mass looting, no roving gangs of thugs. There is no excuse for what is going on there. Period.

My personal opinion on the looting going on... I can completely understand why stores are being looted. People are left with nothing. My brother and his wife went into a Wal-Mart near them that had been looted. They got food, what water was left, batteries and a battery powered radio so they could hear the news. Honestly, I wouldn't have blamed them one bit if they'd walked out with a few digital cameras and other small items to try and sell once they make it out of New Orleans.

What I don't understand is what people are actually stealing. My brother said someone there at the Wal-Mart was lugging out a ceiling fan. A ceiling fan!? What the hell was he planning to do with it? If you're going to steal, at least be practical.

As for the thugs randomly shooting people, raping, firing on evac helicoptors... I don't give a shit how poor you are, it's unexcusable. Especially when the people you're raping and shooting are in the same dire straights you are.

Maybe what they didn't see were the 90 other ceiling fans that that guy had stolen so he could construct a vehicle to allow him to fly away.

Okay, that made me laugh out loud. I'm going to pass that on to my brother when I call him in a few minutes.

Thank you for some much needed levity. :D
