Hundreds of Boy Scouts fall ill from heat at Jamboree BOWLING GREEN, Va. (AP) — The Boy Scouts marched onto the field singing, plopping down in the grass to wait for President Bush. But hours later, the news that Bush couldn't make it was drowned out by sirens and shouts as hundreds fell ill because of the blistering heat. .... http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-07-28-scouts-jamboree_x.htm?csp=24&RM_Exclude=Juno

This week was unbelievably hot in the DC/MD/VA reigon. Up until today (friday), we have had dangerously high heat and humidity. Also, wednesday evening, a strong storm passed through and knocked out power to some 50,000 households. I got to sit in the dark with no A/C for 6 hours. This week was not the best week to put 40,000 Boy Scouts in tents up on Fort AP Hill.

Yeah. It's a sign the resident in chief doesn't bother to care about children waiting patiently in blistering heat to help with a much needed photo-op.

From: Kendra Bancroft Yeah. It's a sign the resident in chief doesn't bother to care about children waiting patiently in blistering heat to help with a much needed photo-op. Why much needed? I mean, I know the boy scouts are in trouble because they are too conservative and anti-gay, but I'm not sure what other issues they are facing. But I know for me it doesn't paint him in a better light to be seen with that organization.

I am probably going to be pilloried for this, but here goes:
These are F***ING BOY SCOUTS! They have merit badges for being in the wilderness and stuff like that. Their leaders should know not to assemble a structure in a lighting storm and those scouts should have known to stay hydrated in that kind of heat.
I won't even go into the administration's paranoia that requires that they be so security crazy about a group that supports them. Made those kids stand in the sun for hours.

It happened again! FRESNO, California (AP) -- Lightning struck a group of Boy Scouts taking shelter from a storm, killing the troop leader and leaving a 13-year-old boy brain-dead in the latest tragedy to befall the organization this week, authorities and the teen's grandfather said. Six others were injured when the lightning bolt made a direct strike on a tarp the Scouts had set up in a meadow in Sequoia National Park on Thursday. .... http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/07/29/scouts.lightning.ap/index.html

-Waves From what I've seen, it's usually the Adult Heterosexual who is teaching little boys how to wash themselves. (If you meant that to be a snide remark towards molestation). Oh and by the way, if you're 7 years old, it's the cub scouts. You have to be 10 or older to be in the Boy Scouts.

Yes, that is pitiful about the lightening. My girls are 15 and 18 now, and during their experience with Girl Scouts (I was a Brownie leader for five years), and in all their sporting activities - swimming, hockey, softball - I have noticed that the parents/leaders/coaches who take weather and lightening seriously are far outnumbered by the idiots who don't. coco

It is my humble opinion that the percentage of idiots in this world is growing, exponentially as the idiot parents are raising idiot children.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050731/ap_on_re_us/jamboree Article discussing all the things that went wrong at the jamboree. The Boy Scout official response of "I don't think it's wise to make judgment on things that could've, should've, would've been done," is shameful. It also shows that I need to read more, as my post above says that the scout leaders were killed by lightning, when they were actually electrocuted when the tent pole they were helping to erect fell and hit power lines.

It was actually two different incidents. The electrocution was at the Jamboree in Virginia. The lightning strike was in California.

From: someone At the last jamboree four years ago, Bush's trip was also canceled because of bad weather, in which lightning strikes caused minor injuries to two Scouts. He spoke to the group a day later by videotape. It happened again o.o cept this time the Boy Scouts had to suffer in the heat while waiting for somone thats not going to show up. What a terrible thing to go thru especially after what happened to their leaders. And some even had to watch them burn to death This is just terrible.

Seems to me the training for the Boy Scouts is slacking off, they should have known better than to wait in the heat like they did

But I know for me it doesn't paint him in a better light to be seen with that organization. I was being sarcastic and referring to Bush's need for a photo-op in light of his sagging popularity.

While I disagree with certain policy positions of the Boy Scouts, I am saddened by their recent losses. My heart goes out to the families and troops coping with these tragedies.
