A Special announcement to all business owners.

It is with great pleasure I wish to announce the formation of the
Second Life Business Name registry.
The registry will serve only as a point of reference and not serve as an arbitrator.
The Registry will record the name of the business, the day the business started, (proof may be required) and one person’s name delegated to the business name.
The records will be posted on a web page for public viewing.
The cost to register is a one-time fee of 300L$
This fee covers administration costs.
I will be checking the names on a regular basis and ensuring the list is up to date and accurate.
Participation is voluntary but of course recommended.
With the growing number of businesses cropping up in second life there needs to be a way to protect your business name and allow a point of reference for those starting a new venture.
Anyone interested in registering please contact Jill Mackenzie in game.
Thanks to all.

If I have proof... what do I need a registry for?

How do I prove the date of founding for a business that predates the registry?

Since you've already been cross-posting the last few minutes, this thread should be locked, moved, or deleted.

You've posted in "Special Attraction" at 8:23p, "Services" at 8:25pm, and now "General" at 8:33p. You found the correct spot on your second try.

Hi and thanks for the response.
I realize proof of an exact date is not such a simple thing to do. But most business owners have at some point rented space from someone. Proof would simply mean a confirmation of the approximate time the business was started. The reason for this being if there are 2 names the same the first name would be recognized.

As far as cross posting... I don’t post often and this is the first time I have heard of such a thing. So I apologize... I will make every effort to post in one area... thanks

I launched my business in the same parcel I've owned for the last year. I only began renting much later. Besides, what's to stop me getting a friend to pretend to be a landlord and say I started my business two years ago?

I, too, have never rented, anywhere.

That having been said, someone would look pretty silly if they tried to use "Reitsuki Kojima Designs" as their brand name...

I really can't see this being a trusted source of info unless it's run by LL. Let's face it, this is a business in its own right, and you're asking people to trust information from a business that is younger than those you propose to list. Sorry Jill :(

I've been using Little Rebel since I first started making t-shirts over a year ago. I'm the only person that makes anything for the original Little Rebel.

Consider this my free registration. ;)

I'm going to have to agree. I think a free wiki would serve the same purpose more effectively (and cheaply). In any case, I believe the United States Patent and Trademark Office to be a superior choice if you truly need to protect your marks in SL.

I honestly don't think this is a bad idea, but there should be a website to go with it.

Also, there are all sorts of other details that need to be ironed out.

I just registered Luxe Brand!

My friend wALT Altman vouched for the fact that I started this business WAY BEFORE LO JACOBS AND LORA MORGAN.

Lo: Give me a billion lindens immediately or this business name sleeps with the fishes.

Should I register my business name with you (which is unlikely since my business name is my name), what services do you offer to justify my L$300 fee? Should I suddenly find myself fighting with Rdith Mifflin for control of my invaluable (read: worthless) trade name, what will you do to support my claim?

I think this is a good idea and could be really useful as the world grows. It would be a handy tool for people to use when they're trying to come up with a name for a new business to make sure they don't duplicate a name someone is already using.

Anything with "Lash" in it could be me. I drew a blank trying to name the store. So it varies from The Lash Boutique, The Lashed Boutique, Lashed Boutique, and Lashed. Pretty soon, it'll be Las-las, which's funny just to me. If I could just put up a symbol, I would. Oh wait, I have. :p

(Edited: removed blah, blah)

Seriously, though, registering one's business might become a necessity with so many new people coming up and new designers selling. Newer folks won't remember the days when there was just one business over the otherr. And there already have been disputes about folks having business names similar to other residents.

(edited to remove needless rant)

Sorry, the one day I post, it's on a frickin soapbox. I've never been in this situation, just overly empathetic today. :o

You know what is funny, there is actually a "Lux Designs."

I'm fairly sure I had "Luxe" first, but we coexist rather nicely, in that we haven't bothered each other about it yet.

This is ok.

Last winter, I struggled for a couple of weeks to come up with a name for the business that my then partner and I had formed.

Originally, we were "Moonstruck", but, when we started to sell other things beyond just women's clothing, we needed a new name.

I thought long and hard about it, and decided on "Sleek". We liked the sound of it, and it had "SL" in the name. Imagine my surprise when, a few weeks later, I happened upon another "Sleek"!

I have no idea who picked it first, and it doesn't matter now, as the business is defunct, but, it would have been nice to have a registry like this to check first before choosing the name. Note: I did do a "Find All" search in game on "Sleek", as well as a forum search, they both came up empty.

I think this is a great idea, and I intend to use it when I start another business in the near future, both to check to see if the name I pick is being used, and to list mine! :)

First, I would definitely have a website that people can refer to. Second, I would set up a way for people to register on the website. Third, I would have a FAQ that folks can easily check up on (maybe a wiki would be nice? I don't know).

I don't know the details about your registry, and I am hesitant to sign up before I find out more about it. I know I can easily IM you about it, but having a reference point would be extremely helpful instead of trying to remember what you've told me.

Your $300 fee is not bad, but I don't think you have provided us with enough information on the surface.

Great idea. If you see this getting off the ground, please contact me.
There is definite potential for data collaboration with the search engine I'm developing.
