LSL starts with an ugly but powerful language as it's base, then strips off the power and leaves the ugliness. Have you used other game engines? I wouldn't call LL weak or ugly. UnrealScript... now that's ugly... Not having a dockable editing pane that can stay up and let the world be displayed in the part of the screen remaining instead of having the world partially blocked by the editor window. What do you mean? Not having the LSL wiki incorporated into the help system. Just a few weeks until HTML in world. Using "ll" in front of everything instead of just llTaking llThe llCommonNames llFor llThe llLanguage's llUse llAnd llLetting llThose llWho llDefine llFunctions llThat llCouldUse llSimilarNames llDeal llWith llIt llWhen llThey llNeed ll2 llInstead llOf llMaking llUs llSee llThe llLetters llLL llSo llFreaking llMany llTimes llIt llMakes llYou llWanna llPuke. I think this was a great design decision. It lets those who are unfamiliar with programming understand the difference between a system function and a user defined function. Some of your other complaints are valid, but have been raised before. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that LSL wasn't scripter for those of us at program at our day job. _____________________

One or two days to learn the basics, one or two years to master the finer points of how to work around LSL's atrocious limitations ![]() I started reaching limitations after my second script. The highly regaurded and easy to use lsl had now become a chore to get somethings working the way you want. |

I'm seriously sooo over the 64 meter limitation on moving objects, and fast travel between sims is so unreliable. How about adding the feature of an object iming to a group. What about transparency that shows the alpha of other objects but not its own. These are just some of the one i've come across, give me a couple of months of play and this list will grow.

programming is not comparable to scripting erm, uhm, buhhh, whaa? mono scripting will change the world. I'm not scripting again until that's ready. _____________________

The question posed by the thread starter was "Why do so few people choose to script?".
One approach to answering this question would be to present flaws and shortcomings in the LSL language and editing system that make programming in LSL less rewarding. That is what I did in my previous post. The responses that try to refute the statements in my post are too irrelevant to the question posed by the thread starter to bother addressing in detail. Ways to get around the language's and editing system's shortcomings, how one is not bothered by something that does bother me, or justifications for why LSL is the way it is are not reasons why few people script. One reason why people might find scripting not worth the bother is that they are unable to do any math beyond adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, and that only with a calcuator, if even that much. I deal on a regular basis with adults with college degrees who are incapable of solving the following problem: "Given a sign which is 3 feet tall and 2 feet across, if you want a sign that is the same shape and which is 9 feet tall, how wide would that sign be?". This type of math was covered in the fourth grade back when I was in school, and the people I am talking about passed math classes for a number of years beyond fourth grade, but aren't mathematically literate enough to pass a fourth grade math class. A large portion of what folks want to do in LSL take a little bit of math, arithmetic, geometry, and related skills and if you don't have those abilities you may not find LSL much fun. ------------------------ By the way, is including a bunch of stuff in Greek supposed to be clever or funny? So there's a saying "It all looks like Greek to me", is that supposed to make the Greek stuff some kind of clever in joke or something? _____________________

Thank you, Jillian. But I need something WAY WAY WAY more basic than that. That's like looking at a third-year biology book before you've read the first two years. You don't even know what the TERMS mean.
coco P.S. Suezanne, I think that Greek stuff was a takeoff on my saying it's all Greek to me. I went on Babblefish and wrote in Greek, "Do you think I actually looked up all you just said?" lol But when I put it back in Babblefish, it didn't translate that back to English very well. I minored in math in college, for what that's worth, and would really like to learn the basics. Only the basics, but from the ground up. Unfortunately, I gather LSL isn't something you can learn from any other source, as it isn't used anywhere else? And the tutorials on here assume you already have done scripting apparently. So that leaves me where I am now - if and when I get spare time, I'll go back to trying to figure it out for myself, in some sort of backwards fashion, but I hate wasting time reinventing the whole wheel when I know somebody could write up something truly basic and put it on the Wikipedia or wherever that was and people like me could learn to put a sit script in a chair. coco |
