What Pen said!

I have NEVER played those games. I love my "Second" Life. Everyone has different reasons. As the majority of residents here in SL we do not view this world as a game.
While SL may be different things for different people, for me its a way to meet others that if not for this platform I would never have had the pleasure of knowing. I also get to help others and enjoy that.
We are unique, close knit and loyal.
When afforded the opportunity to cross over from SL to rl I am always rewarded. Having met and formed rl friendships that I treasure.
As Cristiano said sl is lacking in some areas but that does not deter me nor him. I have many friends in sl who enjoy playing games such as those referenced in this thread. But they all come home to check in and see how each other are doing. If everyone enjoyed the same things and there were no variations how dull would that be?
And I think to myself... what a wonderful world!

Normal MMORPG games provide a structure with:
1. Unified definition of success (top level, best equipment) 2. Easily measured progress (xp, skill points etc..) 3. Gameplay that encourages cooperation (games that promote solo play have no business being massively multiplayer) 4. Challenge (completing some really tough quest or defeating a really tough monster gives a sense of accomplishment because not everyone has the abiltiy or time to do it)
SL brings something comepletely different to the table, so I wouldn't even bother trying to compare them.

This is probably one of the biggest things currently lacking in SL. The ease of collaboration. Building in SL is currently a solitary activity for the most part which can be just flat out boring at times. If I want to build with my friend, we have to type to each other or use an outside program or the phone to talk. I think voice in SL would make it easier for people to work together in SL. Currently the way that permissons and groups are established make sharing resources with others difficult. There are plenty of workarounds but the built in capity is greatly lacking.

From: Cocoanut Koala OK now, if things go true to form, many of you won't look at ANY of what I have said as legitimate. Attack every bit of it, and defensively. Tell me it's my tone. Tell me it's ME, cause I'm just so horrible (and list all the ways), and conclude that therefore all these observations are invalid. And if you do say that, then you will know you are one of the people I'm talking about. Some people just don't have what it takes to be popular. Does this mean no one should be popular? Or is it that everyone should only be equally popular? And who exactly gets to decide where the line is? Is there any way you can post and not make it 'all about you' or 'all about the silent millions you seem to think you're representing'? Nice derail. BUT... to get back to the topic -- the reason SL doesn't pull the numbers the other MMO games pull is threefold: 1) Marketing - They do not market effectively. 2) Consistancy - They are not consistant in themselves or in representing themselves. 3) Quality - They do not offer a product that, in its present incarnation, can compete head to head with other offerings in the marketspace.

The obvious answer to me is that a lot of people enjoy playing games. Yes, games. Those things SL insists they are not one of. If SL isn't a game, gamers won't want to 'play' it. There are a lot more gamers out there than there are platformers. They want goals. They want treasure and loot. They want to advance. They want to win. They want to play a game with a goal.
