I use WASD if the game or environment requires a lot of mousing, otherwise I use arrows. I got used to arrow keys playing old PC games like Stunts.

WASD for me. F to fly, E is up, C is down. If you set your chat preference to close the chat window when pressing return, those keys are always available to you.
Im used to these keys for movement because they are common on most shooters. WASD is natural for hand placement and right handed mouse use. It is awkward to reach over to the right of the keyboard with my left hand to use the arrows. |

How about user-assignable keys?
I normally use the number keypad, but there's no method to remap keys. _____________________

I mostly use the arrow keys, as I tend to keep the chat bar open for typing. But that's just me.

Sorries, OWL... I'll vote, to state my preference of Arrow Keys: but I wish to make it clear that while I like them more personally, I am open to new options of interfacing and my vote isn't meant to look down on WASD-acclimated people at all.
![]() ![]() That being said, okay... rock the vote. LOL. Nolan: Yes, I try to. It makes up for the antisocialness of my formative years. ![]() _____________________

One of the things I like about SL is there are so many ways to do the same things. Its sort of overwhelming at first and seems sort of crazy to have the different ways, but it does allow you the option to play the most comfortable way for you.
It would be nice to be able to assign keys, but Im pretty used to the layout now. I might bind backspace to send me home, or some single keys for linking and unlinking. I guess if I had the option to bind keys for personal use I would think of others. |

OMG... that's one of the reason why SL appeals so much to me, Loki -- in this day and age, customizability is a very important thing, because many people take many paths to the same destination. The medium may change but the message remains the same, and I'm definitely a fan of the comfortability factor. ![]() _____________________

Zuzi, how did you get it to work? Is there a file to modify or something? it just plain old works for me. one thing is you have to have num lock off tho so that might be catching you. isn't there some file in the sl folder you can edit to rearrange what keys do what? |

I'm left-handed. While I can mouse with either hand, when it comes to more accurate tasks, I prefer using my left-hand, which also means needing to buy mice that I can easily use with either hand (which sucks usually -- best I've found is the basic Microsoft WheelMouse Optical USB deal for $20, no frills, funtions great).
However, when it comes to games requiring me to use the keyboard and the mouse at once, that means mouse left, keyboard right -- so I use the arrow keys and do very well with the keypad and del/end/etc six set right there for shortcuts in addition to ctrl, shift, etc all nearby. If this was during my trackball infatuation, I'd be using WASD, because trackballs are now all horribly sculpted for righties, usually. Damn you all. |

Arrows. Arrows all the time. In my mind, they just make sense. WASD is just screwy in my opinion.

WASD, all the way.
I'd actually vote in the poll, but it's a BLOODY FRELLING public poll, and I don't like those. _____________________

WASD, just more natural, and easier to transition from WASD to typing, rather than from arrow keys to typing I find.
Then I just tap the enter key and type away. I can't be happy with any game that doesn't let me use WASD, any MMORPG that is Point and Click, loses points instantly with me, anything that forces me to use arrow keys or any other to move, loses points instantly. WASD and remapping keys....
02-12-2005 18:25
First of all, I am totally a WASD fan. I wasn't at first, but Xylor came along and showed me the error of my ways (and how much easier it was to navigate using the mouse and WASD). (Although, since he's a lefty, he tends to use the arrow keys... go fig)
Second of all, it's easy to remap keys. I'm not sure how Mac does it, but if you are running windows just go into C:\Program Files\SecondLife\app_settings\keys.ini and edit to your hearts content. ![]() And no, I didn't know this. Xylor told me when we were discussing this thread. ![]() ![]() Delairen |

Ideally there'd be a GUI for the keyboard remapping. It's a fairly standard feature in video games, and a shame that a place like Second Life, which thrives on customizability, doesn't facilitate it. _____________________
