Kinda like AOL keywords; I was thinking that certain projects should set up HIPPO keywords, to make it cheaper than making a group. It can be a secret keyword for people inside the group, maybe... just a thought...

EEK!!!!
AOL == Root of All Evil.
M$(N) == AOL's demented little cousin.

Attempting to mimik them is complete idiocy (IMHO) :D

Nothing personal Christopher, but I find the whole AOL bashing thing to be elitist, misinformed, and just plain stupid. AOL is an excellent product for the market that it serves. If you're a more skilled internet user who has no need for it or it doesn't suit your personal taste, good for you. It in no way makes you "better" than an AOL user. Same deal with MSN. Have you had personal bad experiences with either product or are you just dissing them because it makes you feel superior? I guess you think the 10 million or so people who use AOL do so because they're too stupid to know any better?

Attempting to mimic "the cool kids" by dissing things you probably have no personal experience with is complete idiocy (IMHO) :D

Chip, most people who use ANY product do so because the TV told them to and they dont know any better.

Actually where I work we have a LOT of problems with AOL users. Their interfaces do not work with our web pages or the databases we subscribe to. Half of our reference calls are troubleshooting AOL problems. Then we get to go through the joys of getting them to install netscape or internet explorer while having AOL on.

not fun at all.

I know people who are *still* waiting for their refund when AOL charged their credit cards during their 'free' trial.

My other experiences with AOL haven't made me see it in a positive light, but then I am an experienced computer user, and I acknowledge that it's a great package for people who do not have the computer experience that we have. Not everybody knows a techy-type who can help them get their dialup, browser and email working how they want (or to explain to them how they would ideally want it).

AOL, love it or hate it, it does serve a need (the user-base should illustrate that for doubters). This I totaly acknowledge... but I still don't like AOL.

I have a big problem with the amount of waste AOL produces/posts thru your door, and it is an environmental concern IMHO. If they stopped their unsolicited junk-mail-thru-your-door and just used supermarket stands and magazines to distribute their trial CD's, I'd be very much happier.

I have been thrown out of a supermarket for trying to walk out with ALL the free AOL CD's on the stands, but that was just hi-jinx on my part. (it was more of a challenge to the 'free' aspect, rather than a one-man attempt to rid the world of their CD's... honest :D )

To sum up - AOL is good for some people, not good for others. I think it is totaly acceptable to thank them or flame them as is your wont. I hope my post has come in somewhere in the middle.

Not to un-hijak this thread or anything...

But I think coming up with KeyWords and posting them is a great idea - because otherwise, you'll have a million variations on a theme and no one will actually find one another!

That said, I'm in a bread slump and can't actually think of any....

I'm almost afraid of it... perhaps it stands for Haney In Linden Labs Office, and it'll spam us with nude pics of Haney.

EDIT: I'm such a moron... I just spelled Hippo -> "Hillo" I should be shot..

HIPPOs explained at this announcement.

The idea of posting suggestions for keywords is great. That greatly increases the chances of matching.

Well, sorry for the rant, but I've been using AOL without a single problem since 1993. It's not my primary ISP but it's a great email client (worm free). They were a client of mine back then and I still have many friends who work there. If you remember their TV commercials from the early 90's, whenever you saw images of the software, that was me driving the mouse. I just get sick of the "AOL sucks" and "AOL'ers are morons" crap. Yes, a great many AOL users ARE morons... but AOL didn't make them that way. They'd be wasting the time of some poor tech support person for some other software if they didn't use AOL. My IQ doesn't suddenly drop when I open the AOL client. Between AIM and Communicator (their new stand alone email app which IMHO is MUCH better than Outlook) I rarely use the main client. I think most of the anti-AOL sentiment dates back to the early days of the internet when suddenly it became accessible to people other than the technically elite, much to their resentment. It amounts to little more than "mine is bigger."

Ive actually had experiance with *both* AOL and MSN, but only the former as an ISP (luckily).

I was a user of their software from versions 3.0 to 7.0. NONE of them provided the kind of service a half decent non-half the world subscribed ISP gives.

Ive had more problems with the AOL software then any other software I have ever loaded on to my PC (and mac).

I *immediately* switched to DSL as soon as it was available in my area, and tried out the MSN Browser (was tired of only having Outlook Express able to read/write to hotmail.com addresses).
Personally, I thought the interface was too clunky and slow for anyone (I agree, Im a bit one-sided) to use.

But this was a long time ago, the services may have changed their policies by now.

But.... > $20 /mo FOR DIALUP!?!?

Anyways, back on topic. Ive never owned a HIPPO, so I dont really have an opinion here :D

I have a HIPPO now... and everyone else should, because... I enjoy IM spam... (ok, I haven't actually gotten any IMs from it yet... but I have a feeling it might propogate spam)
