I'm gonna whip up a Pacific Electric 500-class trolley car .. a bit less ambitious for the first pass of scripting (no worries about linking multiple vehicles toghether in train-like motion). Look for it soon, maybe this weekend; doing some research on dimensions, color schemes, etc.

Maybe we should move this thread to the 'Projects' forum.

yes we should start a thread for this in the project forum.

we should also wait until the group code is implemented. this doesn't have to be about one group. but we're gonna need co-ownership of objects and land to get this across the ground.

we can maintain enthusiasm between now and then by holding little events to show off new textures and scripting. we can also hold a bridge building contest or two.

With much-welcome cooperation from the residents of Magenta along the line -- Cornelius Bach, Cloey Sunchaser, and Germaine Lafollette -- the GSLR is now extended a bit into Magenta. The "curve to Maroon" question is still being pondered. Cornelius is a bit leery, with some reason, of trains running under his living room. Might wait on this a couple weeks, see what changes happen in the SE corner of Magenta.

I am not leary about the train running under my living room exactly. My concerns are that the track is not low enough and the train itself will pass "Through" my living room.

If anyone who wants to support the train is thinking of bidding in the upcoming Maroon auction: the parcels along the southern edge of Maroon would all support the railway very nicely. No need to deed land or sell it ... just allow a few prims! Germaine Lafollette has nicely allowed the line to run between her house and Cornelius Bach's place in Magenta ... soon the track will be laid to the Maroon border.

Sometime after the v1.2 land changes become official, we'll organize a Great Second Life Railway group, I hope.

If you guys are still looking for a scripter, Il gladly help out :)

I have a working train-like movement system (which works extremely reliably across sim borders) contact me IW (or PM on the forums) if you want a demo :D

Wow, no idea why I didn't notice this thread before, this sounds awesome.

I'll offer help if any is still needed, although I'm not exactly sure what I'd be able to help with atm. I'm able to script, animate/texture (to a point), build, etc, and I have a nice smoke particle system already done...

But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

I'd be happy to help with scripting. Gimme a yell with stuff to do or something ;).

Chris: Would I be able to take a look at that train script? I'm working on coding my Zepp atm and I think that *might* help (if it uses non-physical movement).

"TRAIN!! Move it or lose it!!!" - I knew SL would turn into EverQuest one day ;)

Sounds like an excellent plan :D I will of course co-operate if/when you run through Clara.

Just enable the land to damage so that a few banditos can rob it from time to time for chits n giggles.

Actually, it can be adapted to any type of movement, non-phys or physical, doesnt matter really ;)

I've also made something that might help standing passengers on a physical vehicle stay in one place (relative to the vehicle).

Contact me IW and Ill show it to yah :D

Hey all, thanks for the support! I'm noting down names here, and (once the group land holding rules settle down) we'll be able to organize a group. I'll pass the GSLR scripting "Request for Proposal" to the people who mentioned scripting here ..

... thanks again to Germaine for letting the GSLR through her land, to the Maroon border. Track is laid, a footbridge spans it, the trolley is waiting ...

Hello yes super idea, i love that train its great, and often wished i could ride it.

I am happy to help, i am no good at scripts but ok designer and ok builder, especially garden areas... I am very willing to help and very willing to allow a train line through my land, and have nice big plot with extensive japanese garden in Tehama. Like Briana, I would be happy to make a little structure, like a Japanese station stop for the gardens, or something.

Great idea...

Let me know, IM me

This thread makes me think of that awfull song...

"Cmon ride the train, the choo choo ride it, cmon ride the train! I think I can I think I can!" "Cmon ride the CHOO CHOO!! The CHOO CHOO!"

Totaly off topic, but heh, its about trains.

"It says I Choo Choo Choose you and theres a picture of a train on it!"

CHOOO CHOOO!!

Nothing wrong with reviving a thread like this one... better than starting a new 'un

How's it going? Project still alive?

Time to bring this back from the dead again. :-)

I'm just wondering where we stand with getting the train up and running? Track has been run through Indigo and we're all dying to ride the train. :-)

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help, BTW.

Ah, the reason for our slow startup is mostly because of me :)

I have been unable to find a more decent method of train-train connections. So far, because of the weaknesses in the SL joint system, I use car2car communication and llMove2Target() to keep the cars in line. This works relatively fine, the cars do stay one behind the next, and I can support an unlimited amount of cars. The problem is, is that the gaps between each car are extremely difficult to bridge. Even at relatively slow speeds, the gap between each car is well... too large for confort.

Ive been working, abeat (sp?) unsuccessfully to close this gap, and would love to hear some suggestions about how to resolve this. Im not sure how the group feels about completely opensourcing the mechanism we use, so I cant post the scripts here at the moment.

Thanks for the update, Christopher. May we could get a Linden to give us some ideas? I realize the trolleys in the city SIMs are not as complex, but maybe Ben Linden could give us some ideas on how it all works.

In the meantime, would anyone be interested in releasing a 1 car train just to get things moving? Just an idea. :-)

Regards,
