Firefox problem

In anticipation of Firefox coming to SL, I'd like to get this problem fixed. I've posted numerous times on Mozilla.org 's forum but have been unable to solve my problem. Maybe someone here has some fresh suggestions....

I have been using Firefox since beta and really liked it and never had any problems.

A problem started suddenly about 4 weeks ago. Firefox suddenly would crash immediately upon opening.I would get a Windows dialog telling me Firefox had encountered a problem and had to close. Nothing new had been added to the computer recently except about one week prior, I had added a Wacom tablet.

These are some of the remedies I tried:

Uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox (at least 10 times) I rebooted each time. I got a new copy from Mozilla.org. I tried 1.04 and 1.05. I cleared out all temp files before each install.

Did a complete registry clean. (twice)

ran a check on the disk. (CKDISK)

Made new profiles and deleted the old ones.

Manually deleted every Firefox file I could find.

Restored my computer to one week prior to the problem.

Deleted all extensions, themes, etc, from the install.

Ran Adaware, spybot, spysweeper and nothing unusual comes up. I rarely have problems of that sort but thought I would check anyway. I run Norton virus protection

I only manually updated so I don't think it was an autoupdate problem.

Now I can get it to open in safe mode, but when I try to navigate to any major site, (Yahoo.com; google.com; mozilla.org) the browser crashes. I can get to secondlife.com and other lesser known sites.

From reading through their forums, it seems some file got corrupted somewhere and I am not sure how to locate such a file. Since I have done so many new installs I thought it would have gotten fixed by now.

Any suggestions?

I really miss my Firefox and can not imagine the intraweb without it.

My first inclination was possibly a virus or spyware hijacking the search engines, but you've checked that. Any useful information in the event viewer -> application log?

Barring that, have you run Hijack this? If you feel like posting the log I'd look it over later. If you didn't make any other changes to Firefox the week prior to this popping up, I'd say something else happened to the pc, a corrupt application or library that firefox needs, or a memory resident program that conflicts. What about Windows automatic updates, did one happen just before this started?

When you restored the computer, did the problem immediately pop back up, or take a few hours/days?

I hate to say it - and am empathetic, having this happen to me - but once a Microsoft Windows registry or core DLLs are borked, you might as well consider the system irretrievably hosed.

It could be as simple as HKLM/classid/{0230942335823032042304932}/bork-bork-bork no longer has the correct value but nowhere will any part of this wonderful OS even begin to point you at the problem. Registry "cleaners" are known to cause problems as well, because in the end, I don't think that any human knows what a self-consistent registry should be.

My recommendation: backup everything that you can think of and reload the splendid OS-wannabe from MS and spend a day reinstalling all your applications while cursing most of Redmond. My self-defense against this is to delcare "this machine is for pshop and surfing" and then load nothing else on it.

The Windows core is so subject to bit rot that most machines in use over a year can be considered "broken". I use Windows, but you can't make me like it. ;)

I'm not sure if this tells me where the problem is. I know my way a little bit around a computer but I am definitely not a technician.

I did get a shell32 error (specifically; "An exception occurred while trying to runShell32.dll,Control_RunDLL wscui.cpl";) 3 times recently while using IE. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Here's the HijackThis log:

I don't have Windows autoupdate on, as I prefer to do these manually and have not updated for a couple months.
The problem came back immediately after I did the restore.

2nd, Malachi.

This computer is about 2.5 years old so it may be past the point of usefulness you speak about. I am in the process of ordering a new one so after that arrives I may take your suggestion and start over fresh with a new install on this one.

So I'm understanding: Firefox always crashes immediately in windows. In Safe Mode Firefox will work somewhat, getting to sites like SL is ok, but yahoo crashes.

If it works *fine* in safe mode, then there's something in memory that's conflicting. If it's working intermittently, then I'd say there's something fundamentally conflicting between windows and firefox.

-----------

Ok, just out of curiosity, update to the latest firefox, it came out yesterday I think. The Event log error doesn't do much for me I'm afraid, I was hoping it would tell us that it caused an error in something else, and not itself or unknown.

-----------

WSCUI.CPL is the Windows Security Center Control Panel. Now that can affect your firewall and from what I just read, can conflict with Norton and other 3rd party firewalls sometimes. Because it's the firewall, it's *possible* that it interferes with Firefox. If you know you made some changes to your firewall settings that could be the culprit.

-----------

If that doesn't work, you could run msconfig and uncheck the following things. I pulled the descriptions from google. Read the little descriptions, because some of them (like the pen tablet)
you'll want to re-enable once you determine they aren't the problem with firefox. For the record, all of these that I have installed on my PC are disabled (Or I would disable them) except for the pen tablet driver.

[QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Apple QuickTime tray icon, not really necessary and will probably come back after you run a quicktime movie.

[ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
Responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player's components.

[TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
Schedules for manual update checks for Real Networks products

PrintScreen.lnk = C:\Program Files\Gadwin Systems\PrintScreen\UNWISE.EXE
PrintScreen.lnk = C:\Program Files\Gadwin Systems\PrintScreen\PrintScreen.exe
Both of these are Gadwin PrintScreen screen capture program. If you aren't actively using it, uncheck them.

SpywareGuard.lnk.disabled
Already looks disabled, it's the program Spywareguard. If you use that program now then maybe something else killed it. If you don't use it at all, then it's safe to uncheck.

Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
Calibrates the monitor for Adobe Products. Not 100% necessary, but if you're a hardcore Adobe user, you might want to return it.

TabUserW.exe.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WTablet\TabUserW.exe
This is the tablet driver, kill it to see if Firefox starts behaving again, but don't expect the tablet to work right if you do.

[SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe
Checks for/installs Java updates. It's reccomended you leave it, but mine's been disabled for some time now without any obvious ill effects.

[nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
Part of NVidia's Nview features installable alongside it's graphics hardware products. Adds extra functionality to your video card, mine's been disabled for a while no problems.

------------

You gave me the opportunity to try this site out: http://hjt.iamnotageek.com I dumped your log into it to see what it caught. It didn't' like the line:

O16 - DPF: {51641EF3-8A7A-4D84-8659-B0911E947CC8} (SetupHtml Class) - http://www.contenidospc.com/instalador.cab

Although I'm not convinced it would cause problems with firefox.

It also complained about the line:

C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\WinPoET\wros.exe

Saying it might be spyware/malware but if Verizon's your ISP, then I wouldn't worry about it.

-----------

If you do all this, and it still doesn't work, I totally agree with Malachi's suggestion. It's a pain, but yeah 3 years is the longest an install has ever lasted for me. Also the more you use it and the more applications you try, the shorter that lifespan seems to get. Hope something in there helps you, any other questions just ask.

Christ, all this to use a web browser? Reformatting just to use a web browser?

Lord, just buy a Mac.

Have you tried creating a new Firefox profile?

Creating a new profile and deleting old ones was one of the first things I tried. (see list above)

I can run an old version of Netscape Communicator but I downloaded the Mozilla 1.7.10 and it behaves just like Firefox. It will go to some sites ( like secondlife.com) but as soon as I try to open google, cnn, or any well known site, it crashes and generates an error message.

My Firefox won't update anymore - as of about a week ago. It just hangs on "downloading and installing components." I know my connection to the web is good, and I haven't installed anything new on the PC for weeks - so I am wondering - is the update server is having issues?

Garoad, I have Opera and did use it until I found Firefox. I also have been using Maxthon recently.

I still prefer Firefox and this is just one of those crazy problems that will bug me until I find the fix.

Actually, Windows is extremely reliable now, except for those who create problems for themselves. Then there's Windows Server 2003, which never goes down unless you want it to.

I wish that were true. The very fact that Windows gets slower the longer its installed on a machine tells me that something is inherantly flawed in its design. AFAIK, the main reason is the windows registry. It's a centralized repository of data, with no security built in whatsoever. Any program can modify any other program's settings, given that it knows the location of the settings within the registry. Its also a *single* file, leaving it wide open to corruption and fragmentation. Programs often leave random pieces of junk lying around in there, never cleaning up after themselves fully, so it gets bloated over time. As was said, even registry cleaners cant fully decontaminate a registry, as the registry can contain almost anything, there's no defined pattern to a "valid" registry entry.

Actually Windows does have registry security, but most users decide to login as administrators, which gives them full access rights to any part of the registry, and many applications incorrectly require administrator rights for that program to run. Most of the breakage, corruption, application messiness is caused by the crummy programs people install written by companies that don't give a rip about writing software well. And it is big name software companies, not just small players, that are guilty of this. The OS can't be expected to fix the flaws in other vendors products. A key part of making an OS run right is not installing applications that are written wrong.

On computers I run, I don't have registry corruption or slowdown problems because I avoid software from companies that have a habit of writing software poorly, like Adobe, Symantec and Netscape to name just a few.

Adobe sucks...hahaha YES someone who agrees with me!

Chris is right though. Windoze blows... I mean come on, can't some solution be found to stop it from becoming slower with time? Why is it so hard?

I'll tell you why. M$ doesn't care about that. In fact, I'm sure they LIKE the fact that Winblows gets slower with time. It encourages people to buy new hardware, which in turn, gets them to buy a new copy of the latest windowz OS. Or if not new hardware, it encourages them to upgrade the OS "for a faster experience"! The time-delayed slowness makes people, slowly over time, believe that their computers are slow or are "getting outdated". I know, because it works on me every time. :)

Just use IE. Really easy and does what it needs to do, Surfs the Web.

I've never liked IE, I used Netscape Communicator until they stopped updating it.

After you have used some of the other, better browsers for a while, it is very difficult to go back to IE. IE can't really compare to Firefox with all the great extensions you can load into it.

If IE had tabbed browsing, better security, more customization (click simple toggle to turn cookies/javascript/java/plugins on/off), zoom, a search bar in it's main interface, mouse gestures, and maybe a few more things, it'd probably be the best choice.

I installed some windows updates last night and Firefox started working again. I can't believe I went over a month with no Firefox and this is all it took to fix it.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

I was a Netscap person for many years. I moved over to IE because it was better. Netscap chaged and became more crap. I have tried otehr browsers like FireFox and don't find them better then IE. Somethings I see as a wast. Good thing about IE, I have NEVER had a problem with it. Netscap crashed allot and some sites looked like shit. That was the same with the other browsers. My personal feeling is you all hate IE just because you have Gates and MS. Your hate for them is because they have what you wiish you had.
