From: Zero Grace You are utterly misinformed.
The worst thing that could happen is that you could be sued, just like file-sharers are being sued by the RIAA. Actually, considering the U.S. is looking at criminalizing copyright infringement, the worst that could happen is you could be extradited and thrown in jail.
Why, do most SL players live on Mars?
Go ahead and thumb your nose. Canada has a recording industry too, and every major U.S. label has a counterpart here [edit: "here" being "Canada". I'm Canadian.]. Well, It's not possible to prosecute outside your jurisdiction first of all. Secondly, there is no prison for SL copyright infringers. Not gonna happen either. Also, countries like China, Russia etc have no copyright laws at all. Bottom line...it's largely up to the creator to take the appropriate measures to protect his/her work.

From: someone Secondly, there is no prison for SL copyright infringers. Not gonna happen either. You're quite right. There is no prison specifically set up to detain Second Life residents. But that's not what I was suggesting. From: someone Also, countries like China, Russia etc have no copyright laws at all. Yeah, I hear they eat babies and worship false idols too. You're dead wrong about both China ( 1, 2) and Russia ( 1, 2).

Bottom line...it's largely up to the creator to take the appropriate measures to protect his/her work. The subject of jurisdiction / locality is an interesting one to debate. Isn't it possible though that the location of the SL servers is what matters in this case? They are in the US and I assume subject to US laws. When you sign up for SL you agree to abide by those laws. By your logic.. it is no problem to visit another country and break all kinds of laws there as long as you are a foreigner. As for the creator taking appropriate measures to protect their work - pretty much any copy protection can be broken with enough effort. The only truly safe measure is to never share your work with anyone at all. What a cold, lifeless world this would be if everyone took that route.

Thanks for the links, I found them informative. Although these countries have become more serious about copyright, it's apparent they are not concerned with it at the SL level.

For those interested in the actual text of International Copyright Law: http://www.wipo.int/treaties/en/ip/berne/trtdocs_wo001.htmlIt's a bit more of a read than most are willing to mull through, I'm sure - but it should provide a more definitive answer. From: billy Madison everyone is always worried about copywrite stuff here.. how many copywrite cases have y ou heard of lately? lol none So far there haven't been any cases (that I know of). All it takes is one player to be sued for many other companies to start looking into SL for any copyright infringements. Though this will make us all a bit wary of any images we have, the positive side is that the players that only use these images from movies and such will have to find a more creative way to sell content.
