version 2.0 clutter issue

In the Building forum, PetGirl pointed out that the increased draw distance in version 2.0 will make the sky appear cluttered with garbage . I suppose lowering the draw distance would solve the problem, but then what would the point of improving the feature in the first place? Do you see the clutter as an asthetic problem? Do you think it will inspire people to store less things in the sky? How should the problem (assuming you think it is a problem) be addressed?

When they bring back the grid after 2.0, everything should be turned physical. That'll solve it :)

That would be ideal, as for once, the sky would actually be falling.

I think we have clutter because at this time we don't SEE clutter. When 2.0 comes out I believe everybody will reassess the aesthetics of their now highly visible builds. Many will take it into their own hands to tidy things up. But of course there are users who are unconcerned about the aesthetics of their builds RIGHT NOW and there are debates over what to do about it. 2.0 will change the scope but not the nature of this ongoing issue.

Also interesting to note, the Lindens have a long term plan where they are carefully placing all new sims in a pattern so that when viewed from space it looks like my bum :D

to be serious for a moment... it depends what you mean by clutter. There are a lot of skyboxes and builds - thats not clutter to me. But there IS a crapload of stuff at the 768m mark because people lose stuff up there for various reasons. I used to do it all the time, and frankly god knows how, but I'd go up above my own plot and be like 'wtf? how the hell did I get all this up here?!'. But many people don't even think to look. When they can see it, I think a lot of that will clear up.

As for actual builds, I think Aimee is right. I know I've looked at some of my bigger builds with different draw distances and fog and they can look markedly different. People will undoubtedly reevaluate and rejig stuff after 2.0 if things look horrid.

... Or come to the forums to post 'OMG!1!11 WTF?!!11! Lindens borked my builds! PUT 1.9 BACK!' messages. :p

I think the intended advantage is that while you could have a draw distance 20 sims deep with maybe 4 or 5 fps, most people would be able to have a repectable 2 - 4 sim view distance with perhaps 30+ fps. At that distance the sky would not look so cluttered.

This is an absolute certainty no matter WHAT happens in 2.0.

And I agree with Kris. I think a lot of junk will be cleaned up on lots where people do not even know they have stuff lost up in the sky. And I personally won't mind seeing pretty builds up there, so to me that would not be junk.

My main thoughts go to people who no longer "play" SL, but still have stuff on their land. How many of them have junk up in the sky that will never get removed?

How high up can objects be rezzed? Is that the 768m mark that you refer to, Kris? And, I haven't tested this yet, but how high up can we fly with powered/flight-stick assistance?

Thanks...Cazzj

Objects can be rezzed up to 768 meters, as Kris says. How high can an av fly with scripted assistance? I don't know, but people have made it well above 10,000,000 meters. Things get wierd due to floating point errors after 700,000 meters through. Physical objects and vehicles can fly up to 4096 meters, falling off world after that.

When is this 2.0 coming? I worry about it because I'm thinking it might be so different my computer will no longer be able to do it.

I'd guess no earlier than 6 months from when 1.7 is finally deployed (looking to be late summer at best anyway).

1) 1.7 is the last 1.x release?
2) Have we run out of current issues suddenly and we are projecting to the future for source matieral?

The last major point release, yeah. The internal name is "2.0", I imagine because it'll be so chock full of juicy feature bits that a single point release version can't justify it! :P That's the gist of the "official" position, anyway.

Well, it is a valid concern, however, a moot point, as almost no one will change their skyboxen to look more dignified once 2.0 goes live. It's too much work. I mean, geez, people can't even make housecubes look decent on the ground now, what's to say they care what's 500m above ground level?

It is this talk about Havoc 2, Cristiano. I don't know what that is but it sounds like a whole different thing, and my computer is 3 years old, and I am wondering if it is going to do 2.0, that's all.

Havock 2 will be in 1.7, and is a server side thing. No worries there for you.
the 2.0 client is a new render system, and as I understand it, it can be pared down enough that current hardware specs will handle it. So, if that information is right, you don't have a thing to worry about there, either. :)

That wasn't directed at you, just the thread in general - it seems odd to be concerned about something not scheduled to come out until sometime in 2006 and something that people have only seen a screen shot of. A focus of the client upgrades, including the new rendering engine coming in 2.0, is to help performance, which is subpar at times even on high end machines - which could only help make it run better on older machines as well. The rendering engine replacement is supposed to be far more scaleable than the current one for older hardware, while hopefully finally taking advantage of higher end features. Havok 2 should also make SL run better on your system, not worse.
