I have the latest week - when not building - been flying around up up up in the air.. looking around..

And so much NICE DONE things up.. to look at.. BUT isnt it time for all you builders to clean up around your buildings..

Feels like in space - BUT NASA has some sort of control of al things up in space so no satellite crash to a spare part or similar...

But in SL.. do Linden have control over SL space?:-))))

Are: ”Keep SL Space Clean from Trash” - next slogan?

there is a reason we build up in the air ( I feel like I can speak on the behalf of air-builders in the sandboxes cause the AN could be partially reponsible for it too) is because.. of people!

We dont want people coming up to intrude on our work, sitting on parts of it yelling "GIMM A COPEE FOR FREE NOW!!!" at us, attracting crowds of people to stare at us and then rez objects all over our builds. Building at a high altitude discourages many of them. (except for a select few that are out to be annoying, one was warned by lindens 4 times in the same day to leave me and my co-worker mazer alone)

and NASA has less controll of space than you think.. There is loads of non operational satalites, left overs from NASA and other space agency missions, etc. in orbit around earth.

It's "quiet" up there, no one just stopping by to chat, you can concentrate. Also, nothing around ot distract the eye, nothing moving around (trees/vehicles/rezzing and de rezzing stuff w/in the draw distance), and often less lag.

Oh, and maybe most importantly...

Because we can!

I think Petgirl, in her special way,was refering to after building. When the build is done and there are still bits and pieces floating. Also, I don't think she was refering to sandboxes, as I do believe those get cleaned up every day. I have a nieghbor who has a bush up around 600 feet. I'm sure he doesn't even know it's there. I am thinking that's the kind of stuff she is referiing to. Not building at high levels but leaving bits and pieces that hang there forever.

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?

Wait til 2.0. It's widely assumed that that stuff will quickly go bye bye when the new rendering engine hits. With the 2.0 renderer, we'll be able to see for miles, not just a few tens of meters or hundreds of meters. Objects in the sky will no longer be out of view. People who have left stuff up there by accident will be able to find it and delete it. Those who are up there for privacy reasons will have to come up some other way of hiding from the public (something that has been a topic of serious discussion on the forums, and I suspect at LL as well).

If you look at any of the 2.0 screenshots that LL has published, the amount of sky junk really is pretty amazing. It would be hard to imagine it staying that way once everyone is able to see it.

Here's a link to the thread for anyone who hasn't seen the 2.0 renders:

And a sample of the clutter, this image was taken from the SE corner of the snow sims, looking toward the NW. Compare with the map on the secondlife.com front page.

Since so many people create these skyboxes for privacy it seems like Linden Labs would be smart to address thier needs by providing other means to achieve privacy. For example it would be nice to build in an underground space that was inaccessible to others - or only to those you invite (I am talking free from camera-panning and box-sitting tricks - truely private space).

But then again I can see problems with this idea. It might hurt the community aspect to SL if people start spend too much of their time underground. Of course, I am not sure being sequestered in a skybox is any different.

But a creative solution along these lines could clean up the skies and make SL a little more attractive and realistic.

I hope we can still set the fog distance in the new version. I like the view from my land the way it is, and I like the "Myst" feel it gives SL.

Well, even though I rent island space, I still have a 'raised platform.' It is used purely to allow me to leave some stuff around while fiddling, and not seriously impact the nice, calming layout of the groud-level build.

As for privacy, I'm wondering why no one has offered a 'true' gated community island, one that is not seen at all for anyone other than those who rent there? It would probably need to have an 'open house' initially and every now and then, but if people want better privacy that's one way to do it.

So where else do you want us to leave our builds/stuff while building?

I try to keep the 'ground level' clean of ugly builds and experiments, but it inevitable that during building things look awkward and ugly, look at RL construction sites ;) That's one reason for me 'taking to the skies'. (Others are lag and ease of 'clean' drag selection.)

Sometimes I have stuff out for a long time, as I'm usually working on several items/builds at the same time. A lot of this is in unlinked/half finished states, making taking to inventory and re-rezzing a chore. One reason i bought land is to be able to not take everything to inventory and rez all the time while working.

Still, i think that it's a good thing if every land owner flies up once in a while and checks his/her/its land for junk. Most of the junk up in the sky is caused by errors in manipulating prims 'using the numbers' and items getting lost that way.

No wonder i kept getting thrown out of my plane with all that junk in the sky! I for one would like to see Linden labs introducing clear 'no-build/protected' sky lanes along the lines of the raods and such like that they put in place on ground level.

I can see property values plumetting once people can see all the junk and ugly builds within spitting distance of their dream homes.

I would love it, if Linden Labs does what New York City does. CHARGE for airspace, make it so that when you buy Land, the dimmensions you buy are X,Y and Z set. Then only allowing that owner to sue the land above him, by digging deaper into his land tier.

New York City does this to prevent buildings from becoming to tall and limiting the light on street level

We already had a height tax. And a light tax for that matter. Back in the days when prim allocation werent tied to land and you paid for what you rezzed.

It's unlikely that the sky junk is responsible for your getting thrown out of the plane. That was probably a sim crossing bug.

And LL already has 'no-build/protected' sky lanes along the lines of the roads. In fact, they are the roads. :) The roads and waterways are no build and auto-return all the way up.

After looking at those screenshots, lag has taken on a whole new meaning.

Ha! And I felt guilty about my inventory!

fyi, the misc. boxes you see on the ground (grays, creams, greens, blacks) that look like very large 10 x 10 prim with no texture are actually trees, rocks, grass, and such. It's not quite as bad as you think. Though the stuff in the sky ARE indeed skyboxes, lost prim, and other junk.
