This is surprising. Isn't Spain a mostly Roman Catholic country?

I think it's just FANTASTIC what Zapatero is doing in Spain. For gays, for women, for the environment, for everybody.
Yay to him! ![]() |

Great all countries should do that and then also deny the churches to ban the gay communitys... and force them also to allow pils and condoms....

LOL Petgirl!
Although, I can't endorse that idea. Religions should be able to set whatever kinds of silly, outdated, oppressive rules they like. Religions should *not*, however, have any place in dictating or influencing law or the activities of all the citizens. Oh, and personally, I think they should have to pay taxes too, simply because we give them the freedom to discriminate. Call it a discrimination tax if you like. ![]() _____________________

...yes and they already do that: ”Religions should be able to set whatever kinds of silly, outdated, oppressive rules they like.”
The sad thing are that they have the ”power” to still keep both people and goverments to follow the old rules they tell (order).. Goverments dont dare to go against them... as they want to stay in power they to... )))Free the people... let them use condoms and pills all over the world.. IF they want it... |

Agreed, but I honestly think that the church (esp. Catholic) will face the day when if they do NOT change thier old ways and rules they will not exist anymore. From what I've heard enrollment is down (not sure on that), but a lot of people I know don't enroll primarily due to those old rules.
BTW - did I tell you how cute I think your name is? I need to make you a fancy tee or something! ![]() _____________________

I think it's a little silly to blame bigotry and hatred on religion. People are full of hate and bigotry and dislike for people that are different from them. Religion is just a convenient scapegoat. It is easier to blame is on Jesus, the Pope, and the bible than to say “I think homosexuals are icky”.

I agree with your sentiment, Eboni, but keep in mind that many individuals' biases are influenced, from a very early age, by religious education programs. I would assert that, until a state of being is formally labeled as "good" or "bad," individuals are more likely to approach them with neutrality. _____________________

Is this Zapatero's doing, or did he have little to do with it?
Heh, it'd be ironic if a guy who was elected because of a Muslim terrorist attack caused this.. (if they're fundamentalist Muslims I'm sure they'd greatly dislike this news..) ...lol dumbass terrorists.. ![]() _____________________

So it all comes back to people, not religion. Blaming it on religion is a sanitized way of saying people don't like other people. _____________________

(if they're fundamentalist Muslims I'm sure they'd greatly dislike this news..) ...lol dumbass terrorists.. ![]() ![]() I know you probably dont mean to, but you say things like this sometimes without realy checking the facts. Zapaterro was not elected because of a Muslim terrorist attack. Despite the many many times this was said on CNN and by George bush, the facts are otherwise and they speak for themselves. - Zapatero was winning *before* the attack, - Barring a miracle, he would have won anyway, hands down. - The attack was only a very short time before the election (day before?) - The issue that Zapaterro won on was that people were *against the war in Iraq*. The old guard, Capitalo-Fascist, friend of George Bush fellow, (cant remember his name now) lost, basically because he went with Bush on the Iraq War, even though the vast majority of the people of spain were opposed to it. The populace was punishing the previous leader for being an asshole, Zapatero was just the lucky recipient of that protest vote. Absolutely nothign to do with the attack at all, although the news folks could not resist the temptation to create that impression. Probly sells way more papers. ![]() _____________________

The one thing I find ironic about this whole situation is that "conservative, Catholic Spain" is the first nation to place gay marriage on an equal footing with heterosexual marriage -- its statute is broader than Belgium's or the Netherlands'. Could it be that religion and gay marriage are really not mutually exclusive, after all? No doubt, many other nations are going to be watching "guinea pig" Spain, over the coming years, to determine if the predicted doom and gloom comes to pass. Like most of Chicken Little's other predictions, I bet this one's a dud.
