Bad ass! Guess this part of the new rendering changes coming.

Wonder if we'll be able to make our own trees. And if they'll do shadowing, and movement based on interaction with our avatars, and and all that other cool stuff!

Oh, we're definitely going to be anticipating this come after the summer.

And oh... I find it so cool there's specialized niche software for VIRTUAL TREE DEVELOPMENT, of all things. Good lorz.

From: the article

• Linden Lab, maker of the popular “Second Life” role-playing game, will use SpeedTreeRT to create outdoor environments for an updated version of the personal-computer game coming this autumn.

heh

Popular? Is SL really popular already?

role-playing game? Hi, my name is Hiro pendragon, and I'll be playing the role of "virtually the same person I am in real life".

personal-computer game? Not only is personal-computer improper (no hyphen), which any copy-editor should have caught, it's also for the Mac. They obviously didn't interview Cory Linden :)

I smiled at "popular" because it's relative of course, and pointing towards more growth. Hey, it's positive... better than "obscure and tucked-under-a-rock-in-the-middle-of-cyberspace".

I don't like the descriptions-that-don't-quite-fit but eh, that's what happens in the Press. It's why I say SL is a game and it can be so much more too, depending who you are. :)

Ah well! Education-over* ignorance, right Hiro? ;)

Color pallate? I doubt it. We're already 32-bit color, and going any higher would be silly since that's the current industry standard.

The part that is of most concern to Second Lifers in the article:

"Linden Lab, maker of the popular “Second Life” role-playing game, will use SpeedTreeRT to create outdoor environments for an updated version of the personal-computer game coming this autumn.

“Second Life” lets players create personalized online worlds.

SpeedTreeRT will “add more realism ... (and) give consumers more colors to paint with,” said Linden Lab executive Ryan Downe."

Rather perhaps I used the wrong term, will give more colors to paint with. I was saying from our "color pallate". Guess it is some part of the graphics engine. Wonder if this will make Second Life even harder to run on slower computers.

I think they mean that we'll (or they'll) be able to do more mixing between ground textures on the surface patch.

SpeedTree is awesome!

WWIIOL incorporated SpeedTree about a year ago. Perfprmance takes a hit on the highest qulity levels, but I imagine developers find ways to overcome that with other optimizations.

Honestly, the Lindens have done a great job with their own trees and shrubs. As the article mentioned, SpeedTree likely offers a complete solution that will allow more variety of both types and colors for the Lindens to use as they explore strange new landscapes.

Good Luck LL, I look forward to seeing what you all do with the SpeedTree technology.

Yay, love for Negativland! Crosley Bendix would have a ball in SL. I would enjoy seeing someone build Howland Island, as well.

Back on topic:

SpeedTree looks awesome. I am heartened that LL is looking for "Best of Breed" software and not deciding to make every little thing in house.

our future stepping closer

awesome.. i didn't expect SL to advance in this way.. at least not this soon. i expected our trees and such to remain relatively constant in presentation for quite some time, but now i can say i'm ecstatic that i was wrong!

i get the feeling that once we get this upgrade we'll see another huge influx of new SLers.. great promotional material! especially when compared to current (although it'll be outdated upon release) capabilities.

i think i'll go mention this in the forums for SecondSpace... :)

Here is some more info:

We are currently working on modeling our current tree varieties in Speed Tree. They are looking wonderful!

We will not be giving the community tools to create unique trees right away. Giving residents foliage creation tools is definitely something we want to do, we just need to design a smart way to do it.

As a start, we will be making all the trees and allowing the community to rez them just as it is now. Once we move over to using ST we look forward to creating trees and grasses more frequently.

I do not have a specific timeline for when you will start seeing these changes.

Great! Thanks for the further info Ryan. Thinking about it, I can see how allow user created trees may present a problem. Perhaps only estate owners could use custom trees? Or some sort of submission proccess (bleck). Or a built in tree-creator of some sort, hmm.
