I expect to get flamed and traumitized beyond all belief by this post but why do so many people in Second Life wear all black? I have nothing against people wearing dark dreary black but am really curious. People in SL can wear whatever they want but why they choose to look they are going to a funeral is beyond me.
I know there is a goth element or something that requires people to dress in all black. Is that it?

Maybe it's 'cause black is really easy to get looking "good" in SL. There's less detail needed in a black shirt than, say, a light pink one. That's also why, when prim hair was just getting big, you could really only find black hair.
And yeah, a lot of people like doing the goth thing as well. *shrug* I don't have many black pieces in my clothing. I don't like how it looks on me, I think it makes me look too plain.

In my case, it just sorta happened that way. My black Taco shirt was a gift I liked, and the pants I've just happened to ear for a long while because, really, black looks less distorted when you really flare out the legs as I must, to get 'em over the huge Kewlip ankles. o.o

Black has a reputation as being many different things. Slimming, Goth, elegant, a staple color, etc. It's also, as Lo said, easier to work with in SL. If you ask me, I don't really see black here any more often than I see, say, red or pink. Or white. (Not enough green, though! ) A lot of people do go the Goth route, but there seems to be a lot more hoochies than there are Goths. Either way, it's all about role-playing. People in SL tend to wear things they can't or wouldn't wear in RL. I know I do. Goth is, anyway, not really a mainstream style, even in America, so it's not surprising that we see so much of it in SL. People want to "try it out" because there's no way for them to in RL. Even just wearing an article or two of black clothing to the office will get you funny looks. Same thing goes for, like, LOLW0000THOTPINKTHONG-O-RAMA!!!!!!!!!1. The vast majority of people, excluding strippers and porn stars, can't go around in RL in most of the stuff I see for sale here. But in SL, middle-aged salary men with balding hair and love-handles can be the Blingin' Goth Queen Of The Sexballs if they want to. Why not?

From: Eboni Khan Black is the new black! Damn you for stealing what I was going to say. I honestly find the overuse of black in clothing in SL to be pretty tiresome and uncreative. I understand why it is used for hair so frequently, but there are some designers who seem to need a memo about the magic of techincolor and that the Dark Ages are over.

I wear black in SL because I wear black in RL. It has been my favorite "non-color" for the past 35 years. Why change now?

cause my skin is blue. makes finding colors that look good harder to find, black just tends to work, although i tend towards grey more often. white works too, but i like how the dark colors look better

I know there is a goth element or something that requires people to dress in all black. Is that it? Same reason I do in RL, not to punk or goth out, but because I like black and white and grays. They go with just about any color, and add a bit of contrast or dramatic effect, similar to B&W photographs.

Hate to say it, but for "guys" in SL, there isn't much of a selection in clothing. Unless you're from Gor or from other alien 'hoods. Most of what's left is in black. And you make do.

I realised on standing around with three friends the other day that we were all in white, black and grey. This isn't our constant theme, it's just that for busy days it's so much easier to shove on that combination and not worry about it. Also, and a hint to designers here, there aren't enough clothes that cover up the tum. Shirts and trousers ought to meet sometimes or no-one will take you seriously.

My Avie is white (Photoshop accident--not affectation), and black makes for an interesting contrast. When I started (I know, I am still a Noob ), my Avie was pink-skinned with purple hair. One misplaced tattoo later, I was all black and white. I suppose the 'look' just grew on me.

I don't think I wear black all that much. If anything I think I wear Blue and Lime Green more than any other. I am big on primary colors or rich earthy colors.
My favorite colors for AV clothes from most to least: ------------------------------------------------------------ Blue (My wings are a permanent part of my AV) White Green Black Orange Red All the rest

Black is the best. It's elegant. In RL I wear it more than anything else. I'm not goth, just somebody who doesn't follow the fashion herd. In SL it's strange to see so many good outfits and so much good hair in black. I haven't found my SL look yet. Love the Chi hair of course, but that's from an anime series so all it says is I love that series. Fav colors for clothes from love it to hate it: Black White Neutrals Grey A rich deep blue or burgundy A muted red like diluted with a lot of khaki primary colors the usual pastels brown yellow orange
