I was wondering this as well. Normally somebody posts the transcript very soon after they happen. Just checked Eggy's hitory wiki and it's not there yet either. *shrug*

It's OK Eggy, I'm just suprised that nobody has posted the transcript here and thought I'd check the WIKI just in case it had been put up there instead.
Did anybody go? I'm curious to know if it was just about permissions or whether Cory dealt with more information on the plan for rectifying the many problems in SL. _____________________

Was the town hall publicized? I would have gone if I had known it was even being held.

Was the town hall publicized? I would have gone if I had known it was even being held. Well I never saw an announcement in the announcements forum but I did see a post on here yesterday by Ben Linden about getting repeaters for it. That was the first I heard of it as well and it looks like not many people actually got to go, which explains the lack of transcript! _____________________

Hrrmpf. Last time I *did* a transcript because I was afraid there wouldn't be one available online shortly. This time I relied on Haney's skills of immediatly posting one transcript. I wanted to recheck it for the newest entry on my own blog. Ah well.

Moopf, basically Cory has his own blog on features and bug fixes, and Philip also talks about them, too.
The biggest changes will be the new way of dealing with the asset server, it will become a distributed system to be installed some time next week ![]() No, actually the Town Hall meeting was not just about "permissions" but more about the Linden vision on enforcing "weak copyrights" (ie. things like GPL/BSD applied to content and not software) and how this will affect Second Life. Since this will be a major change in the way we deal with SL's many objects right now, they're starting to get comments on it something like 9 months in advance ![]() Yes, the Town Hall meeting was very interesting. Things will change - a lot. _____________________

The biggest changes will be the new way of dealing with the asset server, it will become a distributed system to be installed some time next week ![]() I've already read the blogs, have seen the time scales (we're talking months here people for full solutions to stability and bugs) and seen about the asset server which they say will be available in preview next week. So that's probably 2-3 weeks away if they do the preview correctly this time. Mind you going on preview for 1.5, it may be as little as 5 minutes after preview ![]() No, actually the Town Hall meeting was not just about "permissions" but more about the Linden vision on enforcing "weak copyrights" (ie. things like GPL/BSD applied to content and not software) and how this will affect Second Life. Since this will be a major change in the way we deal with SL's many objects right now, they're starting to get comments on it something like 9 months in advance ![]() Yes, it's a new feature isn't it, a major change that will introduce more bugs, I read about that in Cory's log where he describes it as simplifying but seems to me to be a heck of a lot more complicated. So they're not talking about implementing this for 9 months?? Is that what Cory said? That's good if they're not, I'm keen for LL to stick to Philip's promise of no new features until stability and bugs are sorted. We shall see. Yes, the Town Hall meeting was very interesting. Things will change - a lot. Yes but will they be better or worse in the near-term? _____________________

So they're not talking about implementing this for 9 months?? Is that what Cory said? That's good if they're not, I'm keen for LL to stick to Philip's promise of no new features until stability and bugs are sorted. We shall see. To me it also sounds horribly complicated, and has tons of side-issues and side-effects. Neither Cory's blogs and many many comments, nor the Town Hall meeting, did clarify those "side-effects". There are so many issues at stake that I can't see the forest from having too many different trees in front of me! However, I really do compliment LL on discussing this with us so early! Yes but will they be better or worse in the near-term? That should be a new thread somewhere on the forums. I expect that after 9 months and 34,768 posts, we wouldn't have a consensus agreement on it. I feel that LL is going in the right direction, but I'm a little afraid about many residents who think that they'll get out of business if they can't guarantee a "monopoly" on their creations. I still remember the "wars" around the Animation Overrider here in the forums. The net result was that there are now several open source versions of the AO, but Archanox is not loosing money. Why? He gives excellent technical support AND sells the animations. So added value is always a good argument for repeated sales. However, I also think that recent history gave us Microsoft, a software giant based on excellent marketing, lousy customer support, and utterly bad products - just because they have a monopoly. I therefore conclude that having monopolies is GOOD for the economy, but bad for customers, of course! "Linuxizing" SL will be a very interesting development. I can't say if it's "better" or "worse". I feel that customers will benefit, but if creators won't make business, they'll give up creating fascinating stuff. _____________________

Yes but will they be better or worse in the near-term? As far as the permissions system goes, it's going to be anarchy incarnate for about 3 weeks after the switch. You thought 1.2 was bad? Oh hooooo, wait until the lindens try explaining the new permissions system to everyone. And THEN watch as everyone's scripts get copied and resold for a higher price. Observe with glee as loopholes are found mere minutes after launch! Cackle with good-natured fun as the SL economy grinds to a halt due to massive piracy! Yes, this, and many more things, can be yours in just 2 point releases away... LF _____________________

LF Heh, hyperbole is fun. ![]() I think the Lindens are aiming this permission change thing in the right direction, if they want SL to grow and expand. I also think there will be many merchants who will be madder than wet hens over this if it happens exactly the way it's currently planned. They *are* giving us a chance to comment on it, and changes won't be implemented until well into 2005, according to Cory. I'm surprised they didn't post Cory's Town Hall info to the Announcements forum as they usually do. Also, I thought Haney said there would be a transcript posted to forums of Cory's session yesterday. Unfortunately, I didn't keep a copy since I arrived about 10 minutes into Cory's talk. ![]() |

so is the answer no? there is no log posted anywhere? So far, it appears not unfortauntely, which is a shame as I'd like confirmation that they're not talking about implementing this for another 9 months as Gwyneth suggested. _____________________

Right Moopf. Actually this is based on the timeline schedule that Cory talked about. 1.6 should be released by the year's end or early 2005, and that's the one which will feature a Linux client, and highly likely the new Havok. 1.7 will feature the new permission system, and it's supposed to be scheduled for summer 2005.
More than that... people requested a more "concrete" timeline from Philip. Knowing the "openess" that LL is showing, I believe that they will provide that to us, too ![]() _____________________

More than that... people requested a more "concrete" timeline from Philip. Knowing the "openess" that LL is showing, I believe that they will provide that to us, too ![]() Oh....that's not good. So we'll have 1.6 including a Linux client and Havok by the end of the year, yet Philip says that all development time is being put into fixing bugs in what's already available and on stability, and he was talking months for that not weeks. Something doesn't add up there, either we will have no new features until the bugs are gone, or we will. Philip made the statement, it appears that's not quite being agreed on by others. I'm confused. I think the openess is all well and good as long as we have consistency - maybe there isn't enough openness, like maybe a development schedule that we can all see and that is agreed on at LL. I dunno. _____________________

Could someone post a synopsis of the new permissions?
Why will scripts be copied? Why will merchants be mad? Details? _____________________

I've been up for 28 hours on a coding binge I'm jealous. In order to optimize my own coding efficiency I limit myself to 14 hours at a time and supplement with ephedra/caffeine/aspirin stack after the first two "warmup" hours. Doh, now my secret is out. _____________________

Was the town hall publicized? I would have gone if I had known it was even being held. For whatever reason (I could venture a guess but won't) it was announced in the Feature Request forum a few days ago rather than in the Announcement Forum or something. Also, I had made a copy of the TH chat too but deleted it when Haney (I think) said the transcript would be posted soon. D'oh! LOL. -Meiyo _____________________
