I gotta admit, I do partially agree with Chris on this one *waits for the sun to fall from the sky*
America has some screwed up race problems... I don't get affirmative action based on race. If it were based on socio-economic factors, I'd be all for it because I believe poor students have a distinct disadvantage in the schooling system. Most of these students will be minorities.
Maybe it was just my town, maybe it was just a Canadian thing... but we had scholarships and busaries called 'Indian culture award' and 'Black heritage award'.. and ya know what? I won both of them. Not because of race, the awards weren't based on race, but on knowledge about Indian culture and Black heritage. The point was promoting and rewarding knowledge... and isn't that what school is supose to be about?

Events include: - Car Parts Sculptures: Create artistic works of art with all those car parts that are laying out on the front yard. At least they look artistic after a couple 6'er's of Bud.
- Wet Wife Beater Contest: Show off those sexy man-boobs!
- Mut Relay Contest: Show ya'll best friend off in this excite'n relay race. First ya freind must go an fetch a beer from the fredge, then ya'll bug gets you the remote. Then is the imitation contest, as the mut sits on the porch staying off in to space.
- Beer Bottle Shotgun Bowling: Stack up those empty bottles and roll a bullet from ya handy Smith and Wesson.
- Mobile Home 'Big Man' Contest: See how far ya'll can tug you home behind you.
- Ride'n Mover Race: See how quick you can mow your 10m2 hunk of grass on your $2500 ride'n mower.
Make sure ya'll bring your spare tires for our famous 10 gallon drum BBQ and song singing . We'll be singing such classics as "My dog died but I still got ma pickup", "My dog died and I shot my wife, but thank god I got my pickup", and "My dog ran over my wife in ma pickup". Coming soon at BUDWISER 123,201![Just in case people do not get enough sleep, this is a parody. It is not my viewpoint on the world. SL Media does not exist. Save dolphins, don't eat tuna.]

The point was promoting and rewarding knowledge... and isn't that what school is supose to be about? Exactly why affirmative action especialy in schools is a failure, because some students who have plenty of money and grades get accepted to schools over white students when they could easily get in. They get scholarships etc... Why base it on race. Base it on income. A poor family, is a poor family no matter what color it is, and since the basis of this is that most poverty stricken people are believed to be black then it will still target them higher.... agh another arguement for another day though. If it were based on socio-economic factors, I'd be all for it because I believe poor students have a distinct disadvantage in the schooling system. Most of these students will be minorities. I have to agree with you on that, Kiari. Ultimately, basing affirmative action exclusively upon race only gives bigots valid ammunition to use against ethnic minorities for a change. Though the numbers are low, percentage-wise, there are people who take advantage of the system. The question is, how to balance it properly? To say that Affirmative Action has no place at all is to ignore the point -- racism still exists. ALL evidence to support the theory that basing affirmative action upon race is harmful or reduces the quality of work is anecdotal. Until I can see some valid studies conclude that the costs of Affirmative Action outweigh the benefits, I have a hard time buying that it's altogether a bad thing. In most parts of Canada, and indeed, much of the US, race isn't as big a deal as it is in states like Alabama or Mississippi, so for many of us, the whole concept of Affirmative Action seems insane and old-fashioned. We have to remember though, there are still pretty big parts of even Canada where race is quite a big deal. In the town I grew up in, 100km from Detroit, 300km from Toronto, if you were black, getting a job would be difficult. If you were native, it would be nearly impossible. Edit: Fixed bad copy-and-paste job.

But they smell pretty bad if they chew on the electrical cords too long.

My avatar is very light-skinned. She started out much darker, but I have lightened it a great deal since then. But I had a very practical reason for my choice in shade. I'd just bought nipples and this was the only color that would match

There's only one race I recognize - and that's the 'human race'. Everything else is just diversity, and diversity is what makes everyone who are part of the human race unique and special.
Racial equality isn't about giving equal attention to each group's particular traits, but rather it is about blindness - that there is no need to point out the traits in any way shape or form. When people can learn to be blind to skin-deep traits as 'race', and concentrate on looking at each other as fellow human beings first, then perhaps then true equality will occur.

- Newfie Pendragon Bravo Newfie! Affirmative action, Black history month, Irish parades, blah blah blah... they are ALL racist because they're based on ethnicity. Whenever someone holds up their skin color or national origin or tribal affiliation as something that separates them from the rest of humanity they're reinforcing that separation, and as a result helping racism and ethnocentrism to live on another day. It's a difficult dilemma really because to many people cultural traditions and heritage are very important, but it all has a dark side.

Well none of us (to my knowledge) gets to choose their color or ethnicity. People are people regardless of their color or where they are born. The labeling of or giving of ANY privileges aimed at any one color or group only serves to segregate them from the whole as others here have mentioned.
Personally, I will be happy when the alien mice invade because maybe for once we will all band together as one race and fight for cheese!!
