ugg! *insert puking smilie that should exist as an option on these forums*

If it is not Ulrika that the rumor involves, I have too much faith in that Linden for it to be the other person implied. :p

Player X is Grimmy Moonflower.
The legend that Grimmy is my alter ego is absolutely not true.

Ahhh I know the other person you are referring to - yeah, that rumor has persisted longer than it being Ulrika.

I think the success of that "legend" came from the fact that it explained a genuine mystery. The Lindens created a mystery in the way they dealt with that person, and a story spread that provided an answer to it. A reasonable person could suspect that something weird was going on. The legend is sordid enough to be interesting but not so weird as to be completely implausible.

I can't believe there aren't more legends to share with us hermits.

"Living" in an old sim like Boardman and DeHaro can be really interesting. Sometimes some of the old, old residents are still around and it's actually really interesting (to me anyway) to hear about tensions between old residents who lived there before you, conspiracy theories etc... It's part of the history of a sim.

These are not urban legends, just kind of a backdoor way to gossip about people without naming names by those who know who you are referring to.

Honestly, what good could come of this thread? Like we don't already have enough drama and conspiracy theories on the forums that we need to create threads like these? Cris is right, this is not about legends, it's about gossiping without naming names. :(

True, I guess an urban legend would be more like the one about massive sewer rats scampering up plumbing and bitting people's bums while they're on the toilet.

Ya I was thinking the same thing as Cris on this. Most Urban Legends I have heard seem to be cautionary tales or stories with a moral or humorous/ironic twist (Have a fling with a strange girl, end up in a bathtub sans kidney!)

If there really ARE urban legends like this in SL (I haven't heard any) then this could be a fun thread. But so far it's shaping up to be another thread to dish about people.

Urban Legends tend to be stories that explain something or turn something that "should be" or that we would "like it to be", but probably isn't.

Sooo.... with that in mind I think I have one.

A long time ago, a certain man used to dominate the SL forums with his long rambling posts about an arcane economics-based philosophy that no one agreed with. He went on so much about it and was so violent and so aggressive that within a very short time this "angry man" was the most hated man on the forums.

The more folks argued with "angry man", the more aggressive he got, sending out many personal attacks, and starting many flame wars. The wise yet peacefull Linden Gods tried to silence "angry man's" attacks, but being peace loving they hoped only that he would see the error of his ways, and resisted all attempts to punish him.

Over time, the forum population got more and more fearfull of "angry man" and more and more irritated with his words.

It wasn't long even the most saintly amoung them started to loiter casually on the forums with long knives in their hands hoping to cut the "angry man's" throat before he could launch another one of his attacks. Unfortunately, although several innocent bystanders were mistakenly killed, "angry man" was hardly scratched and continued in his attacks.

"Why!?" the SL forum posters cried out, .... "Why do we have to suffer the posts of this angry angry man?"

But still the Linden Gods were loathe to act.

"Angy man" is smart, angel Jeska said "and is a human being. He will one day see the error of his ways. We must wait."

Soon a story began to be passed amoung them that shook the SL forum posters to their very core!

Even though "angry man" displayed the most classic and obvious male traits of intense aggressiveness, goal directedness, selfishness, and pigheadedness and was in every way possible the "quintessential man"...

some said that "angry man" was in fact a WOMAN! :o

Finaly! The people had a release from the aggression of "angry man." They could not defeat him, they could not even implore the Gods to take him away, but they could take solace in the fact that after all, he was only a girl!

:D

I heard one:

There is this guy in SL, who is so hideous that he can not get a date in SL. He has resorted to dating sheep instead of avatars. I don't know if there is any truth to this.
Kind of spooky, eh?

Well..... I hate to be a party pooper, but I was near-present for a version of this one.

When I was a teenager, my Dad's brother was living with us for awhile. I was in the kitchen and he was in the bathroom next to the kitchen. I hear this scream, then cursing and pounding. A few seconds later a very pissed off squirrel.. soaking wet (among other things) comes shooting out of the bathroom (the door was slightly open), hauls ass through the kitchen, and tears out of the patio door... pursued by my Uncle in his boxers.

My sympathies were with the squirrel.

Which at best guess had fallen into the stack which provides air to the plumbing.

True story.. I was .. mostly .. there

What I used to think for the first three months I was a newb:

Once you cross into a Mature area, you will be bombarded with drive-bys, street hookers, bombs, bondage etc. I would literally spaz out if I was walking in a PG sim and, thru lag, got catapulted into Mature land. Like you'd go from serenity to utter chaos with a simple border crossing.

Lindens weren't real people but AI bots. And they were the things we had to avoid or else they'd kill us or something. I got that impression when I was hit with a push script in the City Sims. :p

Furries looked the way they did becuz they were from an entirely different space/time flux, in other words, subscribed to a different type of account. It didn't help that all the furries I did meet had names like Tiger, Gorilla, etc. So I really believed that if I had named myself Panther or something, I'd log into SL as a furry. I just didn't realize at the time that we could make our av's like that.

One day in Luna, a guy did some fancy hacking in chat and made the sun rise for me. Well, he claimed he did, and I didn't know anything about the Debug menu or Force Daylight. So maybe he did do some fancy God thing. Or it was just time for the sun to rise. Anyways, I thought it was cool :o

I used to be scared of going into the water, cuz I believed there would be scary creatures at the sea bottom.

I thought all the people in the Leader board were some type of player government. So at the time, I thought Big John Jade was the president of them all, since he was on top of almost all the lists. Hehe.

Those were the legends I made up in my head anyways. I kinda miss that feeling. Nowadays all we have to conspire about is FIC and who is cybering with which Linden. Booooring. :D

I have to name names for mine. But of course it isn't true, it is just an Urban Legend.

That James Miller is Phillip Linden's alt! :D

i don't believe this one. i was introduced to philip in world by james. james was giving us both a tour of his high rise building with - ooh ahh - an elevator! we were very impressed. (it was beta). james seemed as in awe of philip as i was.

Actually I remember people cautioning me about Jessie when I started. "DON'T GO THERE THEY'LL KILL YOU!!!". For months, I made sure to stay away from that whole area, thinking I'd have to make a new account if someone in Jessie shot me dead.

Oooh! Another one:

Don't accept random tp's becuz these will just TP you to a sim where a group of people lie in wait to shoot you dead.

Before they are urban legends

Urban legends start very simply....

As lies or misinformation that is believed and carried on to the point that if enough people belive it... it must be true.

One is that saying "REZ" makes things rez faster.

I have a feeling a lot of these "urban legends" about players (particularly the negative ones) have a common origin.

yea but that's not going to stop us from making it a REAL urban legend thread! :-D

I find it awesome we are having our own sense of culture and identity here, and have SL-specific things not limited to only terminology, but memes bubbling from under. Just like "real countries" do. Some of the humor will be cultural too, and as for the urban legends, the "OHNOES MY AVATAR GOT TURNED INTO A REALLY UGLY WOMAN" aka "Being Ruthed" one is not only scary... but TREU!

The FIC is the ultimate SL urban legend, at least in the Bigfoot / Nessie vein.

The only other legend that leaps to mind is that there are other planets if you just fly high enough (millions and millions of meters). It certainly gets weird up in SL space but I've never seen another planet. :)

Urban legends seem to exist to reinforce community traditions. Maybe our lack of urban legends, the cautionary tale kind at least, points to a lack of traditions other than our tradition of avoiding traditions.

Then again, it might just be hard to have mystery in a tiny videogame world where everything you see was built by another player. We have a real behind the scenes view of our world that makes it hard for mystery to grow.

Except for the mystery of hippoes. What's up with that?
