I saw a question about this "person" posted in a thread on the hotline and checked the leader boards and sure enough this "person" exists Not only do they exist but they have made it to the top ten in less than a month. After a week the lindens have not provided a response as to how someone could exist with this name as it is not one of the avaliable last name choices.
Theories? Proofs?
(sorry...I have this immediate need to know the answer disease and the Lindens have been VERY slow to answer hotline topics lately)

hehe.. I don't know the answer. Though I figure once we *do* get the answer it will be less exciting than we expect. One thing to remember also. The Lindens do actually take time off on the weekends. Linden Lab is actually a small company. So it is not unusual or even un-justifiable that a couple of days can go by without answers. Especially when a weekend is involved.

A theory would be a holding account for L$ transactions in the new currency marketplace, given then name. That would explain it being a reserved name, and also rising onto the top 10 list. Philip indicated at the town hall that testing was very close.

I asked Robin, she said it was for a private project, not relating to SL. Or something to that degree.

From: nimrod Yaffle I asked Robin, she said it was for a private project, not relating to SL. Or something to that degree. Ah yes, the bank project is in testing as well. The naming and timing would also make sense for that. The bug explanation would also fit, as it most likely is not supposed to show up since it is not part of the public grid.

Kinda silly though: When you create a custom name for a custom project, they could just use the ATM family name and put The as first name, and not do it: TheA TM.

I suspect LL don't have to use family names at all. They probably have a single edit box for full-name or something. Why "TheA TM" instead of "The ATM"? easy I dot hat all thet ime.

TheA TM is a secret FIC account, built as part of a socialist conspiracy to remove money from the hands of unsuspecting noobies.

Illuminati, definitely Illuminati, Wheel Of Fortune. Look at the studio filled with glamorous merchandise. Fabulous and exciting bonus prizes. Thousands of dollars in cash. Over $150,000 just waiting to be won as we present our big bonanza of cash on Wheel Of Fortune. Definitely Illuminati. Uh oh, fifteen minutes to Judge Wapner.

Haha!! LOL! As far as the lindens taking the weekend off, I get that, but many posts in the hotline took several days during the week last week to get answered....perhaps the labor day weekend was extended for some? *jealous*

I asked the question mainly because of my concern that that money is printed and now in game. I have not tried to make a payment to the account to see if one can interact with this account.
Yes, it took 3 days for them to say they are clueless and after 1 week was still no reply so I asked again. I find it interesting that if this was a bug , this bug has roughly 8800USD. Putting this in perspective that Lindenlab do not seem to notice when newbies bid in auctions 10000USD for sims with stolen creditcard, ( even give the sims to them and let them be resold). I assume they do not care about if some bug suddenly would have 10000USD?

I have not tried to make a payment to the account to see if one can interact with this account. As everyone who read the Philip Linden Economy townhall transcript knows, LL is not printing money, nor do they plan on doing so in the future; only an exchange is planned. Why would they print money for sale? It would quickly collapse the economy. I'm inclinded to agree with Cristiano's assessment: Nothing more sinister than a third party project using Linden resources, most likely the bank which caused such a stir a few months back.

From: Willow Zander I was thinking it stood for TheA T(ea)M rather than The A TM. Of course! In 2005, a crack commando unit was banned from the internet for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Second Life underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire TheA TM. Obviously, the jump in L$ to their account means they're working again.

From: Robin Linden This account was created to support the Stagecoach Island project, which I discovered subsequent to answering your question initially. I honestly did not know that the account had been created for that purpose when I tried to answer your question. I discovered the answer when I pursued the bug theory.
The money used in the project is completely separate from the SL currency pool, and will not affect the Second Life economy.
Chalk up another loss for groundless suspicion and idle conjecture, I suppose.

I wuz thinkin' we need an avatar that runs around and gets punched for cash, and coins of L$ fly out, much to the delight of the vicariously vicious crowd. Like a money tree, but mo' mobile, yes?

Like a money tree, but mo' mobile, yes? Hey, that would be kind of cool. Maybe something a little less... er, violent? Like a Leprachaun that ambles around very quickly, and if you click his pot of gold, he falls over, spilling coins, and you get paid a few L$. That would be very amusing, both for the person playing the Leprauchan and for those watching his antics.

O c'mon, what about chasing after the leprechaun with scalpels, chainsaws, and deboning machines? Imagine what sort of cybernetic intrusion devices YOU could make, Enab! And the real catch is that while he may carry a pot of gold, most of the treasure is inside his stomach! Guess what we gots to do to get some of it? MUHAHAHA. I jest... but something to think about for Second Death.
