Not competition, more like 'another annoying Im system my less-savvy freinds will try to drag my onto'.

Its Will Harvey's latest attempt to sucker people into giving him money for pretty much nothing.

Afew good ideas, with some ok technology, wraped with a really stupid money-making scheme.

*shrug* Thats nothing new when it comes to Harvey i'm afraid.

Aimee has been on top of it as with all things. :D

IMVU is certainly not competition for SL in its current incarnation but it IS a virtual environment where users can be content creators. It's actually pretty cute overall.

Here is Aimee...IMVUized...

IMVU is more of a functional chat room, while Second Life more closely resembles some sort of video game.

Yes, myself and Mistress checked it out as well awhile back lol. It's cute for sure but I wouldn't compare it to SL.

Now my account won't work right!

lol asl?!

Honestly what place on the internet ISNT full of morons?

IMVU isn't in the same genre as SL, IMVU is effectively a IM-Add-On that you pay into.

It has some cool technology, but it's limited by the same close-minded ideas that stiffled There. I mean... c'mon... *buying* your own name? If that doesn't scream greed I don't know what does. :P Either decide you're a virtual world and go full on with the connectivity or stop with the overhead and just be a simple Add-On. Nothing worse than a program with a identity crisis (and no its not the same as SL and calling SL a "game" or a "world" because LL clearly states their position on the subject but users are the ones argueing about it).

The only thing I'd like to see SL have that IMVU does is custom avatar shape-skeleton structures. I.e. having an avatar mesh that looks like a cat instead of using prims.

Honestly I see IMVU as kinda pointless for the average IM user, why? It's not free, most IMers are used to free for basic features. It doesn't really add anything. It's a hassle to switch back and forth between not using it and using it. I don't see this going any further than those interested in Virtual World tech, especialy when alot of the user base for IM systems are under 18 and don't have as direct access to a credit card as needed. Even those over 18, I asked friends who don't use any Virtual Worlds if they'd use IMVU, people who constantly use IMs, and none said yes.

Sorry if this sounds a bit bitter, but it is, comes from trying to convince developers that simple features are bad ideas in beta and them seeing too much $ to understand the logic.

Oz, IMVU is free. The free features are, of course, limited. And as has been mentioned, IMVU is very commercially-oriented -- but many products are created by IMVU users. I interviewed Will Harvey a couple of weeks ago about IMVU in case anyone's interested in his thoughts on IMVU's place in the Metaverse and in relation to SL:

Ehhh, when so little is offered Free, I disqualify the word. Such as "Free 30 Day Trial" being used to lable the product as "Free". Or at the supermarket with "Free Samples" and then the actual product says its "Free". Or there were those uh Siera Mist? I think? Comercials, where the guy got arrested because he stole a bottle and it had "Free" on it and he thought it was free to take one but it actualy meant Free of carbs or something? Like that.

Very good interview with Will. The confusing thing about IMVU though, is that he says its not a virtual world, yet many of the aspects of IMVU, such as economy, come for a virtual world, little if ANY other IM Add-Ons have an economy system. I also find most of the avatar models ugly, big heads and little bodys remind me of sick etheopian(sp) children, or aliens. However the avatar technology is of course great, I believe most of the ideas come from what they did at There, so it's really just a continuation of that feature.

As for a question, if you'd be willing to ask him, since IMVU makes such use of Open Source tech, would IMVU ever go full open source? Or what parts of it would they open? Also he said they had already made contributions, where? And What?

Burke, I don't believe conferencing is possible yet. But I think they're looking into it.

IMVU Is Completely 100% Disgusting.

Why?

1. Everything in it screams SEND US YOUR MONEY NOW!!!!
2. IMVU Staff have NO respect for content creators. (10 items(Mine) that worked fine one day, then IMVU changed a little code and they all broke, and all they said to us were "Oh well talk to the content creator, its there bug."
3. $20.00 just for the right to TRY THINGS ON (and not even MOST things)
4. Windows create a huge problem, having 5 ims open at once meen 10 or more windows!
5. EXTREME Resource hog for SUCH a SMALL program.

I was going to point that out. It made me snort laughter since anyone who goes "asl" is most likely the biggest joke on the internet to anyone who has a clue. What that picture is missing is the girl going "STALKER!" and suckerpunching the guy off the raft into the water.

See, if that pic had -that- in it, I might even be inclined to try this software.

Yes, i totally agree. I have made only a guest account, but all the clothes/avatar adjusments you get to do when you create your account are all lost. I was a naked brown haired dude, with black shorts after the update. Nothing in my inv worked. That's real good customer service. :(
