I certainly want to thank Candie for starting this thread because highlighting clause 5.3 completely changes my attitude towards what I would be willing to do here. If I download personally copyrighted material whether it be prose or music, I fully expect that within the game world I am giving up any control over that material other than what the game world allows. And I would also fully expect that the Lindens than have the right to within normal business operations concerning Second Life to have free rights to use and display this copyrighted material including in public advertisement or articles concerning the nature of the world. This clause goes way beyond that if I read it correctly. This clause appears to give full publisher rights to the material.

I have no need or desire to be financially enriched by my creative work within world, or outside of it for that matter, but on the other hand I will absolutely not expose my creative work to any infringement of those rights outside of world. If this is the case than I will not download any more of my creative work. I make no judgement as to whether SL is poorer for that.

Well, that's your perogivtive Jesse. If you don't want Second Life taking your art as their property, then don't upload it. I'm not attacking you, i'm just stating a simple fact, since everyone seems to think i'm attacking everyone.

All I want to say simply is that this game is a chance to share and build our own game, the way we want it. Anything that is uploaded here should be used and enjoyed by all. Think of it as a big open source world. There shouldn't be any real problems with someone buying something from you in game, and using it in game. While Candie is right to complain because someone STOLE her textures and then redistributed it, and she had a license for those textures.

Brad, no sense of being attacked taken. I stated clearly that I have absolutely not problem with what happens in world. I would download my stuff to be used freely. But there is a significant gulf in my view between such free use in world and signing over to Linden Labs unfettered publishing and distribution rights in any Real life media with no further input from me in Real Life. In the end its no big deal, just glad this was brought to my attention early on.

I would like to make one further statment on this issue. The notion that Second Life is simply a game severely limits its potential and strips a good deal of its revolutionary nature from it. Just a point of view that in no way should infringe upon those who want it simply to be a game.

Free textures vs copy protected

If you download textures from the 'net, read the fine print on the website. Many sites have legalese in very small text somewhere on the website to read and they will make it clear that the offerings are "free" for all usage.

If you create a texture from your own talent... Great! I salute you!

PS: there are many many free sites on the 'net to gather textures from... and sounds too.
