Careful not to let your heads explode. If you set your threshold below two, the most astonishing examples of stupidity and ignorance come through.

Furthermore, as Second Life goes to the Metaverse, and this becomes an open platform, Linden Lab risks lawsuit in court and [attachment culling] will, I repeat WILL be reverse in court.

Don't you mean 3? :p I hardly ever read comments on Slashdot. It just makes me what to hit people.

The whole site makes my head want to explode - I have never understood the appeal of that crappy, cluttered eyesore of a site.

Slashdot is awesome for reading at work, it doesn't raise eyebrows like flashier sites. I <3 Slashdot, you and Chip are just some H8ters! :D

you may not like /. but it has several hundred thousand readers. Any news there about SL is a great advertisement. You just don't want your site to be slashdotted :) (ie thousands of people clicking on the link in the story)

Yes, except most readers of Slashdot are typically Linux users. For me, SL did become the #1 reason for dual-booting windows, but many might just shy away when they find out there's no Linux version.

Two? Two? You're a glutton for punishment, Enabran. I keep the filter set to five. Even then it's sometimes not enough. :D I did drop it down to 1 for this article though, and wasn't too surprised at some of the silliness.

Nevertheless, I'll take whatever advertising we can get. First boingboing, now slashdot... what next? AOL?

Yeah, WTG Linden Lab! How dare you not drop everything and focus precious development resources being used for stability and bug fixing to instead make sure that Linux users have a client. That should be priority number one, because look at the enormous amount of users who use Linux on the desktop - the whole single figure market share percentage of them!. It makes complete business sense right?? Way to go! You are teh suxxors because the Linux client is more important than anything else! Thanks cause Linux is kewl and you don't need to be fixing stuff.

Actually I like slashdot a lot, it's the user comments that tend to grate on my nerves. It's all sort of "okay okay, you have a giant linux using open source penis. I get it!" :p

Most people who read slashdot are not really linux users, there is a vocal community who will make it look as if that's the case. I know several dozen people who are regular slashdotters and none use linux although there is a great percentage of mac users.

I agree about the siliness of most comments there, but occasionally there are some very intelligent points and funny posts. You just have to learn to skim very fast else you can easily get a heartburn :)

WoooooTTT!!! Firefox in SL!!! *giggles* Okay, that was hamming it up a bit, because I read the vote when it got approved.

I am an avid Firefox user, mostly because it's a bit less likely to get browser-jacked, unlike IE. Another plus is that I can look at my local weather in the lower right hand corner or even have it pull up Winamp for me.

As for Slashdot? My eyes ached when I read it.

Rumor has it that James Linden finally got the scrollbars working (except the scroll wheel), and Callum Linden may have mouse clicks registering... but so far it only works on Windows operating systems -- the Mac team is having a bit more difficulty.

So far, the web pages only work in a 2D User Interface window, and I believe that the the limit of functionality we're aiming for in 1.7. Web pages rendered on a prim face would happen sometime after we get the 2D stuff figured out.

Andrew,

How is the embedded browser going to handle Flash and Java/Javascript?

Will it be able to take advantage of plugins already installed on the client computer, in the same fashion that we need QT installed in order to play video in SL?

This all sounds pretty jazzy. My head swims with the various possibilities.

What's interesting is that there are 174 voteR!!s on the /vote page for Linux: if we count around 2000 voters (that's a fairly recent number), that's 7-8%. Though it's true that the Linux people might be more active, and thus vote more, but their activity might be not just words, but also, cash. I'm premium and paying well over the average tier level monthly, because I love to experiment with my projects in SL, and that needs land.

I also think techies can get more addicted to the game, and pay more USD than the average windows user. But the real hit would be if SL would be one of the rare MMOG's that run on Linux, thus it would suck up many Linux people looking for a virtual place.

And, actually, the biggest problem is not that there's no native Linux client, but the fact that it's Windows emulator unfriendly (though some people got it running, but hard).

PS: And yes, I even actually PAYED 15 USD (for nothing :I to Transgaming Windows emulator because someone tipped me that that will work... well, not for me.

A) lol after actually reading your post and the votes, no point A at all.
B) Linux users more active and rich?

That bug seems to do nothing on my computer, firefox 1.0.4.
